  1. A lot of conflict on some pages see how much summers can vary in areas. What summers would you say have gotten a bad press but you have found decent. For me summers that have stuck out has getting slated but I have found good are.

2000: Especially the July that year. It was one of the driest months I can remember and it was quite sunny especially in the second half. Let down by the temperature in the first 10 days. I was very young back then but can remember plenty days in July/August in the garden having BBQ’s constantly. Can’t remember anything from the June that year however.

2005: Maybe not a summer that is famous for being pretty awful but it was definitely one of the best I can remember. Another very dry summer in my area and warm. Some great thunderstorms in June and the July that followed was virtually rainless, 30.C reached on the 12th and July had plenty of warm weather, although with some cooler days however and the August that followed was good.

2009: Probably the one I’ll get slated for being a decent summer but I found it good, June had some very warm and settled weather especially in the first couple of days and last week. July although extremely wet was warm, especially in the first week. The rain that fell was often in very heavy afternoon/evening showers or thunderstorms and it the rain very rarely lasted longer than a hour it wasn’t also rather sunny. Only thing that let it down was a poor august.

2010: The June that year was almost on a par with 2018 which got it off to a cracking start. The July was rather disappointing but it wasn’t dull at least and there was still a few good days thrown in. August was good that year if rather cool especially at night but I remember plenty of sunny weather that summer.

Be interesting to compare and see everyone’s else’s opinions.

  2. What a excellent topic. For me in Perth, Scotland

2018: Without a doubt the best summer I have witnessed I would even rate it better than 2006 especially after how good May was. The first 10 days of June were terrific low-mid 20’s by day and the nights were cool, mid range single figures there was a brief spell in the middle of June where it was a bit unsettled and cooler but the final week more than made up for it. Very hot even by my standards the maximum reached 31.C on the 28th. July continued that very warm and sunny theme for the first half although it turned a bit more unsettled in the second half with occasional thunderstorms but it still remained very warm and we just missed out on reaching 30.C again. August was a little bit disappointing after the first week but it wasn’t overly bad at all.

2013: June was a pleasant month even though temperatures and sunshine were bang average and there wasn’t any hot days we only had half the amount of rainfall and temperatures were never overly cool a lot of 16.C-19.C days. I think it felt warmer because of how cool the spring was that year. July was phenomenal that year with plenty hot, sunny weather 31.C was also reached that month and there was virtually no rain until the final week. August while quite dull was extremely dry only 30% of average and like June there was no hot days but 20.C was reached on half the days.

2019: Quite an unusual summer in the sense it was very warm but also very wet. June was pretty disappointing in the first half with a lot of cool and wet weather but the second half improved greatly with plenty of pleasantly warm sunshine and little rain. July although dull and wet was remarkably warm and very humid the period 22nd-26th July I don’t think I can recall a period where it has been that humid reaching 28.C and falling to just 19.C. August was extremely wet but it it was never cool aside from a couple of days in the second week and it was the sunniest since 2003.

2014: June was a warm month but was unsettled and wet. There was a good warm, sunny spell midmonth but aside from that there wasn’t much sunshine. July was virtually on par with 2013 and it was actually sunnier but the August that followed was awful, cool, wet and windy with little warmth.

2016: Got off to a fantastic start the first week of June was virtually unbroken warm sunshine before a thundery second week but the second half was very poor, cool, wet and extremely dull although very warm by night. July was pretty cool and unsettled for the vast majority of the month but there was a good warm spell in the third week and the thunderstorm on the 20th will stick out for a long time. August continued that unsettled theme but after the first half it improved massively and was virtually rainless after midmonth.

2017: June was extremely wet, dull and annoying cool by day but unusually mild at night. Even when there was the heatwave we missed out, aside from the 17th and 18th where it reached 25.C and 23.C respectively after that it cooled down once again. July was much the same for the first 10 days and I think it was either the 8th or 9th where it rained relentlessly, was windy and reached barely 14.C. The next 10 days were a improvement but the final week was more unsettled and the August that followed was truly awful, it felt like October most of the time and the maximum exceeded 20.C on only 4 days.

2015: A June which dry was often cool, dull and windy. July that year was an absolute write off it was extremely wet, windy and felt like late October a lot of the time. Which was a shame as the first few days were quite pleasant. August was unsettled but at least it was quite sunny.

    Quite warm, dry and sunny.

May was overall quite a warm month by day with nights being slightly below average. Much of the first half was quite cool with the occasional warm day before a northerly blast bringing he Coldest May temperature in my area for at least 25 years before warming up in the second with the closing days being especially warm. Rainfall was below average although not exceptionally so despite only four rain days with half falling on one. Sunshine was also above average.

