  1. My local loch (Lochgelly) used to be famous for medicinal leeches. Why not try ordinary household salt? it works wonders with snails which are not unlike the leech. Blitzen.
  2. I'm afraid Danny boy's forecasts leave me totally exhausted and gasping for air! must he speak so fast? The first time I saw him on tv he did (and still does) remind me of Norman Wisdom. With those teeth, he also looks like an escapee from the mad hatters tea-party! No, not my favourite i'm afraid so I think i'll stick with Mr. Gibbs. Blitzen.
  3. 1 for me because we have been told that it has all happened before with the evidence there for all to see. We are an untidy/lazy lot however, and no harm would come of clearing up the messes we leave behind ourselves. Blitzen.
  4. Pinched or not Mondy, it makes sense to me! I have never been able to understand why, the fact that it has all happened before, that some people appear to disregard such evidence which is there for all to see in the ice core samples and, more recently, the coral samples. I sometimes think that all the technology available to us nowadays amounts to no more than a stick with which to break our own backs! and keep highly paid 'Ologists' in highly paid jobs! using very expensive equipment which was unavailable during the last climate change. How therefore, do we know exactly what, where, how and when this developed with any degree of certainty? I do honestly think that the whole climate issue is a repetitive natural occurrence and will probably be shot down in flames for it Blitzen.
  5. Evening Mondy. Yes we have had light snow here for about an hour now which has just started to turn heavier. I am however willing to sacrifice the dumping that southern parts will receive overnight if only to read their excited posts! You can't really deny them it can you? However, I will be most miffed if Saturday doesn't come up trumps for us. Looking good so far though and let's hope the next few outputs back this up. Blitzen.
  6. Ah, now that explains it! I had visions of joe public panicking because John Hammond had said on Landward that this next weekend was going to be similar to 1947! Thanks for that. Blitzen. Yes, it was John , and quite an interesting article too! Blitzen.
  7. Is the Meto trying to prepare us for something? John Hammond presented a very detailed forecast predicting snow from Wednesday for Scotland and used the phrase shades of '47 at the end. The rest of the programme followed on with an article about the winter of 1947. Why I wonder, what are we supposed to take from that? Blitzen.
  8. All bulbs in our house are energy efficient - for two reasons! (1) Our local Council distributes them for free. (2) Are you kidding? with the cost of power nowadays I certainly would not be one for burning anything that costs me more than it already does! Probably selfish reasons - but no more selfish than the Power Companies with their extortionate profits! having said that, every little helps and I suppose I do my bit as much as I can with recycling etc. Blitzen.
  9. Hello Richard, my foot is still hovering over both camps I'm afraid. I don't think that past records can be ignored as in 'it's all happened before and the evidence is there for all to see' = natural climate change. I think the most I will concede at the moment is that Anthropogenic Global Warming may be having an accelerated effect. I should really study this subject more which would enable me to contribute a more informed opinion! Regards, Blitzen.
  10. Hello John/Rollo, I think we may have a better idea once the rest of this winter unfolds. It does look like the seasons have shifted backwards by about three to four weeks doesn't it!
  11. Kellyf.jpg - very clever. All wonderful entries so difficult to choose.
  12. What an enjoyable read John! I certainly don't think that people in general would cope nowadays with those conditions at all well. Having experienced a winter like that must have made you compare each subsequent winter against those of '63 and as we know none have! I look forward to your 1947 story if and when you can find the time. Regards, Blitzen.
  13. What a wonderful post Kevin! I especially like the Coate Water picture you could feel the cold just looking at it. Thanks.
  14. Hello Carinthian, and a Happy New Year to you! Things are looking and sounding a bit better now. It may well be worth the wait yet! Regards, Blitzen.
  15. Is this unusual? According to Ceefax page 416 there has been snowfall in India over the last few days which is attracting 100s of visitors and tourists! Day after Tomorrow? Blitzen.
  16. I planted double headed snowdrops in November this year and was advised that it should have been done in early Autumn. They are now about 4ins high! I cut back my chrysanthemums middle of November and they have all started to leaf and flower again. Really weird for this area! The bracts on my rhodedendrons are very well developed and i'm concerned that if we get any serious cold they will probably suffer quite badly. Blitzen.
  17. Hello Verglas, we used to have an open fireplace but had that removed a few years back. A lot of people , I suspect, would be in the same boat now with regard to heating during a very cold spell - pretty much everyone is gas-fired but if power went down then no heating! There will probably be people out there who could resort to private generators. It just shows you how 'soft' we have become over the years due to our materialistic values. I have memories of ice on the inside of the bedroom windows, having to rub a hole so that you could see out in the morning. Walking with my mother to the outside shared wash house where she would have to light a coal boiler to heat the water before she could wash the clothes. We always coped though because that was the norm. Nowadays, if the heating or washing machine etc breaks down it's a full blown panic! I would love to have those days back again when pretty much everyone was equal and happy with their lot but, unless there is a catastrophic event, that is unlikely to happen. Then again, being so young, it was the adults that had to worry about things on your behalf which probably makes the past a lot more inviting. In the event of a very cold winter in the future, I don't think we would cope all that well actually. Oh we would be ok for a few days, but a lengthly spell would probably result in utter chaos. Blitzen.
  18. Toilet paper too I would imagine! Blitzen.
  19. []Living up here in Fife I didn't experience the 1987 storm but have managed to dig out this article which may interest people in the south. Sorry about the quality, I hope you can enlarge enough to read it! Blitzen.[attach ment=25426:attachment]
