This video believed to be from somewhere in Norfolk today, reminds me of the snow back in the 80,s when I was a kid.

seem to recall drifts like that in parts of north yorkshire on a May bank holiday around 2013 when we had to hire a little motor  for a short break when ours packed in. It was so weird seeing snow and so much of it that late on

Just got back from a shopping excursion and the conditions within the 20min area of my home are stark, my village has had around a good inch of snow yet just two mins away there is a dusting go a further five mins away and thick snow cover again. Just goes to show how the showers have let loose depending on geography and local weather conditions the varied conditions are quite broad even in a tiny area.

we are barely 2m from the city centre on a dead end street with an incline, all small old terraced houses.  Our street typically retains snow and ice when others around us have cleared, so what little snow I am seeing outside my window is probably more than the next street has got.

but it's still trying - a few flakes, here and there

I have similar memories of school remaining open until absolutely necessary to close due to very deep snow and drifts, also in the ‘70’s.

I think one of the big differences between now and then was vast majority of kids were really local and within easy walking distance and it was the same for teachers or at least it was at my junior school.

My daughter is a primary school teacher and the school where she works has lots of the kids travel in by car as they aren’t within walking distance and some of the teachers drive in 30 or 40 miles and one from Manchester!  Therefore even if kids can get to school, they don’t always have the right number of teachers able to get in to meet safety requirements and pupil-teacher ratio

I work at an FE College and it was always the waiting game - we would check what the other colleges were doing - the ones on the outskirts closed first, us in the middle of the city at lower levels had to wait until all the others shut by which time, the roads would be shocking and getting home was a nightmare. Lot to be said for working from home

This really is the best regional page! we have some great posters in here who actually post stuff we can understand it's going to be an exciting few days or maybe longer! hope we all get some snow and look forward to seeing great pictures in the coming days

I second this - very grateful to the posters on here who explain things in ways that make sense to non-meto folk!

We suddnely have a lot of fog here in Sheffield City Centre looking over from the direction of the station towards the SW) can't see all the usual landmarks - Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Bramhall Lane, VelocityTower or even the new construction taking place further up St Mary's Gate/Ecclesall

yeah, last years BftE didn't really deliver for us here, it wasn't that cold and not much snow either.

Consider that in 2010 we hit -20c here, nothing since has come close. Not that I'd want a repeat of that cold, we had all sorts of problems with the vehicles from rubber anti-vibe dampers sheering off propshafts to cracked rads. It also cost us a fortune to heat the house.

...and at the same time in 2010, our heating packed in for several weeks and we were lucky if we reached 8degrees max downstairs indoors brrrrrrrr