  4. I think 1998 was quite a different summer depending on where you were as the north seemed to fare off a lot worse than the south particularly in August. Although September was very warm that year I think.

1999 was pretty cool in the first half of June but the second half and July were warm. July was also very dry that year I’m sure. August was average.

2001 had a excellent May but the summer was quite poor from what I can recall. June and July were quite wet and June was notably cool. August was bang average.

Suppose different depending on where you live. I have good memories of summer 2009 yes it was very wet but it was rarely cool and the rain fell in massive downpours. We had a couple of flash floods but there wasn’t many dull, wet and cool days.

  5. Be interesting to read everyone’s memories of June over the past 10/15 years or so since lockdown is getting to me.

2019: Not actually a bad month in my area, the second half was rather pleasant with sunny days and pleasantly warm temperatures, we only had one day of rain after the 17th (29th) nice end after a disappointing first half.

2018: Phenomenal month, warm, dry and sunny for the vast majority aside from a few days midmonth (11th-17th) a fantastic hail storm on the 9th with foam forming on the A9 making it look like lying snow. Last few days were fantastic. 31.C reached on the 28th.

2017: Very wet and dull although warm. Most annoying that the warmth was at night whereas maximum temperatures were around average. We missed out on the heatwave midmonth although we did manage 25.C.

2016: Similar to 2017 although not quite as wet, it actually started very nice with lots of warm sunshine in the first week, some good thunderstorms in the second week although after that it was mostly cool and wet.

2015: Cool, dry and dry dull pretty poor for the most part aside from a few days in the second week and the last week where it did get noticeably warmer.

2014: Another dull and wet month although very warm, nighttime temperatures were again especially high although unlike 2016, 2017 there was a few sunny and hot days spread out throughout the month.

2013: Quite unusual for June it was rather dry although temperatures and sunshine were exactly average, no warm days I didn’t exceed 23.C all month but there was plenty hazy sunshine throughout and there was no spells of cool weather many days stayed within a 16.C-20.C bracket. Although it was pretty windy.

2012: Abysmal month 20.C was only reached once, just persistent dull and wet weather throughout.

2011: A great first and last few days were sandwiched between a cool and wet majority of month. Some notable downpours and surprisingly chilly nights at times.

2010: Very good month although it took a rather long time to get going some fantastic weather just after midmonth and plenty of days above 20.C.

2009: A excellent first few days final week were again sandwiched by a rather unsettled two weeks between them although it stayed quite mild.

2008: Very unsettled although the month turned out exactly average. Never the same weather for 2/3 days in a row.

2007: Exceptionally dull very wet but it was rather warm especially in the first half. Very cool and wet in the second half.

2006: Similar to 2010 but was warm throughout.

share your memories over the last few years or any June’s that have stayed in your long term memory.

21c is ok in June, but 21c in July or August almost always means cloudy and wet (being 2-3c below average). Even 22c in July or August would be considered rather poor here, unless the month was significantly sunnier than average.

I would be happy with 21.C/22.C regularly in the summer. I’m in one of the very few areas in Scotland where maximum temperatures in July reach 20.C on average. I’m lucky to maybe reach 24.C on average about 7/8 times a year.

  7. Perth, Scotland

    Mild, dry and sunny

This was the fourth driest April recorded with 2007, 2011 and 2017 being all drier. It was also the mildest April since 2014 and sunniest since 2015. The month was consistently warmer than average by day and cooler at night with no exceptional temperatures. Warmest weather occurred in the fourth week.

  8. 2019 - Cool and wet for the most part. A maximum of just 6.C on the 8th. Saved by a warm sunny spell midmonth with temperatures getting up to 23.C

2018 - Amazing month, very warm by day but nights were quite cool making it very pleasant, the first couple of days were quite cold from what I can remember however. 26.C was reached on the 28th.

2017 - Another very good May very pleasantly warm in the first half around 17.C-20.C with lots of sunshine. Unsettled for a time in the middle of the month. Record high of 27.9.C on the 26th and a minimum of just 17.4.C the next night. Thundery breakdown.

2016 - Unsettled and cool first week, warm and sunny in the second and last weeks, unsettled spell in the third week. Although it was rather warm expect for the first week.

2015 - Abysmal, very cool and unsettled aside from a few days midmonth very wet at time as well didn’t exceed 18.C all month which is pathetic. Sunshine believe it or not was above average.

2014 - Dull and wet but quite warm especially at night not much in the way of sunshine at all until the final week.

2013 - Very cool for the most part but some warm days sporadically thrown in quite a thundery month as well.

