Autumn seems to have arrived a tad early this morning. Chilly wind and a sweater needed.

Some snow on the Three Peaks across the valley this morning.

Looking back the GFS 12z of 25 January was the first to show this amplification, but for 5th February, not the 6th. Just one day different. No one thought it credible, and it still may not be.
but the odds have changed substantially.

Unusually the early morning snow left us at modest elevation with more of a covering than there was on the upper slopes of Ingleborough across the valley. 4th day with snow falling this winter, 14th with lying snow.

Light snow falling since 8.00 am. Slight covering. Notably more across the valley to the north.

Here on Burn Moor we missed the heavy snow across the valley from Ingleborough northwards and got heavy rain. So it was a surprise this morning to find the ground dry and frozen. With the wind chill it felt colder than last week's minus 11. Dusting of snow now but turning to freezing rain. Snowman still alive but has lost his head.

Thought that was Bill Murray for a second there.
Me, or the snowman, or the wife's cousin, or the cockapoo?

Surprise snowfall. Nearly an inch now. Dogs loved it.

Alternating hail and snow. Back to a light covering. A bit bracing doing the outdoor jobs.

Just realised that this is also the third month running with a one day light covering of snow event. Next stop February?

you tell us? Above is a link to all charts back to the 1800s. I don’ think it’s that unusual for September to be honest. The PV usually takes until end of Oct or early November to get going. I remember many year us coldies getting excited in Autumn by all the blocking and lack of PV but by November it appears and it’s business as usual lol
Thanks. I was thinking of the lack of cyclonic activity in the NH rather than the PV. Sampling history randomly it looks a bit unusual.

So much rain and more to come, and then strong winds. Already more water in the beck than in the last named storm and yellow warning. Surprised that there was no warning.

Who said anything about spring? 2 nights of slight frost. 1 degree yesterday at 11.30 am. Horses demand hay and say the grass is not growing. Winter still.

These Irish Sea showers have a cool tendency to expand overhead as they meet the land, so your eyes are your best friend in this setup
And as we write the radar proves correct and it stops on time. You could not make it up.

Are you using the predictive radar? It doesn’t take into account convection/new showers. Just the existing ones that it has picked up on. Useless feature unless it has some sort of model input, which the NW one doesn’t.
I was just looking and do not use it as such. I prefer my eyes and the view from the window.

Just as a matter of interest there were blue clouds over the Forest of Bowland yesterday afternoon. Quite striking. Not seen this often
