  1. The only comfort I'm getting from these dismal charts is the apparent lack of extreme storminess. Other than that it's the worst kind of output for this time of year.
  2. Perhaps we could modify ocean currents in the north Atlantic. That damn Gulf Stream and North Atlantic Drift make the ocean much warmer than it would be. If we find a way to disrupt those troublemakers any winds that blow off the Atlantic will be much cooler.
  3. But you're north of me. Also, I'm only around 130 metres asl so not much higher either. I'd guess we're similarly situated for snow - i.e. not that well.
  4. Perhaps if we all smash up a sledge, throw our winter coats in the bin, and generally just get rid of anything cold weather-related the weather might just change... Does reverse psychology work on the weather?
  5. It looks and sounds like it too - there are flies and gnats flying around in the garden, and birdsong is quite loud too. It may as well be spring the way things are going.
  6. Is there a thread where we can moan about irritating TV weather presenters? Darren Bett really got on my wick last night on the BBC, using the phrase "at least it's mild" or words to that effect when describing today's (Christmas Day's!) weather.
  7. There was wonderful thick fog last night around here, and now the weather is cool and calm- classic wintery weather. Shame it won't last I suppose, and the charts further out beyond 10 days want to throw more Atlantic dross our way into January. I hate winter in this country sometimes.
  8. The only good thing about the weather in the run up to the festive season, and during Christmas itself is the lack of extreme winds. Otherwise it's fairly much typical December sludge. Roll on New Year/mid January/February/March (delete as applicable!)
  9. Anything that involves strong winds is a big no-no for me, so that would be the winter of 2013-14 at the very least. I also remember a nasty windy spell early in 2012 (February?) and in February 1997 - having to replace damaged fence panels is no fun. (dis) Honourable mention to the atrociously wet, mild weather in December 2015.
  10. It wasn't just confined to eastern coastal areas. I live in the west midlands and remember that spell well. It was some of the heaviest snow of my childhood and one of my fondest memories was building a snowman and snow wall with my Dad, and the epic snowball fight that followed.
  11. I'm by no means experienced at chart watching/interpretation, but the strengthening jet coming out of eastern Canada at 300H on GFS 12z looks like bad news from a coldie's perspective. Someone please tell me I'm flat wrong!
  12. Best: 1) 2009-10 2) 1995-96 3) 1986-87 4) 1990-91 5) 2012-13 Worst: 1) 2013-14 2) 2015-16 3) 1988-89 4) 1999-2000 5) 1997-98
