We have elections in this country and a very small minority would share such left-wing thinking... (in terms of ‘redistribution of wealth’).

I do think we need improvements with the transport sector for example but the government need to provide funding to facilitate this.

Where I work, 50 miles from my house, only got 3G in early 2018 i’m led to believe.

So what chance is there of me switching to a hybrid/electric vehicle (given I do north of 22,000 miles a year in my car)? There are no charging points. There just isn’t the infrastructure.

Even if I didn’t work shifts, public transport is almost non-existent.

Rant over. I suppose the point i’m making here is because I do feel guilty a bit but there’s no solution for me as someone trying to save up 20/25k for a deposit for a tiny house in Edinburgh... I can’t spend 10k on a ‘green’ car. I thought when i bought my diesel that was quite ‘green’ at that time....

But it’s very nice of Greta to blame me. She has lots of experience of the real world at the grand old age of 16.

Which, to me, illustrates why its a problem and why planetary degradation has only just begun. Because for must of us it is impossible to change.  But, there are consequences of that impossibility we, you me all of us, will face - and costs greater than the impossible ones you me and the rest face now.

What price is the environment? What future do we want? We've chosen to take a chance, to ignore the warning and implications of rock solid science and evidence. In a way I don't mind (what can one man do?)  though I still object to people wrecking MY planet because they have 'no option' other than to do so.

Blaming the younger generation is just pure ignorance as you mention. The young live in the world that the previous generations constructed, they have no choice.

The other factor that is often ignored now is how much more efficient things are. The lighting in our house for example is all LED, each bulb using no more than 14w compared to the 60-100w light bulbs previous generations might have used. There's also the fact that white goods in general use a lot less now than a lot then. The younger generation might have more in the way of technology now, but how does a smartphone consuming 2 watts compare to a record player in the past for example? I would not be surprised if younger people now use much less electricity than previous generations.

    Yes, some interesting points.

I believe the power of vacuum cleaners is considerable less than in the past, for the same cleaning power. I guess it's technological advance.

Undoubtedly, though, people fly more than they did when I was a child - but again children are being taken on flights not taking their parents.

The average uk house uses less and less energy every year.

    'Positive changes' eh?

How about the deconstruction of the global economic model that brought us beyond the precipice?

It WILL occur but sadly only once the first big 'Black Swan' hits home and folk finally have their 'fight or flight' response triggered?

Sad that ,as we evolve as a species, we have not 'updated' the threats we respond to? Now we can peep into our immediate future the sight of such potential doom should have us all clamouring for change but 'no' , here we sit , our hands firmly placed below our bums!

The 'Economist' tells us 1/3 rd of 'Global Capital' is absent..... just not their, vamoosed , gone

1/3 rd is hidden in offshore accounts and of the final 1/3 rd , which we use to run our world, 80% is in the hands of the richest 10% of Global Population.......

Again , nothing from the People.

It's as if they do not care and happily buy into the 'No Money Trees' philosophy if it means they can continue 'hand sitting'?

There is a bloody rainforrest of Money trees out there & that money could save so much of our World now doomed by 'Their' action and compounded by 'Our' innaction?

Positive changes to change our world?

Play 'Them' at 'Their' own game,

    Beat 'Them'

Smash the game so it can never be played again!!!

    Avante!

A bit of political deja vu there GW

    Greta Thunberg Wants You Afraid.

    https://www.rt.com/news/469534-greta-thunberg-fear-business/

We should be afraid of our changing climate, but we should also be afraid of zealots with good intentions.

[ I disagree. WHY should we be afraid of changing climate? Climate is always changing. Climate is most affected by the Sun, latitude, the tilt f the eart's axis, movements in the Earth's wind belts, the difference in temperatures of land and sea, and topography.

And that's the basics never talked about the narrow minded scientific bias is unbelievable when it comes to climate change full stop.

Can you provide a reference I can read to support your view? If, that is, you don't think something else might be at play atm...

My bad, 16 it is then.

I dunno, I just can't bring myself to hate her.

What are you trying to say about me? I laugh a lot a climate sceptics, extremists, and comedy I like.

Perhaps you've learnt from your Australian commentator that when you don't like the evidence people present you attack the people presenting it?

Always be aware of tu quoque...

Sneering at people because of what they say wont change whether they are right or wrong. Nor does it provide solutions. Especially as the man doing the sneering doesn't have the faintest intention of doing anything himself bar sneer (or indeed, I'd guess) accept the reality of what is going on...

Otoh, I guess if we blame everyone bar ourselves things will be ok.....

Most sane video on MSM radio I`ve seen.

It starts with a clearly biased spinning of what the protestors are saying ('we're all going to die in 11 years' - no, they're not saying that...) and then O'Neil is talking about 'fundamentalist cults'.  Further insults and abuse follows, plenty of 'whataboutism' too. Indeed, I'm now five minutes in and it's more like two right wing blokes ranting on...Now they're ad homming Thunberg, sigh...

There was zero, absolutely zero, discussion of the evidence. data and observations - that would interfere with the political message talk radio and O'Neil are pushing. As to 'positive steps we can take to help the planet'? Zero.

