I know what you mean ! My plan longer term is to get out of London, as I find the vibe can be quite stifling over time - those things you said you enjoyed, which I do too - the hustle and bustle, crowds and sheer intensity of working and spending most of my time in/near the city centre - just gets a bit much sometimes.

Plus I love camping, hiking, and mountaineering so my plan is to mover either west country or up north!

I'm quite lucky as I live quite far out. And living on the edge of a large town, I have countryside on my doorstep. Which reminds me of the other con of working in London... the transport cost. I dread to think what it is now, when I left in 2010 it was over £4K for an annual pass.

Grass is always greener lol...I feel the same tbh. I'll still love London for day trips and evenings out etc, but living/working there. Not forever, at least for me anyway.

When I was in Cornwall last month, I was in a place near Porthcurno called Treen. Tiny village with just a single cafe, a pub, the farm shop where you could buy fresh milk and eggs etc, and then the campsite where I stayed, with a campsite amenities shop. It was honestly amazing to spend some time in somewhere so laid-back, unhurried, and friendly/local. It made me realise that's all I need/want long-term. London just makes you feel like you constantly need to do, be and have more, but thats kind of the point isn't it - its the beating heart of urban Capitalism, at least in our part of the world!

That sounds like bliss to me. Unhurried and laid back. I kinda agree with everything you say.

Yeah I get that. It is good for having a pint at lunch or an after work get together.

The worst aspect for me is the commute from Ealing in outer west London to mansion House. It’s just a drag of a journey.

And to answer Absence of Seasons, I do see the appeal for hanging out with co workers, but don’t seem to do it as often now as I did in the 2008-14 era.

Its mostly come to work and go home for me nowadays, so the city has less attraction for me.

However, living in outer London (Zone 3 and beyond) is a completely different baby compared to working in central London. If I worked from home, I don’t think I would have the same need to leave London.

Working in zone 1 has its perks with more variety of things to do, but it’s just so busy at times. There’s naturally pros and cons.

Living in the countryside or a small town 30-40 outside London, and working from home permanently might become isolating after a while.

Yeah the journey can be a gfuqhgfpjh. When I first worked in London it was near Tottenham Court Road and I loved it, but the journey was not great with a train and then two tube trains. I left to work locally. Would have stayed local if I wasn't headhunted to go back. Easier journey to Green Park and that was probably the best times. Company closed an office and we all went to Mayfair which wasn't so easy. If I wasn't made redundant, I'd probably still be there now.

What do you miss about it?

I work in the same area. Can’t wait to one day never work there again lol.

I miss my colleagues, the general hustle and bustle of the place. The get togethers after work and the feeling or buzz of being in London. I don't miss the train ride in or especially the sardines of a tube journey.

Maybe I'm just looking back with rose coloured spectacles. But personally, it was a good time in my career.

And like clockwork...skies clearing to near completely cloudless as we head into the evening. We don't even need cloud cover forecast at this point. It's the same every day 😂

Looks like you are right in the city of London. I miss working there.

If you are staying in Selby the East Yorkdhire Round Robin might be a good idea https://www.northernrailway.co.uk/tickets/rangers-and-rovers/yorkshire

I like these two ideas immensely. Thank you. York for a day definitely. Then the round robin for another day, getting off where I fancy. Thank you both.

Our heating broke yesterday. I feel like my life is mapping yours but a week behind. 😮

Ooh, we are up to 14.4c here. It's also trying to brighten up outside. Fingers crossed the sun wins out.