2012 - Unbelievably cold and wet first half, I can remember trees turning to autumn colours after the unbelievable warm and sunny March most trees in my area were in full leaf by the middle of April but afternoon the persistent dullness of April and early May they’d went autumnal. It was saved by a very warm and sunny spell.

2011 - Wet but generally mild and sunny, a very showery month. Severe wind storm on the 23rd.

2010 - Dry and very sunny quite cool in the first half but the second half was very warm. Warmest day of the year was reached on the 22nd.

2009 - Sunny but unsettled warm in the final week.

  9. After a very wet winter and quite a dry spring so far, I reckon Summer 2020 will be quite similar to the likes of 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2019 in the sense of being unsettled and some areas faring off far better than others. I think overall it will be a dry summer in a line north of the Manchester but very wet in the south. Northern and eastern areas will have a very sunny summer whereas it will be a dull summer in the south and extremely dull in the south west. However all areas to be warmer than average.

June: Generally warmer than average, very wet in the south but sunny everywhere, to be rather cool and wet in all areas in the first week before becoming more settled but very cool especially at night with some ground frost even in the south before becoming warm/hot and sunny in all areas but with some big thunderstorms in the south.

Warmest temperatures: 31.7.C (England), 30.2.C (Wales), 27.4.C (Scotland), 26.2.C (Northern Ireland)

Wettest area: South East England, Driest Area: Northern Ireland

Sunniest Area: North-East England, Dullest Area: South West England

July: A warm month everywhere, for Scotland one of the driest and sunniest on record. However one of the dullest on record in the south although many places to be drier than average, a heatwave in the middle of the month bringing temperatures of 30.C+ in northern areas and to 35.C+ in the south before a thundery breakdown. A wet, cool final week in the south but dry and warm further north with sunshine only in eastern areas.

Warmest temperatures: 36.3.C (England), 33.8.C (Wales) 32.6.C (Scotland) 29.7.C (Northern Ireland)

Coldest temperatures: England: 5.7.C, Wales: 3.2.C, Scotland: 1.8.C, Northern Ireland: 3.6.C

Wettest area: Midlands, Driest area: Eastern Scotland

Sunniest Area: Eastern Scotland, Dullest Area: South Coast

August: Sunny and dry in the east and north but wet and dull in the south and west. A very cyclonic month in the south west and also cool but with eastern areas faring better. Nowhere will exceed 30.C until the last couple of days. Close to average temperatures everywhere.

Warmest temperatures: England: 31.3.C, Wales: 26.8.C, Scotland: 27.9.C, Northern Ireland: 27.3.C

Coldest temperatures: England: 3.8.C, Wales: 4.8.C, Scotland: 0.3.C, Northern Ireland: 2.2.C

  10. February 2020: For Perth, Scotland

Exceptionally wet, wettest recorded month also rather mild

This was by far the wettest February in my 26 year record by far beating the February of 2002 by almost 100mm!! Also the amount of rain days was at at its highest as well. Even more shocking is that it beat the December of 2015 with its Rainfall. The month was also quite mild although there was a few colder days towards the end of the month. It was  quite snowy month as well although snowfalls were very short lived. Despite the rain it was quite a sunny month.

Overall a very average month with temperatures, rainfall and sunshine almost all bang on average. A rather cool first 10 days was balanced out by a rather warm spell just after midmonth while the end of the month bar the last day was generally mild although cool at night. Most of the rain fell in the second half while the first half was rather dry. The warmest day was the warmest in the second half of September since 2011.

  12. Perth, Scotland

For me it was a decent summer. Probably on par with the likes of 1997, 1999, 2005, 2009 and 2014. Not as good as 1995, 2003, 2006, 2013 and 2018 but not as bad as 2002, 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2015. It took a while to get going. Most of June was pretty dismal in the first half although the last 10 days were very pleasant with it not getting too hot and with  plenty of sunshine. June overall was slightly cooler and sunnier than average with rainfall about average. July continued quite unsettled but there was a fine spell in the second week with a bit of a thundery breakdown and the second half while being beautiful weather wise was at times unbearably humid. We had temperatures close to 20.C overnight on two occasions which has never happened before. Was quite surprised it ended up slightly duller than average however. August was very nice in the first and last weeks but very wet inbetween expected it to be a wet month but not quite as wetter as overall figures suggested. Though I would say August was probably the best since about 2005/2006.

I would rate the summer overall as a 7/10 not as good as summer 2018 but a lot better than some recent summers.

  13. Perth, Scotland

    Very wet but warm

August 2019 continued the theme of recent August’s being very unsettled. Although being the warmest August since 2004. It was also the wettest since 2008 and third wettest on record with 2004 being the wettest. The month began on a warm and fairly settled note before some torrential rain in the second week with thunder and lighting. The middle third was generally rather cool and wet while it was very warm around the start of the last week. Before much cooler in the closing days.

