  1. Yes Coast. I remember that well. My youngest son was 3 years old and I can remember having to try and explain to him that no, we hadn't moved to the sea side overnight! That was a truly weird experience seeing that boat on the High Street. Near my end of Uckfield which is near the river by the old Hempstead Mill House, the level of the river rose some 20+ feet and flowed over the road. That was truly scary!

  2. Hope every one is having a better Christmas Eve than last night!Decided the only way to get through all I have to do today with only 2 hours sleep is to resort to alcohol!

Just got some peppermint bark to make and I am done until our Christmas Eve buffet! Time to put my feet up with a glass of chilled white I think.

Can't believe we are still having showers- some heavy ! It's a bit gusty here at the moment and the temperature is 8.1,

Have a great Christmas Eve everybody.

  3. Morning everyone.

Hope you all managed to get through the night relatively unscathed. That was a horrible experience - don't want to repeat that in a hurry, so hope that the next bout on Friday is not as bad. We lost power for a couple of hours but it came back on around 5.30.

There are numerous roads closed in our area due to flooding and/or fallen trees. Have just spoken to my parents in East a Grinstead and they seem to have been suffered quite badly with road closures. Have heard that the A22 is closed both ways due to fallen trees, so if you are heading in that direction, you may have delays.

Our town flood defences held thankfully, although some homes have flooded gardens and the fields near me are like a lake.

The wind has died down, but it is still raining. I suspect that the extend of the damage will become more evident as it gets lighter.

Take care if you have to travel today.

  4. Things still bad here. Just seen on my local news that homeowners in low lying parts of the town are out trying to protect their homes from the rising levels in the river Uck. Gardens already flooded and the local nature reserve is under 2 feet of water. That was at 2.45am and it's still raining! With the run off from the fields further upstream still to filter through, the bottom of the town could be flooded by the morning.

This is really horrible now. I am hoping that it will start to calm down soon.

The gusts of wind are horrendous.

  5. Still awake here. If anything, the wind seems to have picked up again in the last half hour. The roaring sound is exactly like I remember from 87.

Youngest son and I sleeping downstairs as our rooms at back of house nearest the trees. We are joined by 3 very frightened cats who are not leaving our sides.

I hate to think what it is going to be like outside when daylight comes. Just keeping my fingers crossed that the house makes it through the night.

    Keep safe everyone.

  6. It's been really howling here for the last few hours. The gusts are rattling the house and sound horrible. My son got in from work and said that emergency response vehicles were out in force. I think there was a minor land slide on the road to Halland. Just spoken to my parents who live in East a Grinstead and loads of roads are shut due to fallen trees. They have been without power iron the last half hour. Dad said at their age (83) it was a bit late to be having candlelit dinners!

What is really worrying me is we haven't seen the worst of it yet.

I am praying that the large fir trees at the back of the garden don't come down on the house.

    Stay safe everyone.

  7. Good morning. It's grey and breezy here at the moment and the pressure reading is 1016.1 and the temperature is 9.2 according to my weather station. It's quite eerie as to look out there you would not realise how horrible it is going to be.

My food shop is due to be delivered after lunch - hope it makes it, or it will be ham sandwiches for Christmas lunch.

Hope everyone that has to go out today takes care, and that we all come through this storm in one piece. Stay safe all.

  8. Would like to say "Good" morning all, but not sure that there is anything good about it at all!

Have had heavy, squally showers here since early this morning, and the river Uck near where I live has already flooded the fields. It's strange to look between the houses opposite me and see seagulls swimming in the fields! So with the dreadful forecast for the next 48+ hours! it is not looking too good.

I am not holding out hope for outside decorations staying up with the strength of the winds forecast. Last night one gust knocked over the small christmas tree that I had by the front door so that is now inside.

If you are out on the roads over the next few days, take care.

  9. Good morning everyone. I am glad someone else has noticed the birds singing Coast! I came down this morning and thought I was hearing things! Nature seems to be confused at the moment.

It's quite balmy here 8.1 at the moment and felt mild when I let the dog out first thing. Is still too dark to see what is going on out there at the moment, but does not look foggy like yesterday.

Off to do some crimble shopping today, suspect I will need a large drink by the end of the day!

  10. Hi all,

Grey, grey, grey here in my part of Sussex today! We too had a spot of the "mizzle" during the morning. Decided to go mad and put on all the Christmas lights at once to brighten things up.

Think I have given myself photosensitive epilepsy now as they are all blinking in sequence! Still, at least it's a different colour to grey!

Have forgotten what the sun looks like this week.
