Do you use a white stick yet?
Not yet. I'm sure it's only a matter of time though!
(And all because I wouldn't spend 2 quid on a pair of eclipse sunglasses!)

Evening all
I remember that eclipse, I booked the day off work, and was at my folks place as I knew my father had a welders mask, used that to view the event, strange day, the sun went quiet, so did the birds, the temp fell and the world seemed to fall into an odd silence at the time.
I remember the fall in the temperature very well. That, and the change in the light. Can't remember what I used to view it. But I've a feeling I wore sunglasses, and held some negatives over the lenses!!

Evening folks.
Been a fairly nondescript type day here (weatherwise) too. So nowt to report on that score really!
Nice clearance in the north and north-west sky at the moment. Hope it moves in and stays this evening, as we have two more ISS passes tonight, and another display of the Perseids. Not sure my still sore neck will allow me to look up for almost an hour again tonight though!
I'm sure that some years back we had a solar eclipse (or something similar?) almost exactly this time in August during the day? I seem to remember people at work stopping what they were doing to pay attention to it.
Yep, I remember it well. It was at 11am on 11th August 1999. I was working in the Docklands at the time, and it had been cloudy all morning. Then, just before 11, a break in the clouds moved in.....as we were heading outside. And the clearance stayed for the duration of the eclipse. Amazingly!

Is anyone else watching SLOOH? I cant see much, can you?
I haven't seen anything either. But is it cloudy there? That webcam seems to suggest it is.

Have seen about a dozen. (A couple, in particular, were very bright.) Neck in agony now though! So will watch that webcam from the Canaries for a bit instead, and then hit the sack.
Night all. And happy meteorite hunting!

So, the amazing ISS seen. Just enough time now to put the rubbish & recycling out for tomorrow, make a cup of tea, and take it into the back garden for what will hopefully be this evening's second incredible display of light in the sky.
Thank goodness for clear skies!
Was just thinking to myself, I wonder what the meteor shower looks like from the ISS??? No street lights up there! But, equally, wouldn't there be light on the horizon from the rising sun in the east to cancel that benefit out?
*Just thinking aloud really.*

Here are the six people who are currently over 260 miles above us, travelling at more than 17,000mph!

Seems incredible watching that circling the planet at over 17,000 mph.....or am I reading that wrong ?
To think.....half an hour or so ago, that thing was over this country....now it's over Australia. Gob-smacking really.

Anyone know what time things are due to kick off tonight? And what direction to look in?
There isn't a set time but direction wise approximately North East I believe Matt. After 11pm is a good time to start looking though
Yep, they say have as much of the north-eastern sky visible as possible. And around midnight onwards is when you're likely to see the most meteors.

If anyone is interested, the mobile app is saying the ISS will be passing overhead again in 77 minutes. So at 11pm.

anyone know if the interntional space station should be in view at the moemt as a very bright object is moving down towards the horizon
Yep, just checked the Satellite AR app on my mobile, and it is indeed the ISS. Just gone right over me.

Was coming on here 20 minutes ago, about to say "worryingly cloudy here at the moment." But I got distracted. So I've just been outside again, and the cloud has started breaking up nicely in those 20 minutes. Is Mother Nature going to play ball for once? Certainly hoping so...

Hopefully the clouds we have here now will have cleared off by tonight, I will certainly be out there trying to see something
You have a good Monday too Lee - I'm struggling a bit here as it's normally my day off but I'm working ..the flip side is after today I've got 10 days off
Well, the forecast reckons we should see "long clear periods" across our region tonight. Let's hope this is one of the MetO's most accurate forecasts of the month!
Enjoy your 10 days off. (Though I'm sure you don't need to be told to do that! I certainly never do!)

Morning folks,
Been getting progressively brighter here as the morning has progressed. Cloud cover has gone from grey to white over the last 3 hours. And now we have blue to the NW. Another pleasant enough summer's day on offer I hope. Currently slap bang on 18°, with a gentle breeze from the WNW. So nothing earth-shatteringly exciting, but nothing to complain about either.
Tonight is supposed to another good night for the meteors, so all we can do is hope for clearer skies than Mrs M. Nature decided we were entitled to last night!
Have a good Monday, all. (Well, as good as a Monday can be!)

