In the UK only 2 of the last 8 years failed to record 35C with 37C+ recorded in 2019, 2020 and 2022. In the past few years in Scotland we’ve seen: 31.9 in Bishopton (2018), 31.6 in Edinburgh (2019), 30.8 in Prestwick (2020), 29.6 in Kirkcudbrightshire (2021) and 34.8 in Charterhall (2022). There’s definitely been a step change in the past 5 years with higher temperatures more easily achieved. Obviously a warmer atmosphere the main factor though drier soils possibly a factor aswell.

That forecast for Dumfries is remarkable (especially before mid June) but not that surprising. I suspect the nearest stations to Dumfries in Eskdalemuir and Dundrennan won’t record 32C though Carlisle might.

Considering this summer has started drier than last year I think we could see temperature close to or exceeding the old Scottish record if we get a plume sometime between late June and mid August. The recent rainfall in southern Europe could mean the air might not be as hot as last year though the models are still showing some very high uppers across parts of Europe/N Africa (which has been a feature of recent years).

We could do with some more rainfall to the limit the risk of water scarcity and wild fires. Yesterday’s rain was welcome but ultimately too scattered and short lived to have an effect.

Brilliant post, providing far more data than I could.

You can now add yesterday’s 29.7c from Ayrshire for 2023 and as you say we’re not even at mid June.

I’ll not go off on a tangent but yes, the lack of official weather stations is very frustrating. Dundrennan is coastal (and 20 miles away to the SW) and Eskdalemuir is 200m asl and about 20+ miles ENE. Neither will reach 30c tomorrow but it’s likely where I live will. I’m sure this picture is reflected all across Scotland but hey ho.

Fully agree re rainfall. It’s good some has arrived but far too little. I’ve never seen the ground so burnt looking (which will only be aiding the heat achieved during the day).

A little bit of rain here for the first time in 2 weeks today but not exactly torrential downpours so much as a couple of short showers. Looks like being back to hot and sunny for the rest of the week and possibly into the following week, wouldn't be surprised if there are water shortages if this continues into July.

Agreed, we’ll be in deep trouble if a proper breakdown doesn’t arrive before the end of June. I wonder if Scotland was as severely affected as England was during 1976, 1995 etc. We’ve surely made a strong start on the lack of rainfall front.

I forgot the BBC no longer use the Met Office for their forecasts and got a shock on countryfile when they used down here as one of the 4 locations for the 5 day forecast. Their prediction for tomorrow will surely be too high but quite shocking to see all the same. Would pretty much tie with last year which was a record (see photo - 32c).

Even if we ‘only’ get 30c, it does seem so easy now to get around 30c. I feel like only 10/20 years ago we had to build to push much above 25c… a worry

The one upside to being near the east coast when everywhere else is sweltering is being able to sleep! Got down to a lovely 10c at one point.  Currently only 15c but feels nice enough in the sun.

The lack of sleep (as a shift worker) heatwaves can bring is/was always what I dread(ed) the most.

Caved this winter and went halfers with the gf on an A/C unit. What a difference.

I remember last year getting in from nightshift and my room was at 25.7c (south-facing and i’m in a new build flat).

It’s roasting out there now, met office forecast 25c but we’re currently at 27.3c and high dewpoint.
Met office are forecasting 29c tomorrow so should unofficially break 30c…

Toastie! It's warm here but with a slight breeze. Need to get a weather station... But I would estimate mid 20's at least, it was 20c by 10am!

Some Acas beginning to move in now showing some instability. Great post about the storms @Kirkcaldy WeatherWeather.  Noticed there is a heavy shower forming down near @SW Saltire already!

I’m just coming back from Carlisle so can’t see this shower yet. I think it may miss to my West.

Hottest day of the year by miles today. Was at Cumberland show, car reading 30c currently.

Back home over the border it’s currently 29.2c. Bring on the thunderstorms!

  5. Lovely day visiting my nana at Southerness last night, a very quiet beach walk. Warmest of the year so far, max 24.6c.

Today, climbed a wee hill which has good views over the solway. Gained prominence in the 18th century as a vantage point where government guards watched for smugglers from the Isle of Man. Max 23.8c

An 18 day drought here from May 12th-29th but then drizzle from North Sea cloud gave two days each recording 0.2 mm.

With regard to the old Met' Office definition of a dry spell ( 15 consecutive days or more none of which records more than 0.9 mm of rain ) it's 22 days and counting.

A partial drought is  at least 29 consecutive days with an average rainfall over the period of less than 0.2 mm per day. It would have to stay dry until June 9th for that to be achieved and if that happens it would be the first one here since 2020 when a partial drought lasted from March 16th-April 27th ( 43 days ). I've recorded only 11 partial droughts here since 1977 and that in 2020 was the longest on record.

