  1. Well the snow had all but gone by this morning  , ah well, early days yet.

Today has been a day of sunny spell with blustery heavy showers accompanied by gusting winds circa 25mph. Currently receiving another heavy shower with a temperature of 4 degrees.

  2. I'd love to join but I'm worried about any initiation ceremony that I might have to attend. Would I have to expose anything up to knee level and are any sharp objects or dodgy handshakes involved? I'm relieved to see Lady P's is a SACRA member but she can take inordinate amounts of pain and Im just a wuss.

    Wuss :o

  3. Hhmmm, Let's see, Blackbird, Thrush (song and Mistle) Starling, Wren,Hedge sparrow (Dunnock), House sparrow, Tree sparrow, BlueTit,Great Tit, Coal tit,Long tailed tit,Greenfinch,Goldfinch,Bullfinch,Chaffinch,Woodpidgeon,Collard Dove,Robin,Jackdaw,Magpie,Crow,Jay,Sparrow hawk,Tawny Owl. in the vicinity (but not in the garden...yet).Green Woodpecker,Great spotted woodpecker,Buzzard, Curlew,Lapwing,Golden plover,Swift,Swallow House Martin,Cuckoo,Lots of L.B.J.'s over summer (fly catchers and Warblers mainly....I think!) Fieldfare,Redwing,Skylark,Brambling,Kestrel,Buzzard.

Probably more but I don't have as much time to watch as I'd like!

:) Blimey GW I had no idea you lived in a nature reserve.

I have been lucky enough to spot the following so far this year:

Feral Pigeon (AKA Domesticated Rock Doves who think they are Fred Astaire and tap dance on our roof)

    Carion Crow

    Blue Tit

    Greenfinch

    Robin

    Starling

    Blackbird

    House Sparrow

    Great Tit

There is also a bird of prey (i'm guessing) of some nature which regularly visits a huge Oak Tree which we have at the end of the garden. The noise it makes is unbelievable and all the other birds dissapear when it's around. However, I haven't managed to get a good look at it yet.

  4. Further to Dogs32's plight I thought that a brief explanation as to why some photo's are shown at a reduced size and why other images are shown at their full size, may help (correct me if i'm wrong anywhere within this guide Paul).

There are 2 angles that need to be looked at here and these angles are 'Uploaded' and 'Linked'.

If you 'Upload' an image from your PC directly into your post the NW Server has to work purely on its own to bring your photo(s) forward. Owing to the potential drain on Server resources for such practices, once your image is over a certain size there is a trigger in the coding behind the Forum which will reduce the image to a thumbnail to cut back on Server usage resources, which is why you will see it a reduced size and it will only enlarge when you click on it.

As an example of the potential risk of resource overload, (taking into account if the NW server showed images at their full size for 'Uploaded' pictures directly into any post of the forum), if you 'Uploaded' 20 images into a post and there were 500 members viewing that post at the same time, the amount of resources that the NW server would have to provide to bring those images forward in full size to all 500 users at the same time would be enormous (simply times 500 by the number of photos by the size (k or MB) of the photo). As a result it would likely slow the server to a halt and may even bring it down completely (hence the reason thumbnails are a better alternative, you still see the image and everyone else can still carry on browsing and adding to the rest of the Forum).

However, if you 'Link' to an external photo the NW server has to do far less work as it is the Server that the images are hosted on that are doing all the work.

If you 'Link' to it and it is hosted externally then the image will retain it's original size.

If you want to host your pics externally you have all the usual options such as Photobucket, My Space, FaceBook and all the others but there are some other free ones which don't require registration and are very simple to use. Some of these sites are: Imageshack.com, Imagehosting.com, Picoodle.com, Allyoucanupload.com etc.

Please use this information in addition to the great tips and guides that make up this thread and you can't really go wrong.

    Have fun.

  5. It looks like their server has fallen over, I'm sure that when someone at Metcheck gets out of bed and realises that there is a problem it will be up and running again (unless they have receive a DOS attack and are unable to cope of course  then things could take a little longer to put right  )
