  1. Rather chilly in the breeze but not bad for January. We are in to the coldest bit of the year. Nothing cold for my team Wolves beat WBA in the FA Cup😁No doubt winter will have a sting in the tail. Still Feb and March to go for cold fans.

  2. 34 days to go . Noticed this evening a definite change in the look of the weather. More definition in the clouds. The glare of the sun off the trees. Light in the sky at 17.20. Two thirds through on 30th Jan. Winter on its way out🙂

  3. Pretty turbulent out there. Just walked down the road from the local pub. It's all downhill with the prevailing wind coming full on in your face. With the rain it was not particularly pleasant. However. The trade off is +8c in the morning so it doesn't feel like you are going to the bog in a freezer!  Swings and roundabouts. Sunny and cold v mild wet and windy !

Even better, the incoming mild plume is expected to blast through Scandinavia, so we'll likely be losing that cold reserve.

Yeah. 5 and a half weeks until March. The longer the extreme cold stays away the better. Bloke who comes in our local pub jetting out to India for the test cricket India v England. He said 'enjoy the winter' as he left the pub.

Feels like a monumental flop given how much ramping up there was for what was supposedly the best chances of a 2010 repeat in over a decade. You couldn't say otherwise either, you'd get your head bitten off.

True mate. Frightened to say anything without someone jumping down your throat.

This is often the case, especially these days!

Nothing wrong with looking for the next chase as long as people keep their feet on the ground.  It would be the same in summer with folk looking for the next potential heatwave following a breakdown to unsettled conditions.  The difference is people would get less stick for doing that!

The days of looking for a heatwave are a distant dream Don. Still plenty of time  for your snow bomb chap.

Right that's it, time for a new "worryingly dry" thread now I think 😂

That chart doesn't get any better for me in mid-winter. The next 5 mornings of sub zero temperature fill me with dread. I love mild weather in winter and if the chart comes off will be very happy 😊

  8. Hold my hands up. Never has it been terrible cold so far. But as a summer lover must admit I am doubting down the days towards spring 👍

    Counting...

  9. A steady decrease in temperature during the week and also a drier spell since Tuesday. Although not a fan of chilly weather the next week is welcome. We have had our share of rainfall this past 12 months. I have a feeling 2024 could deliver something more akin to seasonal variation. We will see.

It’ll be interesting to view the anomaly charts for 2023 when Metoffice release them in the next day or 2. I’d be shocked if it didn’t show that 2023 was duller and ally wetter than average…of course we all know it’ll be milder than average too.

2024 you owe us big time ☀️ 🙏🏼

Agree. Awful year 2023. Terrible spring. Decent early summer. Week in September. Some stuff in October. Otherwise. Rain rain rain rain.

  11. Happy New Year all. Looks like High Pressure is taking over by the weekend. We desperately need a few weeks of dry weather. The constant rain is getting tiresome now. Where the High goes is crucial to how the winter progresses. If the High is to the south/SW/SE it is likely mild/dry/cloudy. If it goes north/ north east/east/ north west it will please (probably) the cold fans. Whatever it does enjoy 2024!

  12. Good evening. Talk of Spring above. I calculate 14th January at mid day to be exactly half way in winter 23/24. So 12:01 onwards is on the other side downhill towards spring. Next couple of weeks the catkins will appear. Then end of January the hawthorn hedgerows buds will appear. Evenings drawing out. It's all there. But also the coldest part of the year so still time for Coldies to celebrate!

At least it's getting a bit less mild, this March-like mildness has really thrown my mental clock off in the past week.

Nice profile pic btw. Also, your weather preferences are very close to mine 😁

The sunrises are still getting later until December 31st... The lengthening of the days is barely noticeable until around February 7th. Until then the length of the day barely changes from the solstice.

Evenings already lighter by 5 minutes today.
