Absolutely. We lost many trees during The Great Storm of 87' and it's taken the last 36 years or so to recover much of the foliage lost during that event. Everything crossed for downgrades although I fear we're now inside the 72 hour reliable model timeframe and it's not looking too rosy. Our only saving grace will be if the strongest winds occur from the south west and west as the island's topography provides an element of shelter from these directions.

Well good luck with everything! I sure will be logging into the webcam on St Ouens Thursday just to get a idea of the impact of this storm.

Jersey Met Office Thursday morning forecast makes interesting reading. No doubt a red warning will be issued by them nearer the time followed by a meeting of the department of infrastructure and education. If islanders aren’t advised to stay indoors, I’ll be very surprised ...

Hope my holiday destination every year is not hit hard! All them trees on the green lanes......Lets hope for a downgrade for everyone!

This. People like that absolute bell end Nathan Rao who was (maybe still is) at The Express who print apocolyptic stories about weather every other week or so certainly don't help, especially as a good chunk of older people still regard rags like that and the Daily Mail as reputable publications

He blocked me on twitter that fool!

There is a danger to life crossing a road. These don't work like that.

The "danger to life" phrase used to be saved for reds but it seems to crop up more in recent years. The MO have a set of drop down lists and can chose to add "danger to life" into the warning. All 3 warn of severe weather. People shouldn't be making non-essential journeys. The weather forecast is bad and flooding is likely but you don't tend to see a Red warning until the very worst conditions are imminent (or actually occurring), then no-one should be going out.

Thank you Jo for the reasoning. I won't be crossing any roads anytime soon  Fingers crossed it stays at amber.

There is also this one, which includes private level gauges, and is quite often more up to date than the. Gov one.

GaugeMap is an award winning interactive map with the latest river level, flow and groundwater data from Environment Agency stations in Britain & Ireland.

Thats the one I am using for the River Aire at Apperley Bridge where my mum is. I have been reliably informed by my mate who works for Calderdale Council Flood Risk Dept to make plans for moving things higher by Wednesday as he expects it to flood again and perhaps surpass the 2015 Boxing Day floods!!! Not good news at all im afraid...

And on this side of the Pennines as well.

if the rain amounts being talked about come off I’d imagine many of the records set on Boxing Day 2015 will be under threat.

a worrying time for anyone in a flood prone area and made even worse by all public buildings being out of bounds due to COVID although I imagine that will soon change if evacuations are needed.

Yes my mum has the River Aire running at the back of her garden in Apperley Bridge and ive just had a call from my mate who works for Calderdale Council Flood Risk Management and he quite worryingly said this could be worse than Boxing Day 2015! Start to move things now for her is not something I want to hear......What with shielding from Covid and now this no thanks!!!!

  7. Hello everyone.

I don't post here often but enjoy reading the various posts each with their own insightfulness.

Im due to go to Jersey on the 8th August for 2 weeks and I am very excited by the prospect of the some major heat building up from the 7th. Does Jersey tend to be cooler due to the surrounding Atlantic Ocean?

    Cheers
