  1. On looking at photos photos of harvest am struck by how all the plants have senaced very early this year from peas in the garden to bracken( no keen frost to date) to the leaves on the trees including larch needles to the barley stems (straw) which has boken up into tiny pieces in the combine as it was so dead ripe. The autumn colours are well and truly here.Maybe the snow won"t be long either! A sunny start to the day with a heavy dew and currently 9c
  2. Yes a cracking harvest day dry, low humidity, with almost clear blue skies and a breeze this evening allowing the combine to keep going, no dew so far. There is even dust Yippee!!!
  3. A nice autumnal start to the day at 5c with some sunny intervels. Just hope the afternoon showers stay away and the combines roll again.
  4. Welll another tropical afternoon as a shower arrived just as I was half way through baling a field. It seems to rain every afternoon mostly after a good drying morning. Currently overcast dry and 15c.
  5. Well another local forcast to bin supposed to be dry afternoon.Combines in area started about 1.00pm and all got rained off at 3.00pm. This is turning into a very catchy harvest.
  6. Sun is shining with a blue sky and fresh wind.Grain is very soft so will be tomorrow before its dry enough to cut again. Currently 20c
  7. A lot of conifers are showing signs of yellowing needles as well..Could this all go back to the very dry winter ,spring and early summer to mid July and be the result of earlier drought conditions
  8. The very same thing is happening here almost a month ahead of normal. Just put a comment on the Scottish thread earlier. Daylight response with lots of spring, early summer sunshine ?or something more unusual like rising background CO2 levels forcing the trees to grow too fast.?
  9. Just the same here with a few patches of blue sky now .Currently 17c. Very Autumnal looking this morning with the fog and drizzle and nearly all the leaves on the trees turning fast .Seems very early is the good weather in spring the reason?
  10. Spot on forecast for today WET!!!! Combines forlornly parked up in half cut fields. Can"t wait for autumn to start maybe it will be less humid with a few dry days in a row occasionaly. Currently raining calm and 17c
  11. Finally got a heavy shower about an hour later with a further heavy burst about two hours ago.About one third of field baled mostly the hardest areas to dry again round the outside and next to a wood so thats the positive. Should dry quickly again in the right conditions.Sunday onwards looks better with a breeze which should aid drying if there are not too many showers.Calm, damp and currently 16.5c.
  12. Line of showers on either side of us now, so far we are in the dry slot and round baler working in straw.
  13. Last night forecast for my area was dry, at 6.00 am this morning it was very showery from midday and now for the afternoon it is dry. Good job ignored the early morning one and turned some of the straw this morning. Grr!!!! Nowcasting is the thing to do although there are some shower clouds developing now. Warm at 19c
  14. A damp slightly showery start to the day but dried and warmed up ( 22c) this afternoon with a fresh breeze which allowed us to bale straw from last week and snatch another field this evening. with two combines before the forecast thundery rain for tomorrow. I agree with Hairy Celt the short term 24 Hour forecasts have not been very accurate this summer
  15. One for Hairy Celt. https://twitter.com/search?q=dog biscuits weather&src=typd&lang=en Have seen this on few farmers twiitter feeds as this very changeable weather is starting to cause real harvesting problems A dull dry humid day here and grass remained wet all day.
  16. A few sharp showers today but some bright intervels. During these it was very noticeable that the trees are getting their autumn hues.
  17. Probably the last photo this season of the sunset to the north last night about 10.30pm.Managed to finish cutting second field at the same time. So when we got some torrential rain at 10.00am this morning felt we achieved something. Currently dull humid dry and 15c. No more harvesting for quite a few days if forecasts are correct.
  18. A more modern variety of barley being cut here which can be ripe with the head still vertical and not hanging down. Still cutting as combine had several breakdowns earlier. Has passed the tests for quality so pleased about that.
  19. 21 c here this afternoon for a while with a fresh breeze. Started harvest 2017 and combine now broken down, a second one on its way as very few have started spring sown crop. Perhaps taking it a couple of days early but had it tested this afternoon and its fine for quality so if other combine is OK will try to get another field this evening. Bad forecast for tomorrow is pushing us to get some under cover. Will put a photo up tonight .
  20. .Snatched a good batch of hay today in spite of some big drops of rain. The strong warm south wind (no sunshine) really made it after an almost dry day yesterday.Young Mr. Northernlights just has two more bundles to take in so should be finished before it is totally dark. A very satisfying day. Currently dull 15.5c and breezy.
  21. Give the farmer a chance to harvest the crops in your photos especially with at least a shower every day. However even I feel the high hills will see snow before the end of September given how cool it is now.
  22. More showers this afternoon so hay still on hold .Accuracy of 24 hour local forecasts has been very poor this last month. Today was forecast to be dry all day yesterday and then changed to showers this morning. I suppose with being low pressure dominated this last month showers can spring up at almost anytime.
  23. Same here so started turning a batch of hay coming along nicely in sun and wind and then a heavy shower stopped play the story of the last four weeks trying to make hay. Seems the hay season is getting later and later as the years go by..
  24. Keep the winds down there my P.H.T. is bad enough with the barley nearly ripe and fairly showery weather forecast its not ripening fast. Cleaning sheds today for the grain and having problems with the water suupply from the well but seems to have rectified itself tonight .Currently 12c and cloudy.
  25. A summer etched on my memory when we still had half the barley to cut on the 11th of October (normally mid August to mid September). Eventually said to my last employee who had been a milk roundman for a time we should start combining at 3.00am as every night seemed to be dry and windy.and the rain arrived about 9.00am. Did this for a couple of nights and slept during the day. After a week of odd nights doing this we noticed some of our neighbours doing the same. The straw that needed baling for cattle bedding never dried properly was baled on a dull breezy day late in October. This then turned mouldy and we had to wear masks all winter to bed the cattle. The very wet grain took three months to dry on an old on the floor dryer (now a member of a Coop with five dryers driing up to 800 tonnes a day) and could not be sold till Christmas. Was speaking to a local contractor today and were just saying how large machinery has become and the speed we can do and cover so much in a day and in spite of this the weather still puts us under pressure and we wondered how we ever coped 40 years ago.The weather must have kinder then!!!
