  1. There's hope for the coast yet!

A minute ago I looked out of the window and nothing was happening so I went into the bathroom to start cleaning it (no windows in there which can be looked out of.Suddenly I heard boyfriend shouting to me came and looked out of bedroom window and saw there is a near blizzard going on outside now with strong gusts of wind and very heavy snowy haily stuff falling.

Yeah, even managed a short snow flurry here down the coast a short while ago!

  2. Hi Paul, are you right on the coast because im about 6 or 7 miles in land and we just had brief snow and hail shower here. As others have said there seems to be quite a bit of convection getting going a bit further north. What do you think the chances of this moving over us in suffolk later on. Regards Billy

Hi Billy, I'm about a mile in from the coast, so pretty close to it. I think there's a reasonable chance of further showers as we go through today although I don't think there will be anything particularly notable in terms of snow. Wouldn't mind being wrong though!

  3. I really wouldn't expect much snow from now on in...it looks like staying over the near continent. The 18z NAE also suggests this: http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/nae/2010/12/22/basis18/ukuk/rsum/10122418_2218.gif

well this cold spell just been one big let down here on norfolk coast!!! what little snow we got last thurs night got washed away today by rain!! which was surposed to be snow what a joke so cant believe we will get any more now lol

Forgive me for asking, but are you from Beccles? I ask because Beccles isn't really on the coast, and it certainly isn't in Norfolk as your location says! :smiliz19:

  4. Snow here for the last hour, some moderate - a light covering over everywhere that didnt still have snow.......yet radar has the band quite a long way north of here?!?

I don't take an awful lot of notice of the radar over East Anglia nowadays to be honest, so many times it rains when there's nothing showing over my area, or it rains harder than what is being shown. Paul told me there was going to be an upgrade to the radar covering East Anglia last year, but this doesn't seem to have happened because the radar coverage for this area is quite frankly abysmal.

  5. I heard thunder on Saturday morning as well, but don't recall anything on Friday night. I do know that the lights were flickering quite a bit on Friday night, this seemed strange to me as the severe gales were the night before! Whether that has anything to do with it I don't know.

EDIT, just found this on the Lancashire Evening Post website, from the comments section:

Did anyone else see the massive sparks showering down on Friday night from the pylons down by the docks? I was driving under them when they all exploded and the street lights went out. Scary!

  6. Remember it well, even though it was 23 years ago! I was in east Suffolk at the time and had never heard wind like it or seen damage like it, it was an unbelievable night. The evening was so warm and quiet then in the early hours you could hear the roar of the wind approaching and then the storm hit during the early hours.

It was mainly the far southeast that was hit badly, the coasts of Suffolk, Essex, Kent and Sussex:

  7. How long ago was that? Jim gave the local forecast on Radio Northampton just the other morning and he often pops up on Look East.

Jim Bacon runs his own weather company now, Weatherquest. He is a fantastic man and a top forecaster.

I certainly agree with Gavin P about the last of the old school being filtered out of the BBC national forecasts, very, very sad and disappointing to see.

I wonder how long it will be before a major weather event hits the country and then the media bemoan the lack of experienced forecasters!

  8. It is a great shame about this as all three are highly respected and knowledgable meteorologists. Personally I haven't watched the BBC national forecasts since they changed to those awful, awful graphics in 2005, because it was clear then where the future for television weather forecasts on the BBC was headed IMO. I am not sure how it will save the BBC money if the men in question are moved into backroom "management roles" though? But then what do I know!

When you look back at archive weather forecasts, it is so sad to see the sorry state of affairs today: http://www2.tv-ark.org.uk/weather/bbc.html

  9. Good grief, the ramping has started early this year! Heaven help the admins/mods on here when/if we end up with a mild winter as there seems to be some very high expectations around this year. Yes, there are some favourable signs for another colder winter, but its very early days yet.

  10. squall line east of Ipswich on radar?

Yes, had a pretty squally spell of weather here a short while ago with torrential rain, gusty winds and almost continous thunder and lightning! Not checked rainfall total yet, but a lot of localised flash flooding around here. An impressive period of weather for sure! Radar shows the core of the storm passed overhead this area, and it certainly seemed it!

  11. I have recently arrived back from a stay in East Anglia, did not notice any ash, of course the place was bloody freezing, even more so this year than usual.

    Russ

Tell me about it! Hate this part of the world in the spring with these dratted north-easterlies.

Seems that plenty of aircraft are reporting ash:

The Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland continues to erupt to a height of between 15-20,000 feet. The eruptions are fairly constant and continuing. Various aircraft reported ash over the mid Atlantic yesterday evening and also an ash cloud near the Pyrenees around 35000 feet. The dense areas of volcanic ash are expected to move across parts of France and Italy today. Issued at 0646 on Sun 09 May 2010.

One hopes that safety isn't being comprised by the airlines.

  12. This volcano is likely to result in at least one relationship breakdown. This is true. Someone I know went away last Thursday morning and told his other half he was going for a fishing weekend and would be back late Sunday. In fact he went abroad in Spain with his secretary who he is having an affair with, and last I heard (yesterday) he was still stranded out there! That's going to take some explaining me thinks!

  13. I dont think the buck stop with the engine manufacturers. Its the airlines decision to fly. I read somewhere that engine manuacturers have recommended full strip strip and service after each flight. CCant see that happening.

I fear reprecussions further down the line when plane engines wear and tear much quicker due to ash damage and the engines aren't fully serviced after every flight as recommended.

  14. I am absolutely staggered at what has developed tonight. A total disregard for public safety, I will never fly with British Airways again. I sincerely hope and pray that hundreds of people don't lose their lives because of greed. What happens if this situation occurs again in the future? Just keep flying until a disaster does occur?
