As with Salty above, things have cooled down over the past couple of hours. Temp has fallen slowly but steadily, and is now +0.5. Snow has started to settle in past hour, in what is best described as light to moderate snow. Small, regular sized flakes. Can't seem to find M74 cams north of Beattock?
I concur, 0.9c now so falling pretty fast. Some surfaces are turning white. Can we clutch victory from the jaws of defeat?

Pretty persistent light snow here, not lying yet. Temp 1.8c and falling
Hills turning white though.
I think overnight, as others have said, will be the best chance. The sun is pretty strong during the day

Some very light snow here, 4c so not doing much at all. All very uninspiring, raw feeling day and slate grey skies

Breathtaking view this morning
It’s that glow just above the horizon that gets me. I love the air quality from a Northerly

Looks like the BBC have completely dismissed the northerly push much into Scotland on Friday. Might be best looking towards Monday & Tuesday of next week for some of us.
They do just react to the models are are behind. However I reckon the central belt needs some luck, I have a chance but not the snow totals I was looking at a few days ago. Let’s hope it trends North, we all don’t need much!

XC has significantly reduced my snowfall amounts for Thurs/Friday. Will expect further southwards corrections but hope for the best, a bit gutted.

@Hairy Celt Sorry! If it’s any consolation I think it’ll get nowhere near that far North.
@Kirkcaldy Weather Fantastic post! It’ll all go wrong now as those charts are pretty perfect IMBY

9 minutes ago, A Winter's Tale said:Hopefully we don’t see any further southward shift - history suggests that will continue unfortunately. In any case I think the south eastern corner of Scotland is likely to see quite a lot of snow - how much remains to be seen. At the moment my location is just on the edge - any southward movement and the north side of Glasgow missed out. I expect areas to the south east will do quite well providing we don’t see another shift south. There could be more opportunities for frontal snow afterwards but probably not if the same potential as Thursday/Friday.
Be a shame for the central belt. I might even miss out if this continues although I do remember being predicted to miss in 2013 and it made it a little further North than predicted on the day. Typically the models over correct south and then almost come back to a middle ground solution. We shall see, be pretty disappointing if England gets all our snow! This winter has been fairly poor snowfall wise for the southern half of Scotland we deserve some luck!

Very much depends where the school staff travel from. Worst of the weather was to the East, for example my boss travels early from Aberdeen to Westhill. She was in the car for 2hrs this morning and I don't think she even got outwith the bounds of Aberdeen. Fubar news is littered with reports of roads closed, mainly blocked by stuck lorries or busses.
Incidentally I made a suggestion via various local politicians that Aberdeenshire Council consider a policy of actively favouring employing staff who live nearer schools, and/or setting up a 'swap database' for people who'd prefer working nearer where they live. Partially for resilience reasons in adverse weather, mainly for the impact on CO2 outputs from 'unnecessary' car travel. I could cycle to the nearest secondary school yet I commute nearly 50 miles every day, and there'll be teachers at the nearest school that do the same in the opposite direction.
A couple of the local councillors/MSPs did follow up on it and asked the council what their policy towards that would be. The response was that they wouldn't consider it because they felt that having a policy of preferring to employ staff based on their proximity to their workplace could potentially fall foul of employment legislation. They didn't even seem to acknowledge the possibility of teachers swapping schools voluntarily. After a few emails back and forth I gave up.
Really, were screwed on climate change if we don't get more radical in how we react to try to avoid it.
What a great idea but seems like you’ve tried to fight the machine. Never goes well sadly.
I work for the emergency services, first station I worked at was 100 mile round trip. I did it daily for over 4 years.
Eventually through the toys out the pram when new recruit was going to be travelling in the opposite direction, we’d pass on the road. They finally swapped us which suited both parties. However this kind of thing goes on all the time, someone else I started with still does a 100 mile round trip and that’s over 5 years now.
Don’t get me started on (lack of) infrastructure.Don’t get me started on everything being centralised which means we travel to Glasgow for every training course (150 mile round trip). Which used to be done locally. All in diesels, often taking separate cars.
As you say, we’re screwed.Anyway, gorgeous day. Tomorrow looks just as good and i’m going up Blencathra so hopefully get some decent pics.
Have all my fingers crossed for Thursday/Friday, don’t want too many more southerly corrections. This morning’s ECM was sweat inducing.

