Been following over the past 24 hours, what's obvious is the huge level of uncertainty.
Must be a real headache for the forecasters, there are a range of outcomes and the most severe ones may not become evident until much closer to time.
I work in a wine shop, we've discussed trying to avoid as many Friday deliveries as possible in case it's wild! Get your wine in nice and early is what I'd say

Wow, what a start to the day!
Flash flooding going into Kingsbridge from West Alvington about 8.15. My wife works at school and they have been flooded in some parts of the building, but thankfully not too serious.
Then plenty of forked lightning which we had an amazing view of parked up the top of town.
Now round two in Salcombe! Less frequent lightning but heavy rain. Here's a nice shot looking down towardsNorth Sands with a beautiful cloudscape (photo doesn't do it justice)

We are up the top of Salcombe, looking over towards East Portlemouth and beyond and the forked lightning is amazing! One particular crawler as well.

Looking NE from Salcombe is great, couple of anvils on the horizon. The one near Axminster maybe? Pity I can't upload my photo.

Is it sunny where you are? I see blue skies your way, and some Cu bubbling up.
Just passed 21°C. Feels pretty ripe! Fingers crossed.
Beautiful day in Salcombe, quite the turnaround after the mist this morning!
Didn't have my phone on my walk just now, but you can see some decent convection going to the north over Dartmoor and much further east. Also looks ripe for a good storm later on, if not necessarily here then not a million miles away!

I posted on Monday that a real soaking looked possible for somewhere in our region. It seems some parts of Devon have had 70-90mm and it’s still raining.
14mm in Warminster, hardly anything not far East from here.
Yep! Still raining in Kingsbridge, been raining since midday yesterday. I don't have access to 24 hour radar but seems it didn't stop overnight either!
Can well imagine some of the local higher ground areas will have had even more rain.

Cracking evening. best part of the day
Yes, you are doing well out to the west!
Relentless rain here. Doesn't look like it's going to clear any time soon from the South Hams...

Absolute filth in Kingsbridge!
Rained since midday and got heavier as the afternoon has progressed

Interesting development of the clump of showers south of Cornwall and Devon. The southern tail of it has some very intense rainfall, really kicked into gear the past 20min. Some lightning activity too.
Impressive to see it spinning its way north and east, quite unusual!

Now a wintry mix of hail/graupel and the very odd flake of snow in Kingsbridge. Thrilling stuff

V light snow in Kingsbridge.

Yep, radar returns not reflective of situation here in Kingsbridge. Not a flake or drop of rain!

Looking at the wind direction charts and there is a little window of opportunity tonight for those further west.
Wind due to become more easterly, which will see a few showers develop in the Channel and move towards southern Devon coasts for example.
Met warning for midnight to 11am tomorrow reflects this. On va voir!

Definite activity south Devon particularly south hams. Looking good for some snow flurries this morning
Yep! Subtle change in wind direction overnight and showers are forming nicely over the open water and heading in this direction.
Only a very, very light dusting on some surfaces here in Kingsbridge, would need to pep up significantly in order to have any impact. But it counts as snow!

There was a horrendous hour near Sidmouth around 01.00 . I need to review the radar later as it sounded awesome wind and rain wise.
Yeah it seems it was a very active hour or so!
Have to say the wind woke my son up around 12.30, Kingsbridge wasn't that bad but I can remember hearing stuff clattering around outside before he shouted for me. I wasn't all that alert

Morning all! Very windy in KB about midnight here, though nothing terrible.
TORRO FB post this morning asking if there had been any reports of severe weather bit further west. One of the showers around midnight had an interesting signature near to Plymouth.
Must have been reasonably bad as the click and collect marquee at Sainsbury's Marsh Mills had taken a bit of a battering! Marquee was out of service this morning

Pretty rubbish day in Kingsbridge. Decidedly autumnal at times!
Wind is actually gusting quite strongly tonight, we aren't expected to see the worst of Storm Ellen by any means, but certainly a big change from recent times.
-
Wow, parts of Mid and W Devon getting an absolutely pasting.
Quiet as you like daan saaf in Kingsbridge

Constant grumbling thunder now to the west, but Kingsbridge has pretty much escaped in the middle! The way it goes I guess!
I can imagine some very bad localised flooding in places not far from here though.

I wouldn't want to be in the Met's shoes having to decide on where a red warning should go.
What is clear though is the winds are going to hit at busy times during the day. The SW in general is going to see it bad during rush hour and the school run. Many thousands of people will be preparing to travel down for half term. So even if we see the winds drop a notch, the severity of impact is still going to be high because of the numbers of people scheduled to be out and about.
That all said, I can totally understand the desire to hold off as late as possible. The public in general need to be in a position to readily accept the warning and act properly. Also the consequences of schools etc potentially being shut means certain businesses will not be able to open, which has its own financial impact. It's a very complex mix and isn't just down to whether the wind gusts are going to be 80mph or 85mph.
