Seem to be a regular occurrence these days, we've had a number of very mild Halloweens, 2014 exceptionally so, and I can't remember the last cold frosty Bonfire Night. Alas this year thanks to other events, most people will likely be indoors, so it doesn't really matter.

We're now entering the true peak of autumn in my view - which lasts until about the 10th November, a time of rapid change in the feel of everything largely thanks to the clocks going back, and in normal times the Halloween and Bonfire Night celebrations. Its usually a period peppered with the first gales/storms of the season, days with heavy rain, and sometimes not always the first proper lingering frosts of the season and snow on the very highest peaks (the latter two things increasingly seem to be happening later every year, mid November... ). Leaf colour is at its best, before being stripped clean by the storms or frosts..

Yes there seems to be a recurring stormy period from mid oct to mid Nov (although absent in recent years).  Remember this in 96, 98, 00, 02, 04, 05, 06, 09 and 13 which all would have had at least 1, if not multiple names storms had they been around then.  Next week looking potentially stormy as well.

  2. Back in the 80s and early 90s we almost always got a power cut from thunderstorms but this hasn't happened once since.

The 1987 and 1990 wind storms left us with power cuts but it was restored the same day.  During ciara in February we had an outage for 1h which was surprising because power cuts due to severe weather seem to be a thing of the past

    February:

    Mean: 9.4C

An exceptionally mild month with an extraordinary mean high of 13.1C.  Initially cloudy and rainy with a tropical maritime airmass.  Towards the final third of the month high pressure builds from the south and an extremely long-fetched southerly wind drags warm air from the Sahara.  Dusty skies result in spectacular sunsets/sunrises and an unprecedented maximum temperature of 23.0C is recorded in Southern England on the 28th (just over two years since the last February record was obliterated).

23c has been recorded on 9th march before (in the somewhat cooler 1940s), so just 10 days earlier would not be out of the realms of possibility..

20c in Jan.. would have to be a foehn effect to get this.

Some snowfalls that disappointed here are:

17th January 2016 - precipitation not heavy enough and was a bit marginal, so ended up with drizzle

    10th February 2012 - hardly any precipitation

18th February 2010 - heavy snow falling all day but never settled

08th February 2007 - heavy snow only briefly then milder air followed

24th February 2005 - as mentioned by somebody else, ended up too marginal so had sleet either side of snow shower days

Some snowfalls that exceeded expectations are:

01st February 2019 - the persistence of heavy snow was impressive as it the snow mass kept building on the northern edge

27th December 2017 - after a wet Christmas & Boxing Day, it was surprising to see how much snow settled

14th January 2015 - under the sweet spot of a snow streamer off the Severn; melted very quickly in the sunshine though

18th December 2010 - impressive dumping after already catching a streamer the day before

21st December 2009 - again, the famous Severn streamer aligned itself perfectly during the early hours

05th & 06th February 2009 - forecasts had suggested rain south of the M4 earlier in the week, but actually these places got the heaviest snow

12th March 2006 - wasn't expecting much precipitation with the heavier stuff forecast to be to the north, but still copped a few inches

26th February 2004 - a few hours of very heavy snow (whiteout conditions)

10th December 2002 - what could've been a much better easterly still produced lying snow for a time

    Some completely unexpected snowfalls:

06th April 2008 - wasn't expecting a trough in the early hours to be this far west, but left a dusting

11th January 2008 - heavy rain all morning turned to snow in the afternoon and stuck; one of the few times I've seen flooded roads and snow on the verges

09th February 2007 - a true fight between milder and colder air with heavy snow falling for much of the day but never quite settling

24th January 2007 - what should've been a wishbone northerly, left a dusting in the early hours

28th February 2005 - after the failed easterly the week before, it was a surprise to wake up to lying snow under a much more anticyclonic setup

19th December 2004 - went to bed to the sound of pouring rain on the roof the night before and woke up to a good few inches of snow; classic slidergate

Most other snow instances were as expected.

Yes to counterbalance the disappointment of failed snowfalls there's always the other side of the coin.  A few for this area..

1 February 2019.  We were forecast just a sleety mixture for the friday afternoon  after a couple of inches overnight.  What we got was the deepest snow I remember experiencing on the ground after continuous very heavy snow from about 2pm to 8pm

6 april 2008.  We were forecast some snow showers on the sunday morning, but not the deepest ever april snow at about 4 inches, with a massive boom of thunder from a single positive strike which totalled power lines in a local village

21 December 2009.  The big one for this area.  Was to be just rain, but an afternoon of traffic chaos ensued after 4 inches in 3 hours

6 feb 2009 stands out too for a heavy thundery snow shower, although there was already snow on the ground

Seems like everyone is really enjoying this interesting weather....or not. Nothing fun about 100mm of rain in 2-3 days.

I'm enjoying it for the rarity.  Local stations are just shy of 100mm since Thursday evening now.  I cannot remember this much rain before.. there was a period in November 2003 that came close.

It's not too unusual to get say 40-50mm in 1 day from a single event in lowland southern England, I just dont remember so much over 2 to 3 days, it's just so rare.

Glad that we might get some actual sunshine tomorrow though!

I believe so, got another 12h heavy rain forecast from this evening here

Local stations are closing in on 60mm since Thursday evening with more to come

Meant to press edit instead of quoting myself.. oops

That is true.  Sunny and dry weather makes it more bearable than lashing rain for days on end however.

I do find that if you have stormy weather with rain lashing on the windows it somehow lifts the mood a bit.. probably a bit of adrenalin kicking in as the weather gets that bit more exciting.  Same with snow..

Appreciate not everyone likes this kind of weather though.

    Mid October 1993

Actually loved october 1993, one of my best childhood months.  There were thundery showers literally most days in the first third or so (more so than many summer months) but then it turned crisp and cold for the second half.  Remember some very frosty days.

Started intermittently raining at 10pm last night here and hasn't stopped since 7am...truly dire.

Same here.. seems to have come in pulses of heavy rain interspersed with drizzle all day.  Looks to be the case until sunday morning!  Gusty easterly wind eased a bit now though

  10. It showed in North Hampshire on 28th october 2008 and a few patches were still around on 30th.  Remarkable for october really.

I'm also sure I remember seeing pictures of enormous drifts in Devon on this latter date as well.. guessing this must have been on the moors but can't be 100% sure of this.. just going on memory.

This is the only fall I remember in October down here though

Have a gut feeling it’s going to be a repeat of last year - was around the same time last year it turned very unsettled as well.

Yes, mon 30th sep 2019, downpour at about 8pm when coming home from work.  Tonight, the same!  Pretty much identical synoptics.. let's hope the winter is more interesting than last (could take repeat of mid feb though)

Feb '94! unlike the modern eera, mild air just refused to win, snowfest!

    archives-1994-2-24-0-0.png

Mild air did penetrate into the south on occasion that month but we had good falls on 14/15thand 21/22nd.  But yes, Midlands northwards I remember it was reportedly a snow fest.  Similar in character to what happened for a bit in December 2009, between xmas and new year