Getting 2013 vibes but I shall refrain from getting excited as the end of the week low coulf easily agonisingly miss up to the South or down here, quickly turn to rain…. I have my fingers crossed though!
Looks like a sunny few days ahead, will be enjoying some sunshine for certain

Some lovely springlike days over the weekend. Noticeable how dry it’s been.
Hopefully our hills get a much needed winter coat next week at the very least. Have my fingers crossed for a bit more…
Brilliant pics in this thread re the Northern lights, i’ll need to try and see them at some point. Saw this photo on twitter (Not my photo) and thought it was pretty spectacular from the top of a munro:

Last few days have been fab. Was out for my nana’s 99th birthday, lovely sunny day.
Had only had 3 hours sleep off the nightshift so not feeling fresh but the weather is feeling springlike. Maybe a brief last blast of cold before it warms up.
Appreciate, as Northernlights says, that those further north and with any height can have winter return well into April/May. However down here March is basically last chance saloon. A snowy start to march would be cracking and then bring on the sunshine.
I bought an air con unit recently so that’ll guarantee a summer like 2007/2012!!

Every time I venture into the mad house recently I see references to March 2013. I was living here at the time and I have zero recollection of anything. It just doesn't register in my winter events to remember memory! Have I just forgotten? Was it just pish locally? What has my memory let escape?
What Norrance said really. I remember the impact of the SSW being long anticipated in the MOD thread. It was mainly pretty cold.
Then the talk started regarding a ‘slider’ low which arrived around the equinox. The Isle of Arran got battered by it -Arran residents reveal their struggle against snow and gales - Daily Record
WWW.DAILYRECORD.CO.UKHELICOPTERS were despatched to get vital supplies to households who were completely cut off by the snow and plunging temperatures.Locally it was our best snowfall since the 90s but slightly further NE Lockerbie had very little.

Gorgeous day here, 6.5c and sunny. No wind. Again, almost feeling springlike
Fields are so much drier than a few weeks ago, in pretty reasonable nick

Ben Nevis climbed yesterday, as many will know it’s a long one. Pure cardio, will only repeat to do CMD Arete. If I can avoid doing the ‘tourist path’ ever again in my life then I will.
Snow was icy and not that plentiful nor pleasant, snowline 800m. Had the summit to ourselves.
Of the circa 25 people we passed on the way up only 5 made it to the top, 2 of which being ice climbers who went up the North face with ropes. Pretty icy

Lovely day here, ‘only’ 6c but in the sun with light winds it feels pretty pleasant.
No sign of any real cold on the horizon. Happy with stormy or dry and sunny. Cba with the boring grey mildness.
We have had some epic March months in very recent times (2013 - the best snowfall since 1995/1996 down here) and the 2018 beast (I was in the central belt for that one)… however for meaningful cold it’s a real struggle down here in the tropical South unlike further north/with any elevation.
April 2020 had lots of snow showers but nothing ever lay.
Too soon to say winter is over, probably 8 weeks too soon infact and i’ll be chasing the snow on the munros for months to come (Ben Nevis tomorrow ) but the strengthening sun is making the prospect of spring a welcome one.
Summers, apart from being wet, are good down here. Aboyne is warmer in summer but not many other places are, it’s a shame I don’t tan (cries).

Awful weather, 3.5c and drizzle. Next 24 hours looks not much better.
Bring back the cold- 4

Something that resonated with me from my trip away was a convo I overhead from two guy (in their late 40s if i’m being kind) and they were saying how ‘there’s lots of fresh snow at the carpark. I took the new van up with the kids when it was empty. Traction control - OFF. RWD - ON and then sent the thing flying about’. He then said ‘I turned to the kids and went don’t tell your mum!’. Just brilliant, you don’t need to ever fully grow up!

D&G council seem to have had a bad few days with regard to gritting in our patch (try harder Garry!), including the Lockerbie to Eskdalemuir bus sliding off the road. Fortunately it was the mid-morning rather than schooltime trip, so bus was quiet. Nevertheless, driver in shock. Drove up to East Neuk yesterday pm for a funeral today, with only 'hazard' being few flakes of snow West Linton area. Sadness of today's event somewhat lifted by the glorious dry weather here in Elie.
The roads are a joke. I have been south of the border recently, borders, south lanarlshire and up north most recently. The potholes are horrific compared to every other council region. Genuine tyre killers on almost all roads often including main routes.
Weather wise, now that i’m back in the tropical south it was feeling toasty today at 4.5c in strong sunshine. Some shaded back roads are lethal, wee covering of snow left.
Southern uplands looking resplendent, (proper) snowline 350m.- 5

I managed to head south avoiding the weather warning, currently protected by the Perthshire snow shield.
A stunning day climbing Coire Na Ciste via Gully 2. Photos were taken on just a phone which do not do it justice. The fresh snow was thigh deep in places on the Eastern side of the slopes.
I’ve had sublime conditions whilst being away, v lucky.- 26

Same here, lovely fluffy flakes. Not lying currently.
Ended up with a couple centimetres on Friday morning, a shame as it snowed for around 12 hours. Yesterday was a stunning day, I do love the crystal clear skies you get with a Northerly.
Was down at the coast and the lake district hills looked pretty good
