  1. Heavy snow here on and off since about 0700am. About 3cm now on top of the snow that fell earlier in the week. 3rd significant fall in 10days here.
  2. Lovely pic thanks, think I will keep that one as a reminder of the With all this snow about I have been trying to keep my path, driveway etc clear and rather than shovel it I have come up with a plan. Not sure if anyone else has done this but I have one of those garden hoovers that also doubles up as a leaf blower. Well....if the snow is fresh enough, ie powder, use the blower..and it works! Bonus is you have your own instant blizzard
  3. I very much agree, at my location I had 10cm last week and 16cm on Sun/Mon, thats a total of 26cm! Not counting the few cm I had in Dec as well. Still have about 5cm of level snow in my back garden at the moment. City has not had any real problems dealing with this, in fact I would say I had more hassle with ice this year when it comes to driving.
  4. Wow, deepest snow I have had here in Edinburgh for many years. We had a measured 12cm up on the hill overnight. Side roads barely passable but the main roads OK.
  5. Been snowing here now for about 30min. About 2cm of lying snow. Road outside is barely passable. If the sky clears and this lot freezes its going to be a hairy commute tomorrow  Will carry some grit in the car  Temp -1C DP -2C
  6. Started snowing lightly here in Edinburgh (Gyle) about 20 min ago. Very, Very fine flakes.
  7. Never mind "lee low" to the North there is also now a circulatory pattern East of Aberdeen. Pressure charts showing this as a trough at the moment.
  8. I have also been watching that for the past hour or so. Quite a rapid build up.
  9. Thanks SC, just seen your comment on the "lee low". That explains the topographical connection.
  10. As an amateur I have not heard of a lee low unless associated with topographical features before, is this then the same as a "comma low"? If a PL passes close to or over GB, then yes significant snowfall Missed that one but yes a "lee low" could also cause a significant snowfall
  11. MetO just updated their forcast for my loc and are still saying heavy snow around midnight and light snow for the next 12 hrs. Wish I could see where this is comming from.
  12. Is that a Gotcha  I think most will see some snow, that front will slowly edge southwards, and as it does the chances increase. Temp are dropping again and as far as I can see the cold air is just now passing over N Scotland. Million Dollar (Euro) question is how much? I honestly don't know, in my location it all depends how much of an Easterly component there is to it. Very, very rarely does a straight Northerly produce much in Edinburgh. Go 30 miles south or 60 miles north and you could get a good dumping. In tonight case I also think that the air is dryer and therefore total falls might be lower than expected.....but I hope I am wrong.
  13. If you look at the Infrared sat pic on that link and set it to loop you will see a circulatory pattern just off the coast of Norway. It has the distinctive comma shape. Must say though that DX is probably right, this one is caused by wind shear. Read the link he posted, it explains it well. I am probably just clutching at straws at the moment. <_<
  14. Mmmm...... Have a look at the Sat pics Here just off the NW coast of Norway. Am I seeing things or is that......(look for the circulation)
  15. I am going cross-eyed looking at the rainfall and IR radars At first It looked to me that the front has to an extent stalled over Scotland, pushing that northerly flow away to the west. But if you look very carefully at the IR radar at Sat24 it looks to me that this flow is cutting in under the SW flow (if that makes sense). If so we might still get some snow but the temps need to drop as well. As I mentioned in a previous post mine has jumped up to 1C and DP 0C (from -1C and -2C an hour ago).
  16. Had about 20min of very fine snow here which has given a slight covering on very cold ground. Can see that Northern plunge quite clearly now on the Sat pics (actually being held up slightly by the front) but am still of the opinion that this is drier air, ie I still cannot see where any heavier precip will come from. Bearing in mind that the heavier stuff over the highlands is often due to elevation in a Northerly. Am I missing something Temp -1C DP-2C at the moment. May be of some interest to others near my location that the temps should in fact start rising soon but do not fear...They will drop quickly again as that colder air (fluffy stuff on the IR radar) reaches us.
  17. Happens a lot to me, trying to convince my colleagues that I actually had snow where they had rain in the city. I need to sign off now but I hope its going to be a busy tomorrow night
  18. I should realy also keep count, wish I had this winter. I have lost count how many times I have had to scrape the cars and have gone though more bags of grit and tins of anti-freeze this season that I have in the previous 5 winters. I do know that I have had two sub -8C nights with an absolute minimum of -8.9C in December (my weather thingy recorded that ) Temp now down to -4C as I type DP still at -5C
  19. Yep all the snowmelt had already frozen around my way by 5pm Welcome to NW by-tor, have fun on here. I have noticed that as well, rainfall averages are about the same believe it or not but the Gulf Stream must push up the humidity on the west coast a fair bit. The snow has been good I agree but the thing that amazes me this year in Edinburgh is how easily the temp drops below 0C, and then not just by 1 or 2 degrees as in the past but even further. -3C at the moment and still dropping.
  20. Thanks for that update Shuggee, much appreciated. There is a Easterly component to this Northerly which is what we need for snow here in Edinburgh so I am more optimistic about tomorrow nights event. My only concern is that there is enough precipitation. Might also start a wee bit earlier, say late afternoon. I have already gone through 20kg of grit the last few days around the house, so I need something to justify it to the family. :o Temp now -3C and DP -5C
  21. Thanks for the chuckle, think you can say that of us all tonight. Oh well I am off to do some reading. Looking more interesting later in the week. Anyone notice the pm temps for Sunday night
  22. Heavier precip here now turned to sleet. Temp steady at 2C and DP at 1C. Probably need to be above 300m or therabout for snow here.
  23. Constant light rain here now. Still not washing the snow away as yet though. This is actually what the MetO have been forecasting for my location the whole day, so spot on for them. They still say it will be turning to snow later so here hoping.
  24. Looking at the radar there seems to be a band of heavier precip heading this way, should be here in about 30 min. Might be heavy enough to lower DP's again for a while. Better chance if your location is higher and further inland. Yep, mine has also gone up to 2.5c and DP 1C