I haven't bothered with any more of their bias and propaganda.

It always amuses me as someone living in a draughty cold old farmhouse why people want to walk around their homes in winter in shorts with their heating systems maintaining a high temperature.I wear wool jerseys and thermals in the winter to keep warm in the huse as trying to keep the whole house warm would be an astronomical cost.. We have open fires but they are all in the gable ends of the house  so 50% of the heat goes out through the wall. No thought for energy conservation given when this house was built as there was a maid then who kept 10 open fires going most of the day even in the bedrooms.

I should have added earlier that I've moved to wearing more wool clothing. I bought some pure wool socks and they are, compared to cotton or plastic, absolutely fantastic. I will, however, have to learn how to darn...

I visit the elderly every few days. My mother who is 103 and hasn’t a clue who I am. She recognises her parents and grandparents in photos but not my father nor me

I do ponder what is the point of life going on for so long.  I find it extremely upsetting. Now off to pay the care home fees at a rate of £1,000 per week. As my mother was very prudent and held back buying much for herself she has some savings meaning no benefits. Seems she should have spent them on herself instead of saying there will be a little financial help for the grand children. They certainly need help.

    I hear/get you/it.

My view is that Climate Change fervour is similar in nature to Malthusianism and Marxist/Socialist tyrrany and that there are things that can be done to improve lives locally in ones own small area. If you want to save lives - visit the elderly, speak to them, give them time and respect - loneliness leads to illness which hastens death. To really care about people as individuals rather than humanity in general demands a lot more in terms of time, effort and sacrifice. But no group needs our help, time, company and efforts more than the elderly

Well, perhaps you should know I live with (and increasingly care for) my parents who are both well into their eighties!

AND, I am deeply concerned about what is happening to our planet. I follow the evidence (eg), I'm not part of a fraud, or a ponzi scheme or a communist/marxist, or a 'woke', or trying to start a tyranny, or seeking to imprison people and reeducate them. The evidence (about climate change, about species and habitat decline and loss), is (and I've thought about this for myself) is solid, all around us and frankly impossible to ignore.

And on the positive lifestyle front? My car is ten years old, has done 110K @ more than 50mpg, I last flew in the 90s, I have a bike I use when I can, i shop locally, I try to reduce plastic usage, I try not to sneer at people doing their best and I'm a member of various pressure groups (not of the party affiliations you've mentioned) but which I wont name for fear of reprisals.

I am what they call a 'Binary' sort of fellow. But I find it amusing that someone not subscribing to the lunacies of the last few years could be so far off the PC/Woke message that folks think its a wind-up - hahahaha

Sorry, I'm still none the wiser about what you mean by 'woke'. is it a compliment or an insult?

  14. 5 minutes ago, nwextremeweather said:

The general view seems to be that 'young' is good and correct while 'old' is bad, blameworthy and wrong.

This is typical marxist/socialist thinking. That the world belongs to the young and that the young have all the answers and need to re-educate the old accordingly

Is it? Well, you've lost me again I'm afraid. I see no such general view.

Btw are your posts serious or wind ups?

As we see time and again. Those who claim to be greatly moved in the cause of humanity in general, are almost always found to be wanting when it comes to dealings with humans individually.

It would be far more encouraging if these kids - instead of being taught to show disrepect for the old - would instead be encouraged to pay visits to the elderly a great many of whom lead lives of suffering and great loneliness. They may also learn more useful ideas than the brainwashing that counts for education in schools these days

You've lost me, how are they being 'taught to show disrespect for the old' and by who? And what is a 'woke'?

Indeed, it's a really poor article as they haven't even bothered looking at the sea ice extent. When looking at that it's not surprising ships in the area ran into trouble.

As Paul says, better navigation skills are perhaps needed and doesn't detract from the fact that arctic sea ice extent is yet again seeing a minimum that is much below average.

Oops, you're too fast for me

Yes it is strange  why they wouldnt prepare better   slightly Ironic  that they went to see the damage climate change is doing   then needed to be rescued by 3 helicopters  which helps create climate change  funny world.

I suggest we look at the current extent maps. All over the Arctic sea ice has shrunk way back from the normal extent EXCEPT for a tiny area around the east coast of Spitzbergen where there is indeed more ice than usual.

    Amazing.

Kinda surprising to me how often links and discussions appear on the worst climate denier blogs on the internet, and then appear on here only a few hours later from users that claim not to be climate change deniers
I'm sure this time, like many others, it's only a coincidence that the current article in questions was posted on WUWT 10 hours ago, right?

    Yup, pure coincidence.

  20. I don't think the NAO is a cause of anything, it's a measure of pressure differential, it is something that happened. Is a cricketer doing well because of his high batting average? Nope.

Why does the NAO fluctuate? Because the pressure field across the N Atlantic fluctuates and taking a simply pressure difference between two point can be used to produce an index we call the NAO. Since it only has two points I think the NAO is a really crude measure. So the NAO index crudely reflects what the N Atlantic weather has been doing.

But, you can model what the state of the atmosphere in the N Atlantic will be and thus predict what the pressure differential between two points will be. Thus prediction of the NAO are simply another way of looking at what the computers are saying.
