Showing my age here, the one my brother and I built in December 1963 lasted until May. Ok, he was just a lump of compacted ice by then but he was still there !
-
A wet and windy night, rain hammering against my north facing window all night and gusts swirling around the outside of the house. It's 1.1c, although I miraculously awoke at 2:30am and it was 0.1c with some blowing flakes outside. Nothing settled, so it's VERY wet outside and very little snow from last Monday remaining.
I should add that we've had 39mm rain in the past 24 hours. Wind is 21mph gusting 35mph from the NW.
Same here Tommy ! Cant believe there is some snow left lying after so much ******* rain!
-
I would expect things to change for you soon. the low is moving to the East, so the cold should start digging in soon.
Thanks for the info sno'problem ! Wind getting up and sleet mixed in the rain
-
Think your probably correct about the lying snow having a cooling effect, been snowing here most of the evening, very heavy at times too, grass is under a thick blanket of snow again and people footprints that were on pavements are covered once more. Just down the road in aylesbury it's been raining mostly and they are at a higher elevation i think than here. Just goes do show what influence snow cover has on temperature. You notice alot more on frosty clear nights when theres lying snow, seems to suck the temps down quickly.
We have lying snow even with all this rotten rain but no sign of it turning to snow, even though we are up high in the Chilterns.
-
Its been raining solidly since last night and I am surprised how much lying snow is still there despite the deluge. I wonder how deep it would be by now if had all fallen as snow !
-
still rain here. UKMO is awful, spolier shortwave near iceland. lets hope it hasnt picked a new trend.
Rain here too. Thanks to Nimbostratus for Bucks update, hope you get what weather you want tonight in Milton Keynes. And splodging what a perfect term for that magic moment when rain turns to something more interesting more interesting on car wind screens !
-
Temps seem to be lowering slightly, down to 1.6'c dewpoint 1.1'c. No doubt it seems colder than forcasters had predicted this early on in the day, were saying 4 - 5'c towards here till after dark. Was raining earlier, but now stopped. Clouds in the sky have gotten the strange look about them now, if you can line them up with lying snow it's sort of hard to distiguish from the two. Im guessing with current ob's round here, looking good later on for snowfall. Especially as the low seems to running more to the south, give a longer time for colder air to dig into the really heavy stuff
Has anyone any thoughts how the Chilterns will fare for snow tonight/tomorrow? Its very hard to find us on weather maps as we arent East Anglia, South, Midlands or Greater London
-
my word, you guys weren't fibbing about the size of the flakes. They are enormous!
Huge fat flakes here in Chesham up in the Chilterns, is that a sign that it will turn to rain later?
-
Heavy wet and settling snow here in Chesham Bucks in the Chilterns starting at 6.30 pm
-
It was drizzling and mild when the puppy needed a walk at 5.30 . By 6.30 it had snowed. Now at 7.10 heavy snow settling. I also thought I heard distant thunder earlier.
-
Had a little snow about a half hour ago, temperature about 0C, it was settling.
Just hope that the northward advance of the milder air is held up by the colder air coming from the north - anything can happen in these situations, despite what the charts say.
Great ! The Chiltern anti=snow magnet has been switched off ! Snowing hard with lovely big fat flakes...fingers and toes crossed it wont turn train Good night and stay warm and safe everyone
-
Is it heading for Norwich? If so, will it fall as snow?
Had a light flurry of snow at 11 tonight , nothing happening at the moment. The Chilterns anti-snow magnet on full power again !
-
Has this been a disappointment for most people then?
A little disappointed to be honest, the Chilterns has had some snow but not nearly as much as at lower levels in nearby areas. All the talk of loads more snow at rush hour for the South East did not happen here. Someone has put a snow deflector for the Chilterns !
-
Not sure why we aren't getting some of your St Albans snow here in the Chilterns- you are not that far away. We had plenty during the afternoon, now just tiny grains but at least its snow and not wretched rain ! There was a lot of talk in the media this evening about massive amounts of heavy snow for the rush hour over a wide area of the south east. Where has it gone? :o

Well, with the pointless optimism of a crazed snow lover, I awaited the Daily Excess's forecast of nationwide cripplingly deep snow this week.
So apart from frightening the old and vulnerable with their bizarre over the top headline forecasts, they were wrong and unrepentant again.
As they were with previous tall tales of killer blizzards, killer low temperatures, killer tornadoes etc etc.
As usual, no apology, no explanations. And they will do it again and again. A horrible way to sell a few more papers.

By what conceivable measurement is 2 to 5cm 'Heavy Snow'. It seems that it is impossible for the Met Office to predict any kind of snow without it being deemed 'heavy'. Now 20 to 50cm is heavy, but 2cm is barely a dusting.
Trying not to get too excited as Easter was another non event for us. People are either very young or have very short memories! Snow in April is perfectly seasonal and normal. I remember days when it was hot enough to arrange a barbie in the morning and trying to eat our sausages in driving snow by the afternoon! (April 1985?) or abandoning playing netball at school because of the heat one day, and trudging through three foor of snow the next. April is not called the cruelest month for nothing!

I have a feeling this could be quite a long thread today.
Please post all reports of Wintriness here!

Hi ! Its ten past twelve here in Chesham , in the Chilterns..very windy - and its snowing !!!
-
Could be time to pen another letter ..... see what happens at the weekend at first, they might be right, this time!
I didnt know whether to laugh or cry at the inevitable Daily Excess arctic blast front page headlines ! They are so ridiculous but if they say it enough, maybe they will be right one day. LOL  The TV weather forecasts were down playing the weekend to just snow showers along the northern and eastern coastlines- sigh

Clear skies first thing with slight frost, sudden and prolonged snow shower at approx 8.30am with some slight settling. Now sunshine and thickening clouds from the north west. Far more then I was expecting from forecasts
-
Clear skies here, yawn. Forecasts all day of isolated snow showers during the night now surprise , surprise changed to dry night. Enjoy it if you have it.
-
The heavy rain this evening (Friday) briefly turned to snow at 11.30 pm that settled straight away. Now just gone midnight and its back to heavy rain. sigh
-
Just started snowing here .......a light flurry, with a few bigger flakes thrown in,im crossing my fingers for more to come.
Outside weather station thermometer reading -1 at the moment.
OK, so now we have snow falling, Its stopped in Sunbury on Thames, so dont expect much here, pretty though!
-
Don't know what you're talking about.
I've just sent this letter of thanks to Paul Dacre, Editor of the Daily Mail:
I'll post his reply.
Great Letter! Doubt if you will get a reply though, as likely as two foot of snow lying for three weeks across the whole of the UK ! Hope I am wrong on both things !
December has not been that mild has it overall? Thought it was below average? It has got beyond ridiculous! All this silly talk of ' Arctic blasts , snow events, killer blizzards...big freezes!'
All media over-hypers should be forced to spend time in Canada where they get all of the above! And dont make a fuss about it.
-
Some light snowy/sleety rubbish at Heathrow Airport, Well worth waiting for NOT
My husband just phoned me to say the rain had turned to snow in Sunbury on Thames in the last ten minutes. Still snow no show in the Chilterns...sigh....

Definetly still some lying snow here in the Chilterns. Hard to believe when we have had so much rain and sun andit wasnt that deep to start with.
