  1. No snow here in North Lincs last night however it rained until late yesterday and then overnight the temp dropped to -3c (still -1.8c now), the result is seriously icy roads, very slippy out there! We had 2" of snow on the ground for two days last week and had a light covering a couple of times over last two months so can't really complain too much, better than many winters of late but I'm still very optimistic and expect a couple more snow days before this winter is out.
  2. +9c here at the moment, quite a stark contrast to 2-3 days ago when it was -2c this time of the evening! The snow has finally all gone from the lawn this afternoon, it did manage to stay for 48 hours so it has felt quite nice and wintry here last few days.
  3. We have now hit -3c, not coldest temp of the winter but pretty certain it is the coldest at 9pm this winter! Judging from number of people saying they got no snow then we must have been really lucky here, with a total of 3" last night. Oddly, we are not even at a high elevation!! we are not much above sea level in North Lincs (albeit at the foot of the humber bank) As somebody else mentioned yesterday, we actually got more snow in one hour yesterday from a NW'ly than we did in the entire jan-apr 2018 'Beast From The East' period. Not only that, due to much lower temps this time, the snow has remained largely intact for a full 24 hours whereas back in winter 2018 it often melted within a few hours. Weather in the UK is amazingly localised, even a few hundred yards making such a huge difference to what people get.
  4. Yeah, we were at -1.9c at 6pm (in the sticks, a few miles north of Brigg) We still have most of the snow from last night. Despite blue sky and sun out most of the day the snow refused to melt. Lawn is still 2" deep. Roads were slushy at 4pm when I picked up my wife from work but that is rapidly freezing so tomorrow morning will be fun even if we get no more snow tonight. I reckon temps will hit -4c here tonight, maybe a little lower. Coldest since last winter (or should I say last spring )
  5. Only got down to -2c here but that was cold enough to allow most of the snow from last night to remain on the ground. Roads were like ice sheets this morning as the partial melt last night had refrozen. The wifes Land Rover had no problems with it though.
  6. Snow now stopped completely, we still got a nice covering. The new LED streetlamp outside our house is useless, not as warm or cheery as the old lamp and not entirely convinced they give better light. The kids, who have the front bedrooms, have complained that they can't sleep due to intrusive bright light. I also find them too bright for driving, very distracting. Preferred the old yellow lamps myself.
  7. we are now up to 2" deep across back garden but snow has virtually stopped, heavy snow only lasted 40 mins. Mind you, it is still lovely to see and kids are really excited. Outside temp dropped to +1c so chance of this sticking through the night if temp drops a little further.
  8. Heavy snow here, near barnetby top in North Lincs. An inch in last 20 mins. Didn't think it would stick as ground was very wet and outside temp was +2.6c!!! Flakes are huge though and has built up a good thickness very quickly.
  9. Was quite windy here last night, kept me awake. Must have sounded worse than it was though because our gazebo still standing this morning albeit with a little tear on a seam that I have just patched. Not much rain here overnight but it rained heavily most of yesterday afternoon and evening.
  10. We've had rain almost every day this month so far. We are a few miles north of Brigg in North Lincs. It has been torrential at times over several days this week including today. Amazing the difference only 50 miles makes!
  11. yeah, for us we rate a year as warm or cool based on the number of months we can go without the rayburn running. 2003 and 2011 both rate higher than this year because we ran without heating from April to November in those years. This year may have had very hot couple of months but we had a long winter which meant it was mid May before heating went off and now facing putting heating on a month early. I hope we are not in for another cold winter, I love snow but not so keen on winter when the cold stretches over too long a period!
  12. A very nippy morning here in North Lincs, house is now getting uncomfortably cool. Will need to get rayburn running this weekend to get some warmth, a little early compared to previous years. Normally we can last till October before lighting it but we've had a pretty average August with cool temps and alot of rain and September so far has not been warm either. Could do with a couple of weeks of warm sunshine now.
