  1. stainesbloke At the worry about going too far off topic I’ll just say that the way water privatisation was set up, with a deliberately weak & captured regulator, it has been nothing more than a 30 year state sponsored theft on an epic scale, it was designed like this on purpose which makes it all the more galling. Circa £70bn of our bills has been used to pay out as dividends; I read today that Thames & SE haven’t even bothered mapping out their assets (infrastructure) after all this time. Only in supine Britain could this have happened - no other country in the world has privatised water, they (both govts) really don’t work for us so think hard who you vote for at the next GE. Unfortunately, our tax avoiding, media baron oligarchs make sure their newspapers focus on the really important stuff like: greedy nhs workers, the Kardashian's latest boob jobs, identity politics and bendy bananas instead.
  2. Sentinel Bacteria in the sea will be transported away from the source by underwater currents, wind and wave action. Yes it will be diluted but it can still infect. Good luck anyway, I hope you don’t fall sick when you do take the plunge
  3. Sentinel Have you heard about the enormous volumes of raw sewage that the water companies are still releasing into our seas? Does that not put you off? Our waters are ridden with e-Coli
  4. raz.org.rain Fingers crossed on that SSW theory then. After the last 8/9 mths of wet, I won’t ever moan / whinge about a prolonged dry spell of weather in this country again.
  5. In Absence of True Seasons It’s just a never ending sh*t show of weather we’re getting. It’s 11.9c right now, very gusty with intermittent showers, it feels like a winters day outside right now, you’d never think the sun is as strong now as it is mid-August. Where’s the Bartlett High when you need it?!
  6. ANYWEATHER You made no point, what you did do is choose to deliberately misquote and mislead - behaviour more suited to the Sun or Daily Express comments section, not here.
  7. ANYWEATHER Can you provide the source for your claim "between 1940 and 1960 there was an unprecedented lack of snow in the Alps ,worse than today's fiasco! " please? This piece of research doesn't substantiate your claim: Recent Alps snow cover decline ‘unprecedented’ in past 600 years - Carbon Brief WWW.CARBONBRIEF.ORG The duration of snow cover in the Alps is now 36 days shorter than the long-term average – an “unprecedented” decline over the past 600 years – according to recent research. "They identified episodes over the past 600 years with notably long and short snow cover duration. Some of the longest include the 1440-1460 and 1780-1800 periods, while some of the shortest occur in the low-snowy decades of 1940-1960"
  8. ANYWEATHER I'm looking at SSTs that are +4c above average as being unprecedented since records began. There was a time recently when a SST anomaly of +1 or +2c would have sounded extreme, so that needs to be put into perspective. I don't dispute what you say when you look at the bigger picture over thousands & millions of years either.
  9. In Absence of True Seasons I’ve noticed all of that as well, things are a lot lusher now we’ve had some warmth at last. Weather wise I’m still feel short changed about this current lull in the weather, yes it’s stopped raining but any sunshine is intermittent and right now the sky is 8 Oktas. It’s been a long time since we’ve had unbroken sunshine..
  10. danm Very useful to see the stats broken down like this - thanks. As far as wetter months and seasons are concerned, all that has gone on before cannot be used as an indicator for what is to come, especially when we've had record SST's in the N Atlantic that are +4c higher than normal. This is unprecedented and so I think we've essentially entered a new phase with our climate. Nobody 100% knows what these extreme increases will bring us, although, unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised if the last 8-9 months of UK wet becomes the norm.
  11. To have no drying influence from an anticyclone for so many consecutive months is incredible, I cannot remember a longer unsettled period than this, this weather pattern is extraordinary.
  12. Yet another drench-fest this morning, I’ve never known a 6-7mth spell of weather like it, it’s just so utterly depressing. I won’t be surprised to see this flip to the other extreme at some point - there’s no changeable weather anymore just long ‘rutts’ that parts of the world get stuck under for entire seasons
  13. andymusic Amazing photos Andy, did you take them yourself? You can see Orion really easily in the starry photo, the Aurora is photo is facing due North I assume?
  14. Well these percentages maybe small but the general consensus among scientists is that they are already altering weather patterns & climate.
  15. WYorksWeather I don't really get your angle on this - are you disputing the New Scientist article and / or the potential effects on the climate of so much Methane being released into the atmosphere (Methane is 100 times more potent a Greenhouse gas than CO2)?
  16. stainesbloke Yes, a rapid transition to spring with warm temperatures and no rain is needed (I love the snow but its the last thing the land needs right now). Once the trees wake up they will soak up a lot of the high water table. Feb was 4.9c above average by the way, truly extraordinary
  17. stainesbloke This is the wettest spell of autumn & winter months in my lifetime. I really fear this could be the new norm. I wonder what this environmental disaster has done to global SSTs, Global Temps and weather patterns? Nord Stream leak may have been largest methane emission ever recorded WWW.NEWSCIENTIST.COM The Nord Stream breach released between 56,000 and 155,000 tonnes of methane into the atmosphere, making it among the largest methane emissions ever recorded from a...
  18. Catacol I read somewhere that the Nordstream explosion released an unprecedented volume of Methane into the atmosphere - I wonder if anyone is doing any research into the effects of that explosion and the dynamics of the atmosphere since it happened?
  19. cheese I agree, but the lack of cold is just as pronounced on the western side of Europe. Some ex work colleagues from the Netherlands told me that between the 60's - 80's it was common to skate on frozen canals in most winters, that hardly ever happens now. As a side note, their accents made me laugh, they reminded me of those 2 Dutch Cops on the Fast Show
  20. SunnyG 17mm of rain fell in N20 yesterday, that's one-third of the Feb average falling in one day so definitely not ordinary! There was a particularly intense spell in the afternoon after 2pm which was accompanied by a squall - it was a horrible day
  21. In Absence of True Seasons Its been blowing non-stop since Sunday as well, my fence post hates it.
  22. Agreed, and also with your other post which mentions the recent cold snap preventing early flowering in the garden. The way I see it is that even when background signals are good, getting any sustained length of winter cold in NW Europe is highly unlikely, frankly impossible these days. Whenever a cold spell like this one breaks down, or like the one in Dec 22, its always replaced with a powerful & relentless barrage of zonality, sometimes, as was the case for the SE in Dec 22 for the remainder of the winter. I remember winter Scandy highs from 30-40yrs ago bringing subzero temperatures and battleground snow to the SW many times, not any more, these days it’s all about the Bartlett High during winter months. Cold & snow chasing for the UK, especially in the South is a hapless hobby these days, it’s quite depressing. Anyway, roll on the clocks going forward and the spring time.
  23. Coldest night here in many years, it got down to -4.5c between 7-8am with dew point of -10c. At 1015 it’s -2.7c 67% R/H 1004mb
  24. Spot on. There were even references to 1947 & 1963 in the last chase! I might be wrong but with SSTs being so much warmer now (~+2.5c) coupled with a shrinking arctic ice-mass, I don’t think it would be possible to repeat those winter now…. Ah well, let the crazy kids carry on, it’s entertaining
  25. Its all starting up again in the MAD thread and once again its all FI stuff, 29th Jan and beyond - its quite sadistic what they're doing to themselves. Don't get me wrong I hope it comes off but it seems like you need a 1001 things to be perfectly aligned for it to happen That is shocking
