  1. I was right under the storm in Ripon earlier this afternoon, and that was bad enough. Standing on the 4th tee at Ripon City Golf Club is probably the highest point of the course and it crept up pretty quickly and viciously. I'll be honest and admit that not only had I never witnessed as overhead a storm as that, I was also more than a bit scared. Then once it passed, for about an hour it was even hotter that it had been earlier.
  2. Almost constant thunder for about an hour when I was "sheltering" on the golf course just on the east of York. Retreated to the driving range and saw some odd lightning in the slate grey skies, like a camera going off but no fork. Next batch moving in, it's black as night and thunder getting louder
  3. That storm in the Market Weighton area is following the 1079 towards Beverley so you might see something. Loads of ominous looking stuff from my back garden in East York looking S to SW but nowt showing on the radar yetEdit: not loads, and probably not even ominous now I've taken my sunnies off. Doh!
  4. Deep thunder away to the S&SE of York, quite a way off but more frequent and plenty of lightning. Seems like they're all merging, could get a bit naughty in a minute
  5. That cell that's fired up NNW of Derby has a very York-like track to it, possibly just sliding west (bad for me as I'm on eastern side) Apart from 1 big flash at lunchtime and a couple of deep rumbles we've had nowt. And that's most un-York-like. Played golf tonight and it went from hot and sunny, to breezy, to overcast, to still, to sticky and back to clear again. It's very very muggy out there and raining again. Feels very charged at the moment. Loving these mad few days of UK and near-continent tracking though
  6. Real intense shower passed over us on the golf course (north east York) about 7-45, very gusty and very wet. Lasted about 15 minutes and as soon as the rain stopped the thunder and lightning started. Counted 3 flashes and maybe half a dozen rumbles, heading Malton/Scarborough way.
  7. Whilst it "felt" a bit stormy yesterday evening before THAT storm hit York, this evening was infinitely different. So muggy on the golf course I almost felt like I couldn't breathe and my clothes were stuck to me. Some pretty nasty looking dark grey matter passed to the W or NW and I did wonder if I saw a funnel but at the time my birdie putt was more important (in hindsight......). Anyway, looking at the radar it appears that the band of potential storms are straightening and heading a bit north, ie missing areas as East as York and staying Leeds, Harrogate, Wetherby line. Am I right?
  8. York press already has a headline up. Still frequent lightning and loud ish thunder to the south or west but the rain is away NE. Gotta say if I'd decided to go to the pub at 9 after golf I'd have missed it all (pub shuts at 12).
  9. This is one of the nastiest storms I've ever seen, I'm on the east side of York and still shaking from the explosion which I think hit a house just round the corner. Never ever seen rain like this. Lightning every 5-10 seconds, constant thunder and the missus is fast asleep.
  10. Huge pink flash just lit up my living room in York, followed by another less bright one. Didn't think it was quite with us yet
  11. You've got a cell to your west that literally formed over Ripon. Thunder here in east York for a good 40 mins now, getting closer and darker, cell growing from the SW, must have just missed Headingley earlier. Next door neighbour still pegging the washing out though. Eerily calm though, wind hasn't got up yet Whereabouts are you, somewhere round Stockton or Warthill? I'm playing golf at Forest Park later!!!!!!!
  12. Not much in the way of lightning but almost constant, crackling, aggressive sounding thunder here in east York. One cell from the SE popped up no more that 10 miles from here and merged into one moving slightly NW to the east of here. Would be interesting to be either 10 miles east or 10 miles north of my location, but I'm too hungover and lazy to chase. Should have been playing golf today too, that would have put me right in the middle of it.
  13. Pretty aggressive thunder here, crashing and booming, but no lightning seen yet. That said I haven't moved from the sofa - too much happening in the golf
  14. Thunder heard in York, could be coming from the SW but there's also some menace in the clouds to the E
  15. Two or three loud rumbles and a bit of lightning from a torrential shower just passing through/round York. Skies look angry out the the South and more distantly the SW.
  16. How bizarre, not a sight or sound in York, must be literally half a dozen miles away. Whereabouts in VoY are you mate?
  17. Thunderstorm at Thirsk from what they said on racing UK. Some real cracks coming over on the coverage. Here in York it's gloomy but nothing like 23 miles up the road. I was meant to be going too Edit - pictures have now been lost
  18. Yep, saw 3 or 4 strikes and probs about 30 rumbles. Some moderate rain passed through and sunny now.
  19. Storm approaching the east of York. Frequent thunder but no lightning as yet. I've just lit barby too
  20. The one approaching York has been visible for abotu 2 hours now, barely moving at all although plenty of CC lightning and the odd CG. May either miss York to the W or looking at the size of it, move straight over me. It's a painful build up though, little or no wind at all either now.
  21. Lightning spotted to south/south west of York. closing in big time now.
  22. From above York Station i can see dark skies approaching from the S and SW, albeit very very slowly. ATM it just looks a bit darker, but as it's approaching I'm fancying it'll contain some sort of action. 30mins til it hits us though I reckon.
  23. I'm just praying that it stays clear for long enough for the mighty Darlo to take 3pts of Bratfud tonight. Looking at the forecast, I'm not sure I'll get home though
  24. Very nasty storm passed through York from about 4:20 til 5:00. Gone quiet now but there were at least 2 seperate storms in there, maybe 3. Huge CG's and massive booming thunder. I've never seen anything like it before, flash flooding too. Likely to be plenty of damage. Seems to have vanished completely now, very localised i think
  25. Really nasty storm passed over York between 1-15 and 1-45, got caught in it and now have to spend the afternoon at work with my clothes stuck to me. Plenty of thunder, didn't see that much lightning but was sheltering a bit, torrential rain, like I haven't seen for a long time, with bullet hard hail. Plenty of flash flooding around too.
