  1. Yep, that is why I think people in the mad thread are being silly. For such intelligent people they really do show a serious lack of common sense at times. We are at the end of the weakest solar cycle in 200 years, currently in the deepest solar minimum for 200 years and we won't have climbed up into the next solar maximum for another 4 or 5 years (and even that is forecast to be relatively week too). History shows that winters tend to last later into spring at periods of very low solar minimums. I would therefore suggest we could still have 8-12 weeks of potential winter weather to go. On top of that we have the AMO trending towards negative territory. I would not write winter off yet. My wife grows our own vegetables and will tell you that she lost crops due to snow and ice appearing in April at the time of the last minimum. The good news for summer is that solar minimums can produce long hot dry summers!
  2. Would have thought anybody under this band moving south should get decent snow (it certainly delivered for us), it is nearly at Lincoln now but that leading edge was over us (the little red circle north of Brigg) at 7am. It has delivered 3/4" now. Looks like we are near the end of it now, a big gap until the next potential band hits.
  3. I've given up with the mad thread for now, it even got into an argument over earthquakes and volcanoes last night! barely any model talk in there.
  4. still snowing here, we are under that long thin band of snow stretching from Scunthorpe up past Beverly that is moving almost due south. The leading edge hit us 2 hours ago and is still delivering.
  5. blimey, went to make a coffee and have a fag and it is snowing heavily now, proper large flakes and already 1/2" cover on ground in just a few minutes!
  6. Morning, it is all white here, we only had 1/4" snow fall overnight but the village looks very wintery and still some light flakes coming down now. Temp is now +0.5c and patches of blue sky appearing so it may not last long but a lovely scene to wake up to .
  7. Not sure the weather type is that accurate on the radar, was showing pink earlier when we had rain/sleet and now showing green when it is now snowing!?*
  8. I wouldn't give up hope just yet, the attached picture is from 26th March 2013, we got 8-10" of snow here and it stayed on the ground for a couple of days. We still have a fair bit of winter left to run yet I guess you are just too far inland to have got much from last weeks snow event? We got 4" last week taking us up to 6 days of laying snow here this winter. I think we are in a sweet spot, on the southern edge of the humber bank (north wolds). While not exactly a high hill, the humber bank tends to attract the snow from the streamers coming down the humber I think this is the 7th winter in last 10 we've had decent snowfall for at least a couple of days.
  9. yeah, that's the stuff. We are at quite a low elevation though and from reading that link it says is more common at higher elevations. Not even that cold here, +1.1c at the moment although it is falling. Not seen graupel here that often, we normally get either proper snow or just sleet.
  10. Thing is, it really is like polystyrene balls! Not like the proper snowflakes we had last week (wet, heavy and from the west). These are dry, light and from the east. Think I preferred the wet snow as it built up faster and deeper (although our poor gazebo would argue otherwise after it collapsed under the weight after I forgot to fold the cover back)
  11. heavy shower of 'polystyrene balls' falling here, garden turned white already.
  12. That quattro was still spinning up even on winter tyres and the main road was virtually clear of snow. I'd like to see him do a few miles in proper deep snow (6-12"), would likely build up under the sump guard and he'd lose traction. If you want the right car with the right tyres for snow then you need our old Land Rover on snow tyres That was 8-12" deep back in 2010 on our main road. The clearance under the front diff is 11". Tyres are 33" diameter.
  13. Been a good morning for winter weather here, half a dozen winter showers, one being heavy snow with big flakes that stuck nicely for a while. The rest have been sleet/light snow. In between we've had blue sky and temp is now up to +3.4c but still a bit of laying snow in the shade. If the showers continue this evening we might have some chance of them sticking as I expect temps to drop to near freezing this evening.
  14. Now up to a heady +1.7c here, most of the snow from last night starting to melt - tarmac roads and paths are clear already. Still a very nice wintery feel to the village with lawns, trees and roofs still white
  15. Breeze now coming in from the east, temp has gone shooting up to 0.5c from -1.2c an hour ago. However it is snowing here, small stuff but nice layer over whole garden now. Pleasant surprise as was not expecting anything.
  16. fog has remained all day here, temps rose to +0.3c at 2pm but only lasted an hour, now back down to -0.6c at 4pm. Frost has remained largely intact all day. Very wintry feeling outside in the garden
  17. We actually have a solid fuelled Rayburn which does all our central heating, cooking, hot water, clothes drying and kettle boiling so it is basically 'off grid' and immune to power cuts. It is basically just a large cast iron oven with a firebox so very little to go wrong - no electrics or electronics! Back in 2010 our village had no power for 3 days during that cold spell and we had to cook meals and provide hot drinks to our elderly neighbours as their gas boilers wouldn't work with no electric. It was quite nice really, got to know neighbours that we'd hardly spoke to before despite living here for years, now we chat all the time. We also took them into town or collected groceries for them in the Land Rovers because all our rural roads were deep in snow and ice. I guess it was a similar feeling/spirit to what people did during the war - pull together as a community. Anyway, temp has now reached zero but fog is still here and the frost still deep on every surface. Looks like it could last whole day if this fog doesn't shift.
  18. yeah, last years BftE didn't really deliver for us here, it wasn't that cold and not much snow either. Consider that in 2010 we hit -20c here, nothing since has come close. Not that I'd want a repeat of that cold, we had all sorts of problems with the vehicles from rubber anti-vibe dampers sheering off propshafts to cracked rads. It also cost us a fortune to heat the house.
  19. thought it had snowed when I first looked out of window this morning, really heavy frost, currently -3.1c outside and foggy.
  20. Well, my wife comes from the North Riding and my eldest daughter lives in Hull so can I claim honorary membership of this thread? In way of supporting evidence I offer this, my Land Rover carries the Lincolnshire flag on its bonnet but my wifes Land Rover has the North Riding flag...
  21. snap, -2.1c here too Not quite coldest for us, we hit -4c last week and -2.8c early this morning. Oddly doesn't feel that cold outside, possibly due to lack of wind.
  22. Have I been posting in the wrong thread? I'm a few miles north of Brigg in North Lincolnshire (previously part of Humberside). The Lincolnshire thread seems to mainly cater for those much further south in the county. I have seen quite a few posts in this thread (before it was renamed) from Scunthorpe etc which are closer to me than Boston etc. I guess it may explain why I seemed to be in a minority that had decent snow last week and been experiencing damned cold days for last few weeks. I did wonder why everybody was complaining about lack of cold and snow!
  23. Yeah, frost has lasted all day in shade, been damned cold here today, think max it got to today was +2c and that was brief! Down to -1c here now.
