  1. Our experience as it passed through here earlier. You needed to be 200m+ and at least 10km from the coast to avoid rain. Obviously, it's going to reach you after some diurnal cooling which may help, but when it passed us, there were some higher DPs which didn't help with the precip mix. There's a dusting outside here. Some parts between here and Newcastle that are 200m+ have about 2cm lying. Coastal areas just had rain. Good Luck!
  2. Once the cloud clears, it's going to be a skating rink. I'd better get the spiky tyres on my mountain bike for tomorrow.
  3. The flurries have reached Durham. It's settling no problem as this morning's frost still hasn't lifted. Just rode to Durham and back on my bike and can confirm it's this: Bloody Freezing .
  4. Whenever they predict a "Northerly", it ends up a Northwesterly and we kiss goodbye to our convection as it wanders off into the North Sea. Happens every time!
  5. Last time I watched folks skating on the Cambridgeshire Washes was 19th December 2010. Not much snow on the ground, but a very hard and continuous frost gave some excellent skating conditions.
  6. I was never a believer in GFS's 30cm/20cm forecasted snowfalls for Thurs/Fri here, but that appears to have been "downgraded" now to 1cm on Thursday morning. Oh, and some frosts. It sure beats the North Sea gloom though, so I'm happy.
  7. Seems warmer today. Just cold rain - even on the tops. I see the GFS has calmed down from its "snowmageddon" forecast of yesterday!
  8. According to the xcweather forecast, which I think is GFS based, we're going to get 30cm on Thursday, and another 20cm on Friday. Yeah, right - I'll believe that when I see it. Looking chilly though, for sure.
  9. The contrast between today and yesterday is stark. Yesterday was thick fog and raw drippy damp all day. It barely bothered to get light at all. Today, the sun is shining and sparkling off the frost. I'm happy if it stays like this for a few days, before the raw cold gloom of the North Sea returns.
  10. My partner has an e-bike commute that takes her almost to 300m asl. She's bought an extra wheelset for her bike, sporting some nice spiky ice tyres for those more challenging commutes.
  11. There's a lot of folks here who see an Easterly and immediately think "Beast from the East" or "2010" or "You remember 1987?". Having lived near or around the East Coast of England most of my life, I can confirm that an Easterly usually means a solid grey low ceiling, a 2/3c daily range in temperature, 95%+ RH, and a great deal of grimness.
  12. I enjoy a cold winter like many here, but I'm torn this year. There are many reasons why we as Nation would benefit from a benign winter. Which might actually be my worst fear of anticyclonic gloom, so maybe I should be pinning my hopes on that, for the greater good and all that.
  13. My fear is, that "Easterly" turns out to be something more of a Southeasterly, and we have days of anticyclonic gloom off the North Sea; 100m ceiling, drizzle, and day maxes of 5, night minima of 4. BREAK OUT THE SAD LIGHT!!
  14. Bit chillier over the tops today - driving over Stanhope common this afternoon it was only 2.5c in the fog and drizzle. Brrrrr!
  15. Yeah, the autumnal rains that have had those in the south all in a lather since October, have mostly missed us here in the NE. The Pennines mostly do their job I suppose - although today, they were completely overwhelmed and we got a pasting. The weeks of the semi-permanent cutoff low to the SW threw rains across the south, and up the Irish Sea, but pretty much missed us.
  16. Agreed. One of those days when it couldn't be bothered to get fully light. Getting dark now and it's not even 4pm. I'll be firing up the SAD light when I'm on Zwift later.
  17. Well, as weather enthusiasts, we surely enthuse over all record-breaking weather ;). The current warmth is just nuts. I was quite comfy in shorts and t-shirt as I chased my wheelie bin down the street this morning!
