Have to agree that the radar seems to be showing more snow than expected. MetOffice and Beeb seem to have slightly adjusted their forecast but both predict it stopping before 10PM

The bbc forecast at about 7.15 this evening showed snow showers running across the south all night - and into the morning, when they'll be restricted more to the coastal strip.

The only time I remember seeing deep accumulation of snow in Deal. The roads were filled, the hedges and fences were drifts. Being coastal and low-lying we rarely do well from any other kind of set up.

Glad you got a lot. That was fa ab night.  The low was expected to track west across southern england - but it stopped and grew deeper, and chucked out a lot of moderate snowfall all night.

A minor low/trough/wave will zip westwards tonight, most likley along the english channel.  It can be seen [as the "L"]  on the met office pressure chart for midnight tonight.  https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/surface-pressure/#?tab=surfacePressureColour&fcTime=1521374400

Well, what a surprise. Went to bed around 10.15 , with any chance of snow, seemingly vanishing, as ppn boke up south of the river. Felt really tired and didn't have my afternoon nap, yesterday, which I need every day, after suffering a Haemorrhagic Stroke, 2 years ago. Also had row with wife , for that "infernal clicking", of my keyboard!! She had just finished a twelve hour shift and likes to "crash out", in front of the tv, which I can understand. So trudged off to bed, with my tail between my legs.

Think I got up for a bathroom break, around 2, had a quick peek out of the window, to see grass, road and pavements, all covered!! See it was me, that was stopping the snow from arriving south of the river!! Just spent an hour, trawling through all your posts, to ascertain when the snow fell. Looks like it arrived from the S/SE, sometime after midnight and it appears that Lee, SE12, jist caught the eastern edge of it. Many thanks to all of you that stayed up and posted, this really is an informative thread. Special thanks to Nick F and KW, for their superb analysis, of the evolving situation, others too.

Someone posted earlier, that one model gives us more snow chances,, later on today. Perhaps I should promise to come off the computer, if that's the case, later on.

    Regards,

    Tom.  :hi:

A narrow but long finger of snow came up from the channel into one part of west sussex, then expanded and became heavier as it reached up to london, and hung around for quite a while.

I suspect some didn’t really think we’d be looking south for the snow tonight, given the surface wind is still ENE or NEly, but the snow is being driven by winds aloft rather than surface, a look at recent synoptic analysis shows upper low in red dotted lines has circulation and steering flow from the south for SE now the low has moved across the SW

Thanks for that.  I wondered what was going on when I identified* a low of sorts y'day afternoon, centred between london and the sussex coast. It then became centred over London before transferring in a SW-ish direction.  *by looking at the met office radar and going back in time a bit then coming back to the present. That showed  precipitation from the isle of wight to the wash ... moving in an anticlockwise direction.

How far in advance did they predict this one as a possibility

It's all the rage in the model discussion at the moment - or was y'day. It was puicked up a few days ago but seems to have firmed up. First thoughts were we'd we'd get a notherly blast. Now looks like The Beast Mk III.  The first week of April can deliver good snowfalls that lie.

Does anybody have any clue about tomorrow evening, I’m not sure much snow at that point will make much difference if we get the temperatures they say we will on monday

Might belt it down. Met office chart shows a small low zipping west, tomo night. maybe along the channel. Apps are saying snow for tomo night - but i don't use them.

Met office app showing for the first time some snow Sunday night into Monday - I know this app is always wrong as today showed but it’s being noticed maybe

Yes. a shallow low or trough will be zipping west from the east, maybe along the channel. Interesting! It's indentified as a minor low - its has no clearly define centre - in the latest met office pressure charts. Could give a decent dumping.

I think I must be lucky I’m sitting under one of those fingers. Just stuck my head out the door, snowing harder than it has all day but not laying.

Thought you might be under the one east of us. It ought to start lying. The finger over us is getting heavier north of us [and now near us] and still expanding east and westwards. Could merge with yours soon. Could be an interesting night after all..
