It was only temporarily, dropping a little now to -0.7C
This is quite normal in these situations where the upper air is cold, but not very cold. Being on a hill prevents the extreme inversion cold that many others have been seeing, unless the inversion is deep.

No ice day here as its already 0.5C and rising. Could reach the heady height of 2-3C today.. very rare recently.

Seems we are at the very edge of the inversion layer here, the temperature has not gone that low but its up and down like the Assyrian empire, which suggests the inversion layer is shallow but powerful. Now its -2.3C and rising fast, but it will fall equally as fast soon.
I suppose in a way its like air turbulence.

The difference is staggering, even across Merseyside. Here it is -2.5 currently, after a minimum of -3.4C

falling gradually, now -3.3C, I expect to hit -5C before rising rapidly around 5am. Some eye opening temperatures around the west coast right now, particularly in Merseyside, near the coast.

We have a notable breeze here from the NW so unless it drops out it won't be as cold tonight. Currently -0.5C after a high of 0.9C

Being a Gardener is handy because you can tell from plant damage what the temperature was in a particular place.
For example I know the plant in flower below doesn't tolerate lower than -3C so it can't have been lower than -3C in this location. On the other hand, the plant after that has some slight damage which would start occurring at -2C so I can guess from this in this location it was about -2.5C so far, based on the plant damage when it was taken yesterday. (Both will look damaged today in comparison)
Also you can verify how accurate your sensor is using this.. for example -8C will damage green Cordylines so if your sensor read -8C and you have damaged Cordyline after the ice thaws, you know its broadly accurate
Plants are useful indicators for sure.

Minimum temperature was -4.5C followed by a rise to its current -2.2C
Certainly will have knocked down any surviving summer flowers!
On my allotment about 2 miles from my weather station, I think it must have fell to -7C as it is in a frost hollow. I think I need to set up a data logger there.

-3.6C now, but a slight breeze seems to be stopping a rapid plummet. However as I found out in 2010, the temperature can fall very fast in the space of a few hours.

-2.9C currently. The met office suggests after 10pm the temperatures will really slide as we we get rid of any cloudy patches, that may be causing the temperature to fluctuate at the moment.

Temperatures are going to widely fall to around -5 to -10C around the region tonight.
Here temperatures are falling, perhaps not as fast as other places, but it will be -5C at this rate, by dawn, at least.
If there is an inversion layer, it could result in some freakishly low temperature by dawn. That's how our record cold was broken in 2010, courtesy of a mid-level inversion. Could happen again tonight.

Recorded the first ice day in over a generation here, it has been hovering at -0.7C for some time.

-4.5C, .. I'll have to check but I think that's equal with 2018 and the joint coldest since December 2010. Very strong surface cold in this spell.
No fog yet either.
Ice day looks likely? It will be the first ice day since I started recording in the early 2000s, if it occurs. (Believe it or not December 2010 did not deliver an ice day here as on the day after the coldest night we saw milder air coming in, in the evening, above 0C)

Coldest temperatures since the beast in 2018 here with -4.0C at the moment.
This actually almost meets the average absolute minimum in the LTA here which is -4.2C in any given winter.
We will almost certainly beat -4.2 today but it has taken a hard cold spell and snow cover to meet that average.
(The LTA for average absolute minimum in winter in the last 10 years on my recordings is -1.7C however)

-1.5C now, that's the coldest temperature since Spring 2021. Could well drop to -3C by morning. Outside chance of -5C if freezing fog forms.

That's pretty extraordinary. Still fluctuating between -0.7 and -1.0C here. If the inversion ceiling rises above 100m we might be able to join the party too!
