  1. from the less well-known “st Coolio flying from LHR” model:

    - has only occurred three times in the last decade
    -  but each time resulted in disruptive snowfall and a long delay for de-icing
    - flights booked for 7-10 March this year
    - snow inevitable

    - place your bets. Free money.

In very slight defence, they did put the Amber warning on a trajectory that meant it could turn red. But the public probably would not have been away of this.

Is there a case for putting somewhere on a "red watch", a bit like a hurricane watch in the Caribbean? In other words "There's the chance the warning may be upgraded to red". That way, no overcommital from the Met Office, and people get adequate notice.

would double like this if it were possible

some sort of simplification that doesn't directly combine risk and impact but instead describes the two things simultaneously in the communication to the public

saw one earlier from Stansted to Dublin which circled for a bit and then diverted to Manchester!

Yeh this is what I was posting about earlier though our pilot decided to plonk us down. That was right at the start of jan 2012, when they put the warnings up to red really really late and the metoffice got absolutely slated for it

Why not back to Southampton it's closer ...

Think the storm had already moved into Southampton.

lashing it down now in the test valley. For some reason, I wasn’t expecting such heavy rain. Probably wasn’t paying attention.

Some of these landings on Bigjet look "fun". Been on a plane landing in a storm before and and you could feel the pilot fighting against the wind.

I once had a prop plane flight Southampton to Dublin, circled around above the Irish Sea for 30 mins waiting to see if the winds over the airfield dropped enough to within tolerances. Eventually the pilot told us we were going in anyway as the option of returning to bristol, cardiff, whatever was no longer viable because of winds increasing there.

so we plopped down onto the runway, perfect landing, hardly a bump… but couldn’t get onto the stand and when we got off via the steps you could hardly stand up in the strength of the wind.

I talked to the crew and apparently the wind had veered a bit so it was less of a crosswind, otherwise we’d been off to amsterdam or Newcastle or something.
