This country will never suffer from a long drought, imho this is nonsense. Rivers ran dry before and will run dry again. Then it will rain like we are used to and everything will be fine. We are in summer, a lovely summer it has been.

Australia was all over the news a few months back as they were in a drought. Reservoirs back to being full suddenly and not a peep from the press or those saying climate change etc

I remember not long ago people would say "40 celsius would never be recorded in the UK", with their rationale being the UK is too small a landmass and surrounded by water ergo we would never get the required daytime heating even in v hot airmasses. Well recent events have proven them wrong I'd say.

We need to accept in a warming world and changing climate anything can happen, including previously unthinkable extreme events.

First proper rainy day here in what feels like an eternity.

You don't half really appreciate the rain when you haven't had much of it for a while.

Raining here too which is good to see.  I must have a chuckle at the current Met Office forecast summary for my area though, which is "A cloudy start with a few spots of light rain and drizzle at first...".  It's currently throwing it down out there and has been for a while now.

Beautiful day here in London Town. It’s sunny and very warm, pushing 28°c currently. This is the summer that keeps on giving.

More like the summer that has long outstayed its welcome...

Cloudy but warmish where I am with little wind  (again).  There's supposed to be some rain later but judging by recent form I'm not going to get my hopes up.

Noticeably darker now. So good to not be woken up very early by the rising sun in June and July with the birds going crazy. Entering my favourite slice of the year now - late August to late March.

Agree 100%!  Now, if only the weather would get the message and cool down a little more.

Hi, new to these forums (fora?) but most definitely a heat hater!  I have to ask - what's the "MAD" thread?

    Hey welcome aboard!

The "MAD" thread is the Model Output Discussion thread, but is often labelled the MAD thread due to the sometimes rather hyperbolic and over-enthusiastic discussion that take place, especially in summer when hot weather seems possible (and in winter when cold weather seems possible).

  6. Oh please not another heatwave this summer!  Rumours are flying around that a hot spell could happen during the BH weekend, which if it does happen is the last thing many of us need.  Pray for rain is all I can say!

  7. I'm looking forward to enjoying some rain, and by enjoying it I mean getting out there in my wellies and raincoat, with an umbrella to hand, sitting in the shelter sipping hot drinks.  After all, that's how sun-worshipers "enjoy" hot sunshine isn't it, slathered in sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses on, sitting in the shade during the hottest part of the day.

Eww the forecast for next week keeps on being downgraded to oblivion. Literally the only decent sunshine were gonna have for the foreseeable is a few hours this morning until those diabolical grey skies take charge. And to think, some people were wishing those beautiful blue skies away lol. Can't comprehend how people enjoy a dismal day of grey grot and no sunshine.

Couldn't give a stuff about sunshine, it's rain I'm looking for, and for the heat to stay away.  The last couple of days have been a big relief and personally I hope we continue into autumn in the same vein, with some much-needed rain thrown in too.

I now get excited when I see an overcast sky.  Sadly despite the clouds today, the sun manages to peep through.  All I want is dull day with no sight of the sun and hours and hours of light to moderate rain fall.

You and me both!  There's nothing better than a nice drizzly day with overcast skies and a fresh breeze.  I've had enough "warm sunshine" to last me a lifetime.

Enjoy this weather whilst we still have it.

Yes let us all put considerations of health, comfort and liveability (and sleep!) and just enjoy the heat! Silly me, that's where I've been going wrong all this time! d'oh!  And as for my elderly parents who have really been struggling in this current spell, well if they'd only just enjoy it, well there you go eh?

Seriously, why don't you realise we don't all like heat and will never "enjoy it"?

  11. Wow this spell has been draining!  In many ways it's worse than the July heatwave.  I don't know why but it's seemed even hotter to me than the extreme heat of last month.  Probably due to the protracted nature of this heatwave, maybe higher humidity, or maybe it's just because my already limited tolerance of heat is now at breaking point.

    Roll on next week!

How else would you forecast plenty of sunshine when that is what is forecast? 'Large quantities' of sunshine? 'Considerable amounts' of sunshine? It's neither a positive or negative way of presenting... it's just stating what it is.

We're at a new societal low if we're having problems with the Met Office presenting sunshine and warmth... in summer! 🤣

They could use more neutral language, such as "it will be a hot and sunnu day today".  Also, do they ever use ohrases like "plenty of rain on offer" or "plenty of snow for all"?  No, exactly.

"Best summer" is such an objective term.

While the press still report on hot and sunny weather and prolonged periods of it as a super positive thing that involves beach days and fun, no one will ever take the changes to climate seriously. "It's just a few nice days, get over it" says Margaret, standing in the 7 extra inches of water that was once the front room of her sea side town house.

It's not just the press.  The Met Office also have a habit of presenting warm weather as good by default; "plenty of warm sunshine for all", "more warm sunshine" and "plenty of warm sunshine on offer" are all examples of forecast summaries on the MetO website in recent summers.