  14. I was quite surprised throughout July as how warm it was late on in the evenings. My area didn’t record any record breaking heat during the day but it was exceptionally warm at night.

23rd: The maximum was 26.1.C which isn’t anywhere near the record but it wasn’t recorded until at 7:20pm at night where as the noon reading was 24.0.C and 3pm was 25.2.C. The 10pm reading wasn’t 24.3.C, midnight was 20.8.C before falling to 17.5.C at 5am.

25th: A high of 21.7.C was measured at midnight and the low fell to just 18.6.C at 5:30am it was still 20.C at 2am. Before rising to 22.6.C at 7:30am and 24.6.C at 10am.

I believe the highest July minimum in my area before hand was around 17.C in 2006.

A rather warm but largely unsettled month. The first week was rather cool but the vast majority of the month was dominated with warm or very warm spells. The month’s mean minimum temperature was the highest for at least 25 years in my area. With a new record smashed for the warmest July night. And some amazing temperatures throughout. A very humid month as well. Despite the temperatures it was duller and wetter than average.

    Notable moments

The minimum overnight 25th/26th was just 18.6.C which is a July record and the warmest night since August 2004.

The minimum overnight 7th/8th of 6.7.C was the lowest since 2011.

A reading of 24.3.C at 10pm on the 23rd is the highest of so late in the day on record.

A reading of 22.6.C at 7:30am on the 26th is the highest temperature for this early on record.

  16. I’d like to see a rather warm and sunny September but with some big thunderstorms at times. October to have some wet weather at the start but then very sunny afterwards with a brief heatwave and then the first frosts in the last week. November to begin quite cold and frosty but then become very wet and windy

  17. I’d say June 2019 was disappointing but not exceptionally so. It wasn’t anywhere near as bad as 2007 or 2012. The first three weeks were poor nonetheless but was saved by quite a nice last week. In my records since 1994 June’s of it was the joint sixth with 2015 coldest behind 2012, 1998, 2011, 2001 and 1999 . Eighth wettest behind 2017, 2007, 2012, 2016, 2002, 1998 and 1997. But the fifth sunniest behind 2006, 2018, 2010 and 2003. So it wasn’t in any way a record breaking month. The unsettled theme was always a notable feature in the first three weeks. We didn’t have many days with prolonged rainfall or lots of dull weather but a lot of days that started off poorly but then turned out into a decent afternoon. Only the last week seen any settled weather.

The first three days of July have been almost completely sunny and rather warm just a tad windy at times so fingers crossed for a decent July, no rain either :).

A month that ended up slightly cooler, wetter although sunnier than average. The first three weeks brought largely cool and rather showery weather with some notably cool days at times the last week was much warmer with lots of sunshine and only a sharp thunderstorm on the 29th brought any significant rainfall. Despite the cool, unsettled theme for the majority of the month sunshine totals were actually above normal and it was the second sunniest June since 2010 with only 2018 being sunnier. Overall this was the joint coolest June with 2015 since 2012. Also the lowest minimum temperature was also the lowest in June in my records.

  19. The complete lack of warmth has been notable the warmest it’s been all month is just short of 19.C, even June 2012 exceeded 20.C but still time for that to happen. I would say it has been pretty wet but I don’t think it’s been overly dull, we’ve had some quite good spells of sunshine in between showers, I have nearly broken my June lowest maximum though on the 13th it reached just 11.3.C which is just short of my record of 11.1.C on the 14th June 2012. In need of a spell of prolonged settled weather now though.

  21. This was the coolest and wettest May since 2015 and dullest since 2014. The first 10 days were cold, wet and dull with some very low daytime maxima including my lowest maximum in May in the last 25 years. The period 11th-18th was a lot warmer, drier and sunnier under high pressure south easterly winds before the last 10 days were more unsettled though not especially cold. This was also the first May to include snowfall with sleet showers falling on the 4th and the 8th.

  22. Perth Scotland

An unsettled month for the first three weeks followed by a dry, sunny and warm spell in the last week. The month was overall rather mild but was cold at times especially in the middle of the month. The month began rather wet and stormy especially in the first week it remained cool though with some milder days and showers. There was a brief but noticeable cold snap in the middle which brought some snow before pressure rose and the last week had some beautiful Spring sunshine.

  24. Perth Scotland

A very mild month after a very cold start mainly down to the very high maxima with minima being only a little above average. It was the mildest February since 1998, and the driest since 2012. The February maximum was the highest on record and the minimum was also the lowest since 2010. This is by far the driest and sunniest winter in my records.
