  1. It's disturbing, isn't it, to hear about drivers who can spot the tiniest splurge of sleet on the windscreen, when they are supposed to be concentrating on the road. ;) The eyes should be focused onto the road (or way) ahead and not onto the windscreen! :)

    Hopefully the Women I was behind this evening won't be in it. Had no idea how wide her vehicle was and used the white line as the line to drive down. If she ever sees a Snowflake she'd stop dead and ring her husband on a mobile to bring a shovel.

    If gets heavy enougth I may take some photos of how safe these speedhumps are in snow.

  2. Not sure what the problem is there- not getting that issue here. How did you get this problem? Tell me what search string you have in the 'Command String Editor' box and I should be able to help. If I have 'YearCET > 10' then it works fine for me.

    Guess what it's working now. :(:)

  3. Okay lets go for November.

    November will be another mild month. This will ensure that Autumn will be amongst the warmest recorded. South Westerlies will dominate and probably be stronger than they were during October so it's likely they'll be several noteable gales theres effecting the West and North West most of all. At times the East may suffer from gusty conditions.

    Sunshine will be below normal in the West and North and around normal in the South and South East. Rainfall will be above normal in the North and West and close to just below normal in the East and South.

    Temperatures 0.5C to 1C above normal in the North and West and between 1C to 2C in the South and East.

    Frosts will be a rare event this month with any air frosts preserved for Scotland and the Valleys.

    Snowfall will be confined to the Peaks of Scotland and probably be a complete abscene from England and Wales as any cooler air will hardly penetrate South.

  4. To be honest Sunshine_Gal, you should phone your Travel Agents HQ, ask for the CEO, and ask why the heck his/her company didnt know about Wilma, its lives at stake and his/her company should make it their business to know the very latest.

    True and I bet if you went out there unknowingly and tried to claim compensation they'll soon have all the facts to say it wasn't there fault.

    Anyone know hows the eye rebuilding going on???

  5. Thanks all for your continued support and thoughts here.  :)

    We called MyTravel head office this morning to be told "but it's been downgraded to a cat 2"....we soon put the girl right and the best she could do was tell us to call back on Friday. They don't have a clue what's happening.

    OH's guess is a delay at Glasgow for around 5 hours or so depending on when she's due to hit then a nice slow flight over and if the worst comes to the worst dump us in Washington or something for a few hours  ;) anything just so they won't have to pay us cancellation money. We've tried to get an extension on the holiday but unless we come back through an English airport it's no can do, we'd consider that but the car will be left at the airport here so it probably wouldn't work.

    I'm quite happy as long as we get there, I don't mind hunkering down in our hotel if we have to, taking video and lots of photos etc.  ;)

    Will keep y'all updated thanks again everyone. Boro dave you go tomorrow yeah, safe journey and enjoy yourself, see you there!!!!!  :)

    They're probably totally unaware there was a Hurricane around and probably think you're some nut ringing up larking around. I bet the Girl was going round the office going whats the Flintstones got to do with a Hurricane. Blank looks and someone found an old article about Rita and quoted you that.

    I doubt very much she ring back Friday becuase

    a) She won't have made a note of your number.

    :D Still won't know whats going on.

    c) Probably doesn't work Friday anyway.

  6. We mustn't forget [Have I got this all wrong?], that these SST charts are showing anomalies and not actual temperatures?? :)   :)

    Now (the way I see it? :) ), the seas around Greenland/Iceland have cooled earlier this autumn than they would normally do. But, in the long term, seawater can get no colder than -2C? What this means [i think] is that as winter progresses, the negative anomalies will either shift elsewhere or disappear altogether - but it won't mean that the actual SST is necessarily increasing though?? :blink:   :)

    IMO, if the SSTs to our north and northwest settle at or around the thirty-year mean during the coming winter, we COULD be in for a treat??? :D   :D

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    Doh didn't think of that. Too simple really.

  7. This is dragging it further off topic, but what the hell.

    If the UK had a genuine big freeze this winter, it would really ram home the shortcomings of the selfish society we live in. Technology should enable us to cope better, but in reality it's reserved for the privelidged few, but we've been resting on our laurels for too long. The big freeze would expose:

    - the inadequacy of the public transport system;

    - the overstretched road network;

    - the inability of roger to adapt to the road conditions;

    - the lack of care for one's fellow human being;

    - the lack of financial support for the emergency services and healthcare;

    - the lack of forward planning by utility companies with privatisation allowing fatcats to swallow up all the profits that would previously have been available to the public purse/enable sufficient forward emergency planning; and

    - the unsustainable work-dominated lifestyles that many people are coerced into (epitomised by having to travel miles to get to the workplace) would grind to a halt.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    Sums it up pretty well to be honest.

  8. I agree with you mate, the winter of '95/'96 up here was very, very cold and I don't remember any power problems whatsoever!! It's similar to the misconcpetion that high oil prices=high fuel prices. I don't remember exceptionally low fuel prices in 1998 when oil could be bought for $10 a barrel. Typical panic mongering by the media!!

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    Roughtly 56p per litre in 1996.

  9. so because we get a cold winter everyone dies off? That's how they seem to interpret it.

    If we can't survive a cold winter then how did we ever survive the winters of 1991 and 1987? The most recent years with a very cold month.

    Simple, we could get a winter like 1917, 1947, 1955, 1963 and even worse and we would be ok. Their making a big deal out of nothing.

    As usual.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    Well there was a lot less demand on the grid than there is now. It's also quite likely the the power system isn't up to scratch as well due to cut backs etc. In a few places the the electricity is up to max so any extra loading and fizz out go your lights.

    If we have a really cold Winter and with most people no longer used to even slight cold the demand will rocket. I'd expect a lot of long power cuts. We get two to three a year now which last three to four hours each time. Any Powercuts in bad snow would probably last days and engineers would probably have to be flown in from elsewhere due to staffing cuts. This has happened already in recent Winters.

    Driving well the roads would simply stop until people get used to driving in such weather again.

    The elderly would be worst hit as many would be unable to afford the heating and as prices rise this group will get more and more vunerable.

  10. But the Meto never said it would be a cold winter. They just said the Coldest since 1995/1996. When in fact 1995/1996 wasn't really a cold winter. it was on the cool side but not notably cold.

    If we end up with a slightly mild/average winter it will still mean the coldest since 1995/1996. There hasn't even been a winter of 0.1c colder then average since then!

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    Colder than average and if it turns out to be another mild one the media will have a field day and take them to the cleaners. Also one or two heads of companies will be slightly non plussed. It's only a warning and not set in concrete hence the word unjust in my post.

  11. I'd be interested to see how the UK would react to a proper Hurricane. I see the following happening.

    1) Alert issued

    2) 99% of People go Huh and then go to work as normal

    3) Bosses sack the 1% for not turning up for work. They're fit for work as they were seen securing there houses.

    4) Hurricane hits causing mass chaos on the roads as Lorries and coaches are blown across motorways. Police decide it's a good idea to close the Motorways too high sided vehicles.

    5) Billions of pounds of damage large loss of life.

    6) Enquiry launched as to why there wasn't any evac planned for the area in the storms path.

    7) Meto blasted for not issuing enougth warnings.

    :) New Minister for GW appointed.

    9) Micheal Fish brought back as head of MetO.

    10) Insurance Companies raise Home Insurance 200%