  13. Been an odd week for weather. Quite muggy last couple of days but very cloudy here most days. First half of week was very pleasant with temps upto 25c, fresher air and a cool breeze. It did get upto 28.6c here yesterday but under alot of grey cloud, even had a 10 minute rain shower early evening. Garden is looking much healthier after last weekends rain. Our hedge seems to have put on alot of foliage this week and the lawn is not only back to green but now needs mowing!
  14. You've had 6 weeks of warm dry weather, surely better than a normal UK summer? Anybody with a garden or specifically a veg garden is very grateful for this rain. I'm sure the farmers are happy too. Another month of drought would have surely led to significant crop failures and subsequent supply issues, excessive imports and increased food costs to consumers so the rain is very welcome. Anyway, the dry spell was bound to break eventually and be replaced with rain especially after the media made such a song and dance about water shortages and hosepipe bans. The kids have also just broken up for summer hols and as any parent knows, planning days out becomes much more tedious and troublesome with variable weather. You could almost guarantee it would rain soon after the start of their hols. I also wouldn't be surprised if somebody in government was planning to announce a 'minister of drought', guaranteed to bring rain................
  15. Another day of glorious rain today. Rained heavily most of the morning and then light rain until about an hour ago. It has also been quite windy today although we have had no further thunderstorms. Max temp today was 20c Lawn is now mostly green again and my wife's veg garden is looking much healthier. The beans and squash seemed to have doubled their growth in just a few days. We might yet have a decent crop. (sadly the tomatoes suffered badly from high winds and we have lost a few of them)
  16. Much cooler today, max 23.3c and already down to 14.7c here now, may get lower later. Cool enough for a decent sleep A welcome change from the heat of late. Rain finally stopped here at lunchtime after delivering 40mm over last 3 days. The spring fed well is up four feet already, nearly back to normal summer depth.
  17. It is still raining here! Been on and off all night. The lawn is now 50% green again
  18. True, although this week we've seen a steady decline in daytime highs. Started the week with a high of 34c, by Wednesday it was just 32c and today just 30c. Night time temps have followed a similar trend. We'll see how it goes next week but at this rate we'll be back to normal summer temps by mid week here. We are pretty rural location so don't suffer UHI effect. I thought the models were also showing cooler temps next week too?
  19. Snap! We have almost identical temps and drop to yours.
  20. Still raining here, that is now a full 2 hours of moderate to torrential rain tonight on top of a few hours of heavy rain last night. While it is great to have the rain for the garden, I fear this may be the start of a gradual breakdown of the heatwave. My gut feeling is that we may return to normal UK summer weather within a couple of weeks (eg. wet). We are just a week into the kids summer hols. My wife and I had hoped the warm weather would last out the entire summer hols.
  21. Thanks Mike, I haven't noticed it behave so erratically before, mind you we haven't had a decent thunderstorm for years.
  22. It is still raining here, albeit only moderately heavy. However I think by the end of the night it'll have taken our rainfall to about 30mm in 2 days, the garden is heaving a huge sigh of relief Pressure seems to be up and down like a yoyo at the moment, not sure if w/s is playing up. Had dropped to 1000mb at start of storm then back to 1003, then back down again. Quite a drop from 2 days ago when it was showing 1018mb.
  23. Pretty much finished here now. It lasted about an hour. If you get the dark sky and wind then about 20 mins later you should get some heavy rain if it follows the same pattern as here. Mind you, we are on the southern slope of the low hill (Humber bank/northern wolds) which might make us more prone to getting the rain from weather systems.
  24. Haha, yes, we have them in some pictures too! Little buggers get everywhere. I'm surprised you've had little rain, we are only a couple of miles north of Brigg, about 10 miles from you? It has been torrential here for last 20 mins. Surface water drains are at capacity and surface water now forming torrents running down road. This has been the best thunderstorm we've experienced in years, maybe decades. I swear no exaggeration when I say we've seen hundreds of lightning flashes, probably a hundred a minute, almost like somebody holding a flickering lightbulb above the clouds. The sky is pitch black, the wind is really strong and bending the trees over and the noise of the thunder is just awesome. I was just standing under the (nearly blown away) gazebo enjoying being out in it, it makes you appreciate the power of mother nature!
