  1. Looking forward to that first 30C day this year. Shame we get so little proper summer weather compared to other European countries (and yes I know Britain has a temperate climate for anyone who jumps at me!).
  2. January 2013 - a pretty decent snow event! February 2019: No words for how incredible that month was. Mean maximum temperatures an incredible 4.9°C above average, comparable to December 2015 in terms of anomalous warmth. March 2022: Brilliant sunny end. April 2020: Stunning May 2018: Stunning and some big storms! June 2018: Stunning July 2018: Stunning August 2022: Hottest first half in my living memory September 2016: Toasty! October 2018: An amazing range from tropical warmth to freezing cold! November 2010: Cold! December 2010: The classic, postcard-picture December.
  3. Heat stress is absolutely known to exacerbate health problems. And in fact I've been vocal before about cold impacts on health so I'm not sure where that's come from
  4. There will have to be the need to fit air conditioning into homes to deal with this. If we get two weeks of 35°C+ heat the impacts could be pretty bad.
  5. Oh yes that end was bitter! I think Exeter Airport recorded -4°C - very impressive for the end of October. A nice variety of weather, almost spring like in terms of the wild swings.
  6. Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could help suggest a reliable, weather logger for use in fieldwork trips. I'm a PhD student working on a new observation technique that requires making measurements of the refractive index of air. To calculate this I would need accurate temperature, air pressure and relative humidity measurements. Could anyone suggest a suitable device?
  7. It must be part of the reason why those living in Mediterranean climates are often healthier.
  8. Another lovely grey and rainy spring day. And blimey, 11°C tomorrow? That's pushing it a bit for late April don't you think? I'll have to leave the winter hats at home soon!
  9. I'll be the grand age of 73 by then (hopefully!).
  10. Still difficult to comprehend reaching 40C but arguably more so seeing a new record min of 26.8C. The first 80F night and almost 3C higher than the previous record. These are truly tropical overnight temperatures and to see it over 50 deg. north is quite something. Genuinely don't know what the limit is now. Could we see a 30C night this century?
  11. The August heatwave we had last year was fantastic. Recorded 34.9C which was the highest I've ever recorded in South Wales. Temperatures dropped down to 24-26C for the second half of the month (still very pleasant)! Overall an excellent month, it was a nice surprise to have an August CET above 18C (the first time in my living memory since I was only 3 years old in 2003). More so after an 18C July! In fact 2022 joins a prestigious group of years seeing two 18C months in a single year (1911 and 1995). Wonder when we will see the first triple 18C+ year? We've had one 18C+ June on record and zero 18C+ September. Who knows what will be possible in a warming climate say 50 years from now?
  12. You would have loved the Initial Eocene Thermal Maximum around 55 million years ago. SST in Equatorial regions were in excess of 36°C. Antarctica had significantly cooler SST of 20°C. Polar regions would be generally subtropical and completely ice free. Global mean temperatures were around 24°C. Quite the change from our relatively chilly 15°C now! The rough location of the UK would probably see absolutely gorgeous winter temperatures of around 25°C, whereas summertime would be truly unbearable. This was a hot and extremely humid world.
  13. Bright until about 20:45 here last night. Sun climbing to almost 51 degrees above the horizon today with a UV index of 6 at 13:00
  14. Overnight 12th into the 13th October 2018. An exceptionally warm October night, at least here in Exeter. It was quite rainy but temperatures remained around 18°C all night. I've never experienced such a tropical feeling night. Normally 18°C overnight is reversed for summer but to have heavy rain and 18°C overnight in October was quite something. Don't hear it spoken about much.
  15. I think we can only keep a lid on the heat for so long. Iberia is getting baked already and with some an exceptionally warm airmass already I think we will be in for a surprise sooner than we think.
  16. Feeling mild this evening. Still over 13°C in Exeter. A very pleasant afternoon.
  17. IMO we will see a return of the Biscay Low periodically bringing exceptionally hot weather to the UK. A bit like 2019 but hotter.
  18. Temperature wise I haven't been too fussed this spring. Up to mid April it's normally quite cool. It's just so flipping cloudy/rainy for so long that it's just makes going outside miserable. I have a 35 minute walk to the office and in strong winds/rain it's just dire. The lack of sunshine is really not healthy either. I take vitamin D tablets but the grey colour to everything really grinds me down. Today is a beautiful sunny day here and it's just fantastic how much it lifts my mood. The long evenings are so much more pleasant for long walks/runs and nature just feels so much more alive! Here's to hopefully a prolonged period of sunny spells and mild temperatures
  19. God I cannot wait for that first calm, sunny 20°C day. It's been probably over 6 months now since I last experienced one (I am definitely living in the wrong country).
  20. Was going to say I don't think July's in recent years have been particularly wet either!
  21. Amazing how quick the changes are at this time of year. The subsolar point is already over 8° north of the equator. Latitudes north of 64°N will now never experience true night until early September. This "twilight" circle as I like to call it (analogous to the arctic circle in terms of 24 hour sun) will extend southwards until the June solstice, reaching a maximum southerly extent of around 48.6°N. Regions north of this will never see the sun dip below -18° above the horizon, meaning astronomical twilight lasts 24 hours for at least part of the year.
  22. Yep, 100% humidity at 0°C is actually pretty dry air compared to 30% humidity at 30°C. That is, in terms of actual mass of water vapour per kilogram of dry air.
