  1. Here we go -the amber warning is out and includes the westernmost tip of Pembrokeshire. Meanwhile, the projected gusts for my area don't even reach 40 mph now, even Milford Haven is supposed to get no more than 49 mph. Will be interesting to see how this pans out and if the machine will beat human on this occasion!?! Not much surprise too seeing a yellow rain warning for the north for Thursday which was my major concern all the while. Last nights rain took me by surprise though, producing 25.2 mm with me sleeping trough it. But even so, my total for the month is still 16 mm below my IMBY 20 year average of 186 mm but chances are it may be reached overnight. Stay safe all!
  2. The updated warning may have brought me into the warning area but all the computer output has in store for my area is a brief period of up to 44 mph early Thursday morning and Saturday's low even less, not surprising considering the southerly track hitting France and Spain for a change. Rain may be more of an issue at that rate. Have a very happy and meaningful Calan Gaeaf/Halloween all!!!
  3. I'm amazed it's only a yellow but I guess it's because it is still four days out from today and details can change by then. Given that currently the various models are pretty much in agreement of the track I'm quite sure it will be turning into at least an amber warning either tomorrow or Tuesday. Feel relieved to hopefully be spared the worst myself but sorry for all those in it's path. Hopefully our village bonfire night on Friday will go ahead before the next deep low rattles in. Will be interesting to see how low the barometer will fall.
  4. What a difference a day (or even two!) makes! Us northerners are extremely lucky today to be bathed in very welcome sunshine with barely a cloud in the sky. Pretty chilly start though with about 5 C but in the absence of wind it now feels really pleasant. River levels have a good chance to go down as well before the return of the next batch of rain, especially so towards next weekend. This is for Friday: Have a good Sunday all!!
  5. Fancy that! Doesn't the dark red patch very much align with where badly affected Chesterfield is located? From all the reports available I'm actually surprised that it doesn't show the 100 mm + bracket. I'm grateful to have had just a fairly mediocre rainy day here. No doubt our turn will come before too long!
  6. Not often that you see such a huge area marked in red, indicating 50 to 100 mm of rain during today. It's been steady here since morning but not overly heavy most time. Wind getting up so some extent after an almost calm early start. Managed to get the dogs out during a brief let up just after 11 am. i wonder to what extent El Nino (and other global drivers) can be held responsible for such an unusual set up. One can only feel sorry for the poor souls up in Alba, that part is normally blessed with the protection by the Cairngorms from the wild westerlies, only to see disaster strike from the east. So, the blessing of the mountains turns into it's curse!
  7. Well, MetOficce have been busy issuing yellow warnings of rain, one of which running from Wednesday 21 UTC to Saturday 6 UTC, luckily not for Wales - at least not yet as details as to affected areas can easily and quickly change. Also got our second named storm Babet, presumably due to the sheer duration as fronts run against the higher Scandi pressure and align themselves parallel to the tightly packed isobars and grind to a halt over eastern Britain. So, make the most of today, folks and enjoy the hazy sunshine while it lasts!! Storm Babet has been named WWW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK Storm Babet will bring impactful rain across parts of the UK.
  8. Wow, that's some total, and for once it's not up here! Glad to hear your kitchen remained dry!!
  9. This chart mirrors the 24 hour totals to 6 UTC pretty well with the highest to the south of Eryri: 38.2 mm at Milford Haven and 37.2 for Milford Haven and 32.2 at Mumbles. By contrast, Capel Curig managed just 12 mm in the same period while my own rain gauge produced 16.5 mm. Looks like the end is nigh at least up here with the MetO output showing just 20 % chance of rain by 12 UTC and sunny spells by mid afternoon, so doggies can wait a little while longer before heading out.
  10. Pretty wet outlook for tomorrow, might even outdo Friday's rain in places. Thereafter I'd better get thicker socks and jumpers out with nighttime temperatures expected to go down into low single figures to start the new week. Brrrrhh!!! But light winds and sunny spells under high pressure will make up for it by day!! Good time for a decent hill walk!!
  11. What an atrocious outlook for Friday, suggesting in excess of 100 mm over the highest tops in Eryri and an utterly miserable day for all mortals living below! The rain gauges at Cwm Dyli, Capel Curig etc will be working overtime!!
  12. Yes, lovely late 'summer' day here as well - got three loads of washing done which dried in no time in the sunshine and with the help of a brisk warm breeze at times, just like in, you know, summer!! Here it's just flies that seem to have considerably increased in numbers again, have to keep uneaten cat food under cover to save it from being spoiled. Talking of flying things, watching a couple of red admirals gave me great joy this morning.
