So I took the plunge and bought this new fangled Davis WeatherLink console which arrived yesterday. Whilst I haven’t gone into every file folder or graph as yet, I just thought I’d let you know my personal opinion of it.
Firstly, the main reason I wanted it was really to be able to view all the basic info from across the room which I couldn’t do with the old console you get with a Vantage Vue. For this purpose it does the job splendidly. A surprisingly large screen, easy to read, configure and set up, with a choice of what you want to see on the screen. You have a choice of 2x2 panels or 2x3 panels to view. Obviously the 2x2 panels are larger and easy to see from a distance but less info on show. 2x3 panels are what I’ve got it set to to maximise the info available as it’s still very easy to read from a distance. All good and working fine and great for what I wanted it for.
Now to the not so good bits. I already have WeatherLink live broadcasting to the internet and was rather hoping when I signed in on this console that I would be able to load all the previous historical data onto the console, but no! It’s like starting all over again and would appear that I need to start a new WeatherLink account ( I’m not that technically minded so I may be wrong there). Accessing other info such as graphs and other data I find more fiddly although I’m still finding my way around it at the moment.
For what I want it for, just viewing the temperatures, wind, rainfall etc from across the room, it’s fine, but I can’t help feeling that Davis has missed a trick or two here, and I’m hoping that some of these issues could possibly be solved with  firmware updates at a later date.
All in all I’m satisfied for what I want it for but can’t help feeling it’s rather pricey for what it is. A glorified tablet with a stand. Oh and it’s made in China, shame on you Davis.

After nearly a year of owning this console my general feeling is that it’s ok but really not worth the price tag. It was beset  with numerous problems for a great part of the year but various updates have gradually resolved these issues and all seems to be working fine now. For me it’s a handy device for seeing what the current conditions are outside and can be easily viewed from across the room but that’s about it really.

Is there any science behind the cold being embedded harder to shift or is this a bit of a myth? ....serious question btw!

No particular science, just years of me being a weather enthusiast. I think if this northerly does make it successfully to our shores and hangs around a few days then we’re in with a shot of the cold becoming embedded especially if there’s a fair amount of snow cover. This is what happened in 81 and it took until after Christmas until the Atlantic made inroads.

Can you turn the display off?

Also, what wind speed is that showing? I presume that's the 10 or 3 minute average?

As far as I know you can’t turn the display off without unplugging it (pointless really). The wind rose in the middle is a real-time display and will update every couple of seconds.

At the start of the new year in 1987 I’m sure there was an Arctic high, mild Sw’s across Uk, high pressure to the south and within a week or so we know what happened next.

My point is no matter how dire it may seem, things can change very quickly.

I remember it well, and just like now nobody had a scooby  what was happening until about 2 days before the floodgates opened from the east. Keep the faith

After lots of teasing and the will it? won't it amplify saga of the last few days.  Only the GEM holds out any hope for southern snow lovers this morning.

The rest coalescing around a more mobile outcome albeit with the mild/cold boundary moving up and down the Northern half of the UK.

Saving grace of this Christmas pattern is that it is very similar to Xmas 1978 and those of a certain vintage (like me) know what that went on to produce.

As Matty H points out above there is still some uncertainty going forward. Lets hope it's enough to bring us southern snow lovers into play as well.

I’ve been thinking exactly the same thing regarding the similar set up for 1978. Then we had an extremely mild autumn, a sudden flip to a very cold and frosty spell at the end of November/ start of December, then a return of mild Atlantic conditions before the big prize of severe cold from the NE and blizzards countrywide just in the closing days of December. Some of us will remember how the winter and spring panned out after that. Oh, and I know pattern matching rarely works by the way. Maybe wishful thinking. 🤷‍♂️
