  1. Rob this is the exact point I was going to make myself. Resolution of models has no doubt improved tremendously. However, I don't think accuracy has necessarily improved at a proportional rate- which makes the extra resolution pretty much redundant as all you end up with is a more detailed version of an inaccurate outcome. That said, not quite sure why some people are being dramatic and slating the Metoffice? I mean seriously, someone won't do their work experience at a highly regarded meteorological agency because of a potential downgrade in NWP modelling?! OK then.......

Yes...I think you are right. We can see these things out much further in advance...but what difference does that make when the day comes and it diverts. We might as well not have the predications. We also shouldn't point fingers at the Met Office either. I found Jay Wynnes forecast at 10.30pm interesting as he ended with 'dangerous conditions' or something. Quite a stark message for a British forecast...more akin to the US hyped ones!

  2. hurricanes cover a vast area and move more slowly though don't they ?..they'd be easier to track/predict.

True...this is obviously different to forecast...but I think when people are aware of how accurate hurricane predications are...it makes our forecasts look poor...but that is the nature of the system which is difficult to track and pinpoint.

If this was a snow event...people would be shouting right now with the 18Z output. I wasn't aware that masses of snow and cold temps don't kill people...like strong winds could. I'm not sure some of the arguments are valid...any type of weather can kill but people seem to be getting hysterical over some of us 'wishing for direct impact'.

  3. The issue I have...is that despite modern technology we are still no clearer on the track. In the US they seem to be able to firm up on hurricanes quite well...but here it always seems to go wrong...be it snow or even rain.

So essentially...going back to 87...we are in a no stronger position apart from the fact the media can hype. And yes I'd love to see a good storm...I don't want to see people hurt...but as an enthusiast this is a good as we get to a hurricane style system.

  4. Those sunset photos, in particular, are fab. Posted Image They have quite an immersive feeling about them that make you feel like part of the action.

Yes despite the lack of constant thunder and lightning...the fact the evening was so sunny and warm...followed by this big looming mass which went overhead made it quite special. I wish I had a proper camera for this times and a better view from the window. Before the homes opposite were built we could see over to Mow Cop which would have made for some impressive images tonight. Oh well :(

  5. A cell passed over head around 30 minutes ago. It seemed to have weakened in terms of electrical activity but still some good rumbles of thunder and the rain was just insane. I've seen storms in Texas and Florida but that rain was gushing along with a strong gust making it even more incredible. Got some footage to upload and photos later.

  6. Frustrating day. What's being referred to as the core of the "Stoke storm", actually passed just to the South for most of the city. Could see the anvil approaching from about 2.45 & was intrigued that you could still see massive towering convection still going on inside it. As it got closer there were regular rumbles & the odd lightning visible, but mot much rain. Then as soon as the centre was past, it became epic with constant thunder & lightning for about 15 minutes as it rumbled away from us. There was certainly a dramatic change in it's nature & if it had only happened 10 minutes earlier! Close to the greatest storm for about 15 years!

Was it better than Tuesday mornings storm? Sad I missed this on my day off too as like someone else I was in Chester where skies threatened but nothing. Saw the tail end of a storm heading north east though whic had dumped a lot of rain. Wonder if we will get any more?
  7. Well just watched the local Beeb forecast here and in true style it was "thundery showers overnight with the odd rumble of thunder" and for tomorrow "heavy downpours and maybe some thunder mixed in and local flash flooding" - well Beeb you can stick that forecast if all your doing is predicting flash floods - gimme some thunder and lightning and you have a deal!

Ah but did you see the 6pm news bulletin? Jay Wynne is a very conservative forecaster but Tomasz really ramped it up with 'dangerous storms' and 'record breaking minimum temperate' night.

  8. A few pics from the Staffs Moorlands...I went in the hunt of a decent snowdrift. Totals in places were small...but then where drifting occured it was at least 7ft high. Impressive job of keeping the roads clear.

Here is the more conservative total at mine...though this is the deepest we've had it...exceeding Jan particulary on the side of the garden where it was drifting. The wind has been relentless for days now and is still blowing raw.

Overall very impressive...roads are clearing now but the totals in the Peaks are epic. Managed to drive as far as the Leek to Buxton road before it warned of a closure. A few 4x4's drove past the warnings.

  9. How has Leeks and Stoke faired, I've got appointments up there tomorrow, road conditions and snow depths anyone?

Leek is fine. Drove down the A53 earlier...clear all the way. Impressive drifts in Endon. Got as far as the first pub as you approach the Peak District where the road was closed. Moorlands council have done a fine job clearing roads...even the country lanes were clear!

  10. Light oaks 800 ft asl, on outskirts of stoke,

Around 4 inch on top of this mornings

Some decent drifts as it blows in off

Fields, lane outside house is closed

With 3 ft blown across it !

Anyone help with uploading pics taken

On iPhone, can't seem to attach file.

    Dave

I'm on Norton Heights...not that far as the crow flies...the altitude must be really helping you. We have some mini drifts...must be about 6 inches level on grass and drifts are way higher against the fences. The problem now is the snizzle falling. Its still so gusty as well. One of the showroom flag poles has lost its flag which is unusual.

  11. Around 10-15cm here on outskirts of stoke on Trent, 800ft asl and lots blowing off fields, drifts

    Already up to 2ft.

At work now in centre only around 5cm and

    Getting a bit slushy

Where are you based on outskirts? Here we have around 5cm...it is quite wet stuff. I did expect more than this really. The wind is the issue mind.
