  1. I remember Peter Cockcroft's countryfile forecast on 21st November 1993 - and he underestimated the snow that was (or was'nt) forecast at times for the Midlands.

    His forecast for Tuesday 23rd, mentioned 'more sleet and snow in the east, perhaps with hail and thunder' (did thundery activity occur - does anyone hold any records?), as exceptionally cold air triggered convection over the North Sea.

    He seemed to miss the Atlantic front, that swept in later on 24th, bringing us a decent snowfall - although it did weaken further north and east.

    December 1993 was remarkably mixed here, with some very mild days interspersed with short cold snaps and some snow around mid-month. There were also severe gales on the 15th. Snow also settled well on 27th.

    I recall a mild and changeable January 1994, followed by a very cold second half of Feb, with 2 or 3 heavy snowfalls. I remember March 1994 as being very windy, and April as being cold and showery in the first half - with a thunderstorm on the 9th, producing hail and snow!

  2. My concern for the garden over the Winter months is the rain.  I'm almost exclusively into food crops - at the moment in a 15' x 20' raised garden reclaimed from lawn a year ago. (I'm live in a victorian terrace house - rented)  My concern over the Winter period is the heavy leaching from rain on bare soil - ie washing out a lot of 'goodness' effort put into it over the summer.  I tried mustard last year, which is generally recomended, and also alfalfa (both of which I got from a wholefood shop).  Well, the mustard flowered very early (it was probably rape), far too early to dig in.  I left it over the Winter.  Not very impressive come the spring.  However the alfalfa had died over the Winter (as might expect), but the work it had done on the soil structure was very impressive.  Alfalfa is supposed to be excellent at bringing up nutrient from very deep roots.  I've heard similar for red clover.  I'm planning to sow with red clover this year.  This operation makes a lot of sense I think.  Where can I get red clover seed?

    I'm not too sure, but try the classified section of gardening magazines - and look for green manure ads. Meanwhile, I'll try and find a supplier for you. :blink:

  9. Hi BB, you could use this code:

    [url=http://www.net-weather.co.uk/forum/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=69&]My blog[/url]

    That would display - my blog as a link to your blog, you can of course change the working to whatever you like.

    Clicking the BB code help link on the posting screen gives some good hints on how to use the various code options on here http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif

    Thanx...I 'll give it a go!

    Edit: Success. :) Thanks again.

  10. :) Here goes!

    After an exceptionally warm October in England and Wales, and very wet in the north and west, what does November have to offer us all?

    In general, I'm going for a month that is looking like this:

    Rainfall: Wetter than average in the north, and south-west. Drier than average in the south-east.

    Sunshine: Sunnier than average in the west, duller than average in the north-east.

    Temperatures: Overall rather above average, near average in the far north and north-west.

    The month should begin fairly dry for most, especially in the south and east with some night and morning fog around. Wet at times in the north-west. Around the 6th- 9th, wetter for all, with stronger winds - and some persistant rain in the W and SW. Still on the mild side, with little or no frost. From the 10th -14th, a colder west to northwesterly influence with bands of showers, most prevalent in areas exposed to this wind direction. Some night frosts in the inland north. More wet spells by mid-month in the SW in particular, but more settled and chilly in the north with night frosts. Around the 18th- 22nd, a northeasterly pattern developing, with more widespread night frosts, along with patchy fog in the sunnier west. More eastern parts seeing the first wintry showers, with snow accumulating - especially on the Yorks/ Lincs hills and the Pennines. From 23rd- 26th, turning less cold - but still dull and perhaps wintry in the north-east. Becoming wet and windy in the south-west, then west, but milder. The closing days of the monh see mild southerlies establishing or most parts, with most of the wind and rain in the west or north-west.