  13. I must admit that after an overcast morning with low cloud and strong winds I didn't expect the afternoon to turn so bright with hazy sunshine at times. The max temp of 17 C is just about what the MetO output had forecast, feeling rather pleasant, especially as the winds eased too. One can only feel sorry for the Scots with that enormous rain up there, 71mm at Glasgow in the 24 hours to 18 UTC! But then, they were rather left out when southern and central Britain were plagued by low after low after low for weeks on end which shows that everything evens out again eventually. Might that then also apply to the current and recent abnormally high temperatures turning into a cracking cold spell as we head towards winter, I wonder???
  14. Makes absolute sense that rainfall totals should be highest close to the highest peak(s) on the side of the main wind direction. Where moist air runs against a mountain range it is forced to rise leading to higher rain intensity. I tend to compare it to throwing or pressing a wet sponge against a wall. Sadly, there is no weather station at the summit of Yr Wyddfa which would undoubtedly produce some eye watering sums.
  15. At least it has dried up here now with diffuse sunshine peaking through now and then. MetO output seems to be pretty optimistic for the weekend. We'll have to wait and see where the ever rolling dice end up. SW'ly S/SE'ly
  16. What a soggy end to September that was , 42 mm of rain at Lake Vyrnwy and 19 mm in my own back garden, racking up 214 mm here for the whole month. Yet, at the same time the weirdly warm theme continues, even into next weekend which to me looks like a repeat of the one just gone. All this warm moist air can bring from the SW is could and with it outbreaks of rain/drizzle, especially so on the windward side of the mountains. Further east the benefits may well be felt (and enjoyed) at times but here I would expect slugs and other moisture loving creatures having a fun time in my garden.
  17. Storm Agnes turned out to be just another ordinary low pressure system round here too. Yes, trees were shaking wildly at times but my own weather station never got beyond 39 mph, considered it registered 47 mph on Monday. Even the (heavier) rain was comparatively short lived and did return just 11 mm in 24 hours, quite ordinary really for the time of year. Top gust were 84 mph at Capel Curig and 68 mph at Aberdaron, again nothing that I haven't seen multiple times before. Guess Agnes had reached the peak of it's development early on Wednesday and already filled in on the way past?! No complaints from me though as the one thing i can do without is storms.
  18. Well, check up went well with no issues, just an adjustment of medication to eliminate unwanted side effects. Still pretty strong and sudden gusts here but nothing extraordinary. Heavy rain didn't last too long either. Capel Curig has finally caught up with 80 mph gusts, Aberdaron 66mph and Mumbles 65 mph. Looking forward to some decent weather on Friday.
  19. Yes, it has kicked off here about 15 minutes ago, really heavy downpour with clouds right down and very wild winds, which is what is no less than what I would have expected. Milford Haven now at 60 mph, Aberdaron 57 mph.
  20. Yes, I have been watching this squall line coming my way. Gusts are forecast to peak about 18.00/19.00 hours for me, perhaps it comes a bit earlier. So far, Agnes has not been as bad as it originally looked. Hope i don't have to swallow my own words!
  21. Thank you very much - luckily it was caught early on and amazingly treated within two months, (on the NHS, mind!) so should be fine! Some insanely warm air with 15C+ uppers projected by ECMWF to flood into Wales and beyond at the end of the 00Z run. Will of course be tempered down by a fair bit of cloud, being maritime air all the way from the subtropical Atlantic. Have only just put my beach towel away!
  22. I do recall seeing 138 kph out in the Irish Sea before, so hopefully my wife will get safely to her post-cancer examination at Landudno hospital and back home again this afternoon. Heavy rain just starting here but got dogs out well before. Keep safe, all!!
  23. Yes, it was a joy to watch a Wales team displaying determination, team spirit and skill - may it continue through the rest of the tournament and beyond!!
  24. Can't say I'm looking forward to Wednesday's deep low, in fact I'm somewhat worried about my roof tiles staying where they are now. MetO output for my area has now made it to 58 mph top gusts which might yet increase?? The only consolation is that, with the centre moving fast, the worst spell looks to be fairly short lived so that by the time I bed down I will at least know whether or not I need to phone the roofer in the morning.
  25. Wow, that's a lot, even by Eryri/Snowdonia standards, in such a short time. Sorry to hear about your troubles, hope you haven't suffered any severe losses!
