Don't know how true it is, but recent discussions on the winter thread are stating about this period of weather is very similar to that of November 2009. If so, does anyone remember what the winter was like, as it seems to be something that people are thinking could be similar this year.

December 2009 was very cold and lots of snow (in Glasgow anyway). Didn't break until mid January

Thought it would be good to do a quick comparison of London versus other cities at a similar latitude in the northern hemisphere, on annual average sunshine hours.

    London: 1,675

    Hamburg: 1,581

    Amsterdam: 1,662

    Berlin: 1,758

    Paris: 1,717

    Warsaw: 1,998

    New York: 2,534

    Toronto: 2,066

    Vancouver: 1,818

New York is at the same latitude as Madrid, not London. Sorry...just happen to know that from a quiz one time 🤐

I've had a few friends and family members visit Santorini etc and they never mentioned any strong winds, and they've all shown me photos of them eating outside, having drink/food on the beach etc.

Not sure if they just got lucky or you got unlucky with the wind situation, who knows.

I'll give you a shout re any recommendations for restuarants etc! I'm not doing Santorini but probably Naxos, Paros, Koufonisia and maybe Milos.

Wind is fine on a hot day, unless it's a freezing cold wind like this N-Sea one we've been having in the South East for weeks!

What time of year did you go there?

Late June to mid July. The wind is good for keeping the heat down, but not so good when trying to eat outside. We used the ferries a lot, big ships not a problem with the wind, but the little one from Folegandros to Santorini was a nightmare 🤢🤢🤢

I'm going to the Cyclades Islands in the middle of June and looks similar, but it's still too far away to be properly accurate.

A couple of showers is fine, but prolonged periods of rain and /or cloud won't be good...seeing as there's very little to do on those islands other than bum around on the beach!

I did an 18 day tour of The Cyclades last year - Paros, Naxos, Santorini, Folegandros. It's the wind that will bother you more than the rain probably. Pretty constant strong winds for the 18days we were there.

Looking wet and miserable for many over the next ten days if the ECM total rainfall chart is anything to go by. Over 70mm for many, but Central England perhaps fairing better.  Summer still to begin for the North West, only 2 decent days so far.

That looks almost perfect for someone heading to the Greek Islands for two weeks on 25th June who is worried his tomato plants in Glasgow may dry out

  7. Another gorgeous day outside. Keep heading out to the garden for an hour at lunchtime and it feels weird that there is still nothing much to do. Tomatoes still seedlings indoors, onions, carrots etc have barely sprouted.

Only thing needing done is watering the strawberries that were overwintered in pots.

All the bees are in for a shock next week!