Luckily there was a clearance in the cloud cover right in the north-eastern sky when I went outside about 20 minutes ago. The clear area is rapidly filling in now though. Typical!
Managed to see three shooting stars though. So that's better than nothing. But I now have a very sore neck of course!
Let's hope for clearer skies all over, tomorrow night.

Same here, it peaks tonight so hopefully we will get to see something !
Forecast is looking good. Satellite shows a fair bit of cloud further west, but if it's just remnants of today's convection, my hope is it'll melt away before it hits our region.
Thanks for the link to that article earlier. Was very interesting. And had it not been for that, I'd never have known after midnight is the best time to look for these meteors - and the reason why.

Turned into a much brighter afternoon than I was expecting earlier. Really did come over dark for a few minutes at lunchtime, and about four drops of rain fell. My next door neighbour rushed out to get her washing in........and within 2 minutes of that, the sun was shining down again! And stayed that way all afternoon. Max temp was 24°.
Currently, not a cloud to be seen. And keeping everything crossed it stays that way for the meteor shower tonight...

Morning all,
Currently 19.9°, mixture of sunshine and some fairly threatening-looking clouds. Humidity level perfectly bearable. Missed out on the overnight / early morning rain some have reported.
Really hoping tonight will be clear so that the meteor shower will be visible.
Yesterday's trip to Calais failed. My mate and I cheerfully turned up at the port, passports in hand, expecting to pay the usual £12-15 fare for a foot passenger. But, no, not yesterday. The P&O foot passenger fare yesterday was............£97!!! Needless to say, we told 'em to poke it. (The bloke in front us in the queue paid £189 for just him and his car!)
So, anyway, we stayed in Dover for the day. And found a very nice pub to settle in. (With the tastiest fish and chips I've had in yonks!) The best thing about this pub is the fact it's where all the Channel swimmers go once they're back on English soil. And they all write their names/dates/times etc on the walls/ceilings. Was great to be surrounded by stuff like this:
Have a good Sunday, folks.

I find a good sprinkle with salt normally does the trick - they won't come back in a hurry then
Thanks. Will give it a try, as my neighbour is always recommending that method too.
You wouldn't even know it rained here this morning! The strong sunshine has dried everything up, even though it was pretty heavy first thing this morning
Same here. No evidence of any earlier rain here by the time we got to mid-morning. (Apart from the slugs!)
-
Morning Lee,
Was just going to say it's good for the garden, but you need to chase those pesky slugs off out of it first!
It doesn't take much for them to turn up uninvited into people's gardens, does it?! One drop of rain and the rotten things appear out of nowhere!

Morning folks,
I'm another one to join the "woken up by rain this morning" club. Nothing spectacular, but it gave the ground a soaking. (And, needless to say, it has brought the slugs out. Food for the slow-worm family that lives in my compostabin maybe?!)
Currently a slightly-cooler-than-we've-become-accustomed-to 16.7°, and some pretty leaden skies. Just starting to try and brighten as I'm typing this though.
Have a good Friday, all.

I have no issue with "choppy" seas either, some of my family do though (bless them)
With thunderstorms, it's easy for me to forget there are those who hate them. With rough sea crossings, it's far less easy to forget not everybody likes it; the ill-looking faces and dodgy stomachs see to that!

Another lovely summer's day really. Sunshine and fair weather cumulus, low humidity, and just the gentlest breeze. Top temperature was 24.3°.
Watching Saturday carefully as a mate and I are going over to Calais on the ferry for the day. What would be ideal for me would be a force 7 gale for each crossing (yep, I love being on the sea when it's choppy!), with a sunny, quiet interlude whilst we're over there, tasting the beers to make sure they're OK. I think I'm going to get the "quiet" bit. But maybe, just maybe, not the gales for the crossing!
-
Morning all.
Gloriously sunny start here too. Could just make out a few clouds in the far south-eastern sky earlier (radar has even been picking up a few returns over the extreme east of the county). Other than those, though, not a cloud to be seen so far. Barely a breath of wind either. Currently 16.4°. So, all in all, very pleasant indeed.
What a difference compared to recent summers!

Funnily enough, in the last few minutes my Accuweather add-on has changed to "a couple of thunderstorms" for Friday. Literally just as I was reading what you'd written!
