  1. The forecasts have spot on this week, the accuracy in the forecasts has not diminshed if anything it has improved, would certainly agree about the need to increase the length of the forcasts though.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Without writing down exactly what was said each day I cannot say either way to be honest. One day they said it would be windy but it wasn't and Yesterdays was wrong. However if you leave out more detail theres less chance of being wrong.

Time allocation needs to go up but getting the beeb to do that is another matter. If they left out four annoying trailers that would help.

I've also got a feeling they adjusted the graphics again slightly as it does seem easier to read now.

  2. Have to say I am not at all happy about the lack of lightning symbols now on the main charts. Watching without sound, you would have no idea about the risk of thunderstorms later tomorrow with the charts just showing rain falling. Now that is dumbing down in my opinion.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Probably not mentioned as it will confuse the Joe six pack.

So blue covers Rainfall, Frost and Thunderstorms. Surely this has tol be more confusing. Also if you've got the sound down becuase you're on the phone how are you going to know the blue blob is either a storm, frost (night time) or just a normal shower.

The BBC forecast is now a very low standard.

  3. I'm still concerned about the dumbing down of the forecast. They certainly make very little issue of the wind. One day they said hold onto your Hats at Royal Ascot and then failed to mention any wind speed or show any of the useless arrows.

If they're not careful they'll end up with another fishy episode.

  4. Another poor Countryfile forecast, no mention of Friday and no synoptics during the week to give a guide.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    Glad I missed it.

Caught it on BBCi. Basically it's not worth watching these days as it's so badly dumbed down. Soon they'll be able to cancel it.

  5. Also, as an aside, Carol Kirkwood was in Shepton Mallett this morning, with blue skies behind her. However, on the weather map, it was showing it belting it down with rain in that part of the country!

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yes had that a few times with the new graphics here in Sheffield.

7 O'clock it's raining err no the suns out

    7 O'clock it's sunny err no it's raining

  6. Ok I will pass your points on.

With regard to 3) The weather is allocated anything upto 3 minutes on Countryfile. The forecast is live and flexible to time. The rest of Country File is recorded and weather fits in to fill the programme which last 29 minutes.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    Thanks Microburst.

Perhaps we ought too lobby our MP's to force the beeb to give more time.

More seriously I've said these graphics are more suited for an interactive web enviroment. Has the beeb got any plans to put these in on the web so you can pan zoom in and move around yourself??

  7. Back on topic.

The new display of the UK is better.

However the following are still true.

    1) No wind speeds given. Just silly arrows if that. It seems anything below 40 mph isn't worth mentioning.

    2) Alantic Weather maps displayed on country file were appalling. Try and make out the front without peering at the screen from 2 inches.

    3) Time given to the country file forecast too short hence details gets very vague from the first day on.

    4) Thundery showers just seem to displayed as ordinary showers.

    5) They aren't accurate enougth to give precise time of an hour for weather so I'd like it broken down like 6am , 9am 12pm 3pm etc. You then get a general idea of movement of any weather systems.

  8. Still need to do more modifications.

Wind Speed is far too vague to the point of being useless.

Rainfall seems to also effect the brown areas as well. Problem is it's the height of the rainfall falling making it difficult to tell wheres it falling due to angle of viewing.

Sunshine should change to yellow rather than light coffee.

Instead of panning how about pulling out the chunks of the country like a pie chart and then going into detail.

  9. Good news. Shows what happens when you don't properly research though.

Grahics would be ideal on the web though with full controls letting the user tilt pan rotate etc.

Hopefully they'll learn over this failed project and let some outsiders test it first.

  10. Yes it does look like we'll be stuck with the poor graphics until the next upgrade.

Due tot he industrial action switched over to ITV and low and behold a forecast that was easy to understand. Needless to say it was 2d and even picked up our morning sunshine. According the beeb it was cloudy unless Sheffield had moved to the east coast.

  11. Watched the Country File forecast and came away disappointed again.

Nice too see the isobars back but sadly they left of the Weather fronts. More dumbing down???

The detail on today was good and I thought "hey they're going to go into good detail" but sadly it was back to rush job and the maps flashed past while you tried to pick out the detail for you're area. A couple of times we're on the edge of rainfall but by the time I placed Sheffield the map had zoomed on.

    Wind was missing again disappointingly.

Interestingly they made the point of giving more detail as the old symbols were too big. I've got one suggestion for them. Decrease the height of the rain drops as this also covers too much of an area and can overlap.

Overall any farmers watching that are going to be disappointed.

If they're going to insist on these graphics can they stick it on the web make it interactive so you can zoom in on your area and run the sequance yourself.

By the way the petetion sums up very well what is wrong with the graphics and yes I signed it.

  12. I am sorry but Penny Tranter has just described the sunshine on the map as 'coffee coloured' Depends how you like your coffee    She must like hers milky!

And after such an exciting day of weather for many places not even a show of the radar (although mention of thunder, downpours and flash flooding) just the predicted movement of the rain now into Cornwall.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Today has been rather boring here. Fairly cloudy morning. Winds next to nothing a few sunny spells this afternoon and just a light shower a few minutes ago. The temp just dropped enougth now too persuade me to close the large window which has been open fully all afternoon.

Amusing that the sun has been demoted to coffee colour. Now the country file forecast now that should be interesting.

  13. Yeah I agree with you PIT,I do think had they given more time to the forecasts in the first place then the forecasts will get better as they are given more time to explain.

and I must admit these graphics are growing on me somewhat now though and the fact that the BBC are saying they are listening to complaints,it is a relief to me.

and why on earth do they say that pressure charts are big turn offs,I couldn['t believe and neither can my whole family, who actually understand the isobars just as easily as the symbols were.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Got to admit a lot of people couldn't understand the old weather and even more unlikely too understand the new one. Quite often many people took the snow symbol over Scotland to mean Snow all over the country. Neither would they understand the preasure charts.

However theres a lot that do and shouldn't the BBC be helping to educate anyway.

  14. Okay doke caught up with the local forecast.

Now here the forecast worked quite well as there wasn't any panning everything was close up. Also there was more time. Winds speeds were even shown hurray.

This really shows that for the national forecast unless the BBC gives them a good five - 10 minutes the new graphics won't work and are unsuitable for the task.

On todays national forecast the east coast was forgotten.

  15. I've got it from the National forecasts which have been accurate the next day, certainly for this area. But maybe there is more ambiguity in the forecasts, But IMO they have been accurate.

The regional forecasts (BBC Wales) are longer than before and there has been widespread use of winds and pressure charts, in fact pressure charts are being used far more on regional forecasts than ever was the case before the change.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I'm not arguing with you as the forecast maybe working for you. There used to a regional forecast before 6.30 but that no longer happens. I presume they do the first one at seven and by then I left for work.

Overall this week has been the worst forecasting for the longest I remember. Some of this maybe due my misinterpretion of the graphs.

As others have stated the new graphics need more time and the BBc doesn't like giving time too forecasts.

on a side note I guess they won't mention wind speeds until they gust to 50 mph.
