  1. Rush2019 Suspect I was under that Ian. Hail and thunder for past half hour. Loud nearby cracks. Grass whitened. Had come up from Preston where, according to the Radio Lancs commentary, during the early part of the match at Preston NE v Rotherham it whitened the pitch and soaked the players . Storm has raced off over the Bowland Fells.
  2. Got a line of washing dry this morning. And now first spots and some driving hail have just arrived.
  3. All calm on the western front so far, but clouded over since 9am. 5.2 mm rain for the last 24hrs -- not much, but all adds to the deep slutch in the fields, specially as there's not much drying today.
  4. Had Worse Yes -- clouded over in last half hour - something black coming up from Cheshire.
  5. Pressure rising a bit. No sign of snow on the tops here. Temp 5.4C. Only 3mm rain for the last 24hrs. We missed those big thundery deluges yesterday.
  6. Rain this morning and a dry fairly bight afternoom. Cold breeze though -- max been 9.1C. Now looks very black towards Cheshire and N Wales.
  7. Rained ALL day here. Currently just the odd spit. The public lanes are flooded and mud has slumped from the edges where large vehicles have gone off the tarmac. Everywhere is a filthy wet mess. Birds other than the curlews. are in a silent sulk in all this gloom. Hope the sun comes out for the Easter holidays.
  8. 3.5mm collected this morning. Drizzling now. March so far 135.4mm. Calm and very misty and cloud is obscuring the fells. A dreary Monday morning. Even the birds are in a quiet sulk.
  9. Had Worse We worry up here about collapsed and silted drains under farmland, now much worse due to the increasing rain --- there's no end to the expensive maintenance. It's an endless challenge like painting the Forth Bridge. But what a responsibilty maintaining thousands of miles of railway track in good order to keep the public safe. There's now all sorts of monitoring kit to find potential voids under rail track. Try Googling-- void detection railways. However if no-one properly understands the amont of rain that has fallen and the drainage routes and is prepared to do some investigation with a spade -- then dangerous problems will reoccur. Sometimes new building developments add to surface outflow and increase uncetainty for places lower down. Yet more to detect. Anyway - Today is a drying day. Cold wind, but doing some good and reducing surface slutch. Some sun and only the odd very brief shower. Curent temp 6,1C
  10. 11mm picked up this morning for previous 24hrs, but a bright and sunny well scrubbed sky so far today though more cloudy this afternoon. Rain damage in all sorts of places showing up in the sunshne -- buildings, farmland, roads and on the railtrack nr Grange probably -- Hole found under track where train derailed at Grange-over-Sands WWW.BBC.CO.UK Four passengers and four staff members were on board when the train derailed at Grange-over-Sands.
  11. Spitting again but not wetting seriously. These folks seem uncertain about the weather forecast and are still wearing winter clothes.
  12. Aha -- Netweather fotecast has now found some showery rain for us this morning, then 4 hrs dry before another dose. Not raining ar present, but looking dark grey to the west.
  13. Raining now lightly. Plans for outdoor work scuppered again maybe? Will weather improve later ... or not. For the last 6 months we've had this unsettled wet weather. So difficult to plan anything. Sure enough if an "indoor" day is arranged -- then the sun will come out.
  14. 117.8mm rain for March so far here, above average already. So every month last Sept onwards has been above average. Not forgetting the record wet July last year.
  15. It's been a grand day really though humid. Max 12.5 C. Felt warm outside as the sun was shining most of the time. But a veil of cloud came over from the west since 4pm. Curlews have been very noisy this afternoon. Usually a sign of rain. Been outside most of the day surveying the sodden rain-trashed scene. I've succumbed to that serious malady --- "where-to-startitis".
  16. severe snowstorm What a whistle and what a beast. Shot in b & w apparently.
  17. Sullen grey, sunless and almost calm. But looking south towards Cheshire and S Lancs clouds seem more broken. 13.9 mm rain collected at 9 GMT today. March so far =101.6 mm. 2024 so far 489.6 mm.
  18. Some weak sunshine now and then but actually clouding up now -- can see thicker grey cloud showing up in southwest - over Wales and moving into Cheshire. Hope it doesn't rush -- outdoor things to do.
  19. iand61 A new life beckoning? "The Pedlar's Caravan" by William Brighty Rands (1823-1882) VICTORIANWEB.ORG
  20. Picked up 39.5 mm this morning at 9GMT for previous 24hrs. That's 65.9 mm so far this month. Land sodden and unmanageable again despite the improvement last week. Outbreaks of light rain all morning . Might be a clearance now. But fax charts suggest the "banana express" will keep coming for a few days. Take your pick -- from the Azores or the Caribbean. Maybe similar to the "pineapple express" whicj brings stormy wet streamers from Hawaii to western US.
