Thanks for the info, maybe the beeb/metoffice are just covering themselves incase there is significant thundery activity, it seems the last few severe thunder events have schocked them into a state of alertness, before they were very reluctant to mention thundery activity, now they tend to forecast it quite well. Theaccuracy of the beeb has certainly improved, they almost got it completely correct today except the showers werent/arent so widespread. Joe

indeed, the strongest convection was in an SE/NW oriented line, and still is although moving slowly east, it really took off suddenly, i guess as the convergence set up, the storm cells developed right overheadwithin about 20 minutes! Very dark to my east as new cells set up on the convergence line south of the first one, milky skies everywhere else. Joe

Here in harold hill weve just had a storm of HERCULEAN proportions, seiriously, superlatives simply cannot describe what it was like. Convection had been going for an hour or two when at about 2:45 the updrafts around just burst into the sky, you could see themmoving, absolutely rocketing!! Then it turned grey overhead as an area of capped convection moved over giving us light rain, then behind it dark bases came into view with solid rainshafts, then as soon as it had all began absolutely torrential rain began with huge drops, this then cleared but within minutes, another dark base area appeared, torrential rain real really wound up, almost as insane as last may! A really loud boom of thunder followed, followed a fem minutes later by an absolutely deafanning crack, i was siiting it out in my school office with my mates, and we thought it was a door slamming!! Several distant rumbles followed, but the rain carried on gettingheavier and heavier, my grandad came to give me a lift hom from school and i got saoking west just stepping the few metres to the car!!! Words cannot describe it! as the back end of the storm appraocehd mental outflow winds began blasting from the NE, in the opposite direction to the wind before I The school carpark and feild were at least 1ft deep in water, and were half wayup a hill!! Grandad said the whole A127 was flooded, and soon we saw a fire engine haeding for the M25, so must be a ansty accident. Through hraold wood and Ardeleigh green Water was over 1ft deep in places and several cars are stuck, soon the rain cleared and were left with an overhanging updraft sheild, with some strong convection pushing up into the Rear, which stretches across the Eastern horrizon and is jet balck!!! sadly i have no camera battereis Canstill hear the odd distant boom. Although lighting activity wasnt as severe or as frequent as last mays storm (when we had almost constant G-Cs and even heavier rain, this storm was pretty damn impressive!! Joe

My siset just got back from the stables (next to the river roading and right next to the m25 between the A12 and M11 near stapleford airfirld, she said they had a violent 10 minute thunderstorm, with cracks of thunder and visisble C-C lightning arcing across the sky, this is about 5 miles away but here we have had no thunder or rain at all, however the builiding congestsus could be seen as well as dark basesas it moves off to the NE. N/S oriented line of congestus hasbeen pushing hard into the sky for an hour or so now out to my west, since I last looked itesgained height and nowhas a very dark base, almost jet black. Visibility has been very goodtoday despite the humid condidtions, and these towers are clearly seen and have crisp cauliflower shapes, and i think one is forming an anvil now. Joe

I tend to use the detectors as an indicator as to if theyre is lightning about, but not where, they tend to be very good at showing the strike rates but not so good at showing the posistion. What we need is a system like that in the USA, where they have a system that can show lightning happening in real timeon a map, and they can pinpoint the lightning to within a few hundred yards, and its in real time! I guess they do this by triangulating the sensors or connecting them together in one larege network, and this gives much much better accuracy, similar to the system that netweather uses except it all comes up in real time i think. Ive just been told by my dad that there was distant booming thunder to our south about and hour ago, i noticed some very dark bases but i thoughtit was aircraft, i couldnt see the tops of thses cluds but my dad has confirmed that there was thunder coming from it a few miles to our south. Its all cleared southwards now anyway. Joe

Looking in your direction i cant see much in the way of convection, however, over to my immediate south west there is a high based cell which is quite dark grey, and has some weak mammatus under its low topped anvil, so this must be what you are seeing, i am roughly West-North-West of you. Convection seems well capped though, the cell that produced the thunder earlier musthave broken this cap, the rest of the convection seen today is just spreading into a stratus layer at mid levels. Although theres nothing on radar the past hour and a half weve had several 'dry' thunderstorms move through here! Thyre moving quite fast and i cant see convection as its all embedded in stratus cloud, aound 2:00pm there were some dark bases around and theyve been producing rumbles since then, the bases are getting larger and darker but still no precip,it has become noticably more humid also.
