  1. Mid-April 1966 was exceptionally dull in the south. I was 12 years old living in Essex and I remember a period of snow for a time which lay during one afternoon (I should think 14th or 15th) because there was no April sun to thaw it. At Cardington sunshine was recorded on only one day during the period 11th to 20th April and it including a long period of snow on 14th and 15th - a thoroughly miserable spell of weather being cold and wet as well.

Early August 1968 was exceptionally dull in the South East at least because of low pressure over the near continent.

I was working at Dunkeswell for a few years during the 1990's. I remember November 1994 was persistently dull with 26.8 hours of sunshine, but as already mentioned, January 1996 was also exceptionally dull with 19.8 hours, though not nearly as other places in the country.

  2. I would like to travel back to 6th August 1981 and experience the day darkness which I have heard quite a bit about. I was in West Sussex at the time and although it was quite dramatic, I don't remember it getting particularly dark.

Also, I would like to experience the 24th June 1994 storm. I was abroad on holiday at the time and I only learnt of it a few days later after I got home. It sounds something really dramatic.

  3. I remember the disastrous weather then being in the main news. I was living in NW Essex then so I was to the north of the most dramatic action. I do remember that during the afternoon of Saturday 14th it got progressively darker, and then when I was walking in Hatfield Forest I heard a rumble of thunder but not seeing lightning.  There was probably alot of low cloud as well as the trees in the forest obscuring it.

It was certainly a wet weekend even where I was.

Can't remember which year it was (possibly 2017) Hurricane Orphelia brought that unusually warm day in October along with the apocalyptic orange sky and red sun, remember that very well and is proof not to underestimate the weather Hurricanes can bring to our shores.

It was 16th October 2017. It became really gloomy with Saharan dust and smoke from Iberian wildfires, and appeared threatening for a storm, but as I recall there was only a little light rain, at least at Pagham around that time.

Late August 95 deteriorated rapidly after an exceptional summer, setting up a very wet September..It wasn't especially cold though.

My memories of going back to school often of warm sunny fine days.

I ran the Exmouth half marathon on 27th of that month. It was a relief to run in cooler fresher conditions, but the strong wind blowing down the River Exe from a NW'ly direction was a definite hindrance to the running.

I don't feel I have the right to complain about this summer, it certainly hasn't been perfect, but compared to many places, we've had things rather good. But trust me even we are complaining when meaning each other out and about. Things were really bad in July in the north and west, and no one can say otherwise. Here may was again pretty sunny, just cold because of the wind, rest of the east were stuck in cloud and drizzle a lot of the time.

Living in Pagham till 2 weeks into July then in Hamstreet, we often avoided the worst of any bad weather that was going in July and August.