Very useful definitions. Here we got 1.8mm on the 20th of May so not a dry spell but last rain before that was the 8th.
We’ll be in a partial drought by Tuesday.

Now your not making any sense, whats that got to do with low river levels and moorland fires? Don't mind friendly banter but when your talking nonsense i will end this here. OK.

You’re wasting your time with these folk who clearly want the UK to have a Spanish climate and/or speak only from a SE perspective.

Everyone I speak to locally is going on about how dry it is and that we need rain.

The grass isn’t growing well due to lack of moisture. Farming is a massive employer, we need good harvests of crops.

On this matter, just take a cursory glance at the rainfall statistics from the closest weather stations eg Fort William and Tulloch Bridge. You’ll find there has been far from a shortage of water falling this year… A few dry weeks do not a drought make.

A wider look at the BBC’s untruths are for a different place lol.

A partial drought is defined as 29 days with less than an average of 0.2mm per day. Some areas will be there already, i’ll be there from Tuesday.
Reservoir levels aren’t the only factor when we talk about dry weather but yes of course that is a massive factor and thankfully it’s early in the summer.

The heat can stay or even build (Not had one day below 20c in the last week, average for June is only 17c) but some showers are also needed.

  8. Went to Campsie show today, cracking neck of the woods near Lenzie/Kirkintilloch. Reliably informed all the main drug dealers live there and can see why.

Fantastic weather, already feeling warm. On Wunderground some sites near Glasgow are already showing 22c. Back home should get to 23/24c and a nice evening for a BBQ 😎

Yes, despite seeing several references to the cloud being thinner today, it has taken longer to dissipate.  However, well on the way now, and temp responding nicely.  Must make a visit to the Riviera (Kippford?) ourselves this week.

That is indeed the riviera (I do love the jubilee walk) however no, that photo is from Powfoot. Quite often walk the dog on the beach and then get dinner at the hotel (Depends how recently payday was!).

Mainly sunny now but that wind is quite keen. We briefly reached 21c but have fallen back, hopefully warmer tomorrow.

  10. Visited the beach last nice, was a cracking night and had it pretty much all to ourselves. Excellent visibility over to the lake district.

As others have said, a very cloudy start. The sun started breaking through about 30 minutes ago and the temp has shot up from 15c to just shy of 17c. To be the coolest day of the week

  11. Wasn’t in yesterday but probably warmest of the year. 23c is what the car was saying.

Cloudier start as previous posts have covered however that strong sun has broken through. Currently 17.6c, should reach 24c today…

Will look back on May 2023 as a dark horse. Slagged off on the MOD thread (SE bias) and not so good in the East however over here despite no real heat it’s been deceptively good.

Just 25.4mm of rain (31% of average) and lots of sunshine.
The average max according to the met office is 15c for May here. We’ll have smashed that, I no longer keep records but would anticipate an anomaly of  +2/2.5c. Nights far closer to average though, consistently chilly.

June is going to start off in the same vein. It can stay warm but we really could do with some rain…

  12. Today was previously forecast to be poor (15c and cloudy) but it’s been clear blue skies. Another met office failure

Was up in Kilmarnock today and it was very pleasant.
Back home, much the same. Maybe a shade warmer, a max of 19.4c. No wind and the strong sunshine is making it feel warmer than that.

I start 3 weeks of annual leave from Wednesday and looks like i’ve timed it pretty well 😎

  13. Went to Drymen show today, really nice agricultural show and it was busy. Cracking views over to Loch Lomond and associated hills/munros.

Dry although I turned up in shorts and a t-shirt so needed to re-assess!
Cloudy and breezy up there with a max of about 15c.

Back in the tropical South it’s just about shorts weather. 20.6c currently, largely sunny.

Northernlights - Haylage has been bailed and wrapped which shows how good May has been.

Many thanks for the explanation.  Makes complete sense.

    Update on water scarcity situation:

    %2Fmethode%2Ftimes%2Fprod%2Fweb%2Fbin%2F
    WWW.THETIMES.CO.UK

Half of Scotland has been placed in “early warning” for water shortage, following a significant drop in rainfall this spring. Levels in Loch Maree in Wester Ross are now so...

Not to be ‘that guy’ but we do need some rain. Ground is getting hard.

Roasting today, already 20.7c. Perfect weather (just some overnight thunderstorms needed to soak the grass)

  15. Some very welcome rain overnight although only 2mm.

The days all seem to merge into one at the moment. Sunny at times, 18-20c and dry. Very useable

Today is far more humid than recently, currently a warm feeling 19.2c with high level cloud. Looks very settled going forwards, quite normal for the time of year.
