  1. But still not much registerable e/q activity. Events too minor to register on seismographs, even though they might indicate increased activity at surface level?

What I find more interesting is the strange tremor pattern from godabunga, the seismic station closest to Katla.

I haven't a clue what they mean though but there just seems to have been a general increase in activity in the area so interesting to watch if anything does develop. It isn't unusual for Eyja to have a second eruptions relatively shortly after the first. Or it could be Katla clearing it's throat or it could even be someone playing around with powerful fireworks. The last supposition is fairly unlikely though as it is a very sparsely populated area.

  2. Further update to the explosions in Iceland

Update 1: This has been confirmed by more news media in Iceland. This also appears to have been going on all day. But the explosions today might have been at lower noise level during the day then happened tonight (this is unclear at the moment however). But also according to the news this explosions have been heard to Hvolsvöllur in the right wind direction (or a good weather?). This explosive booms have also been heard by other people in the area around Eyjafjallajökull volcano.

  3. An interesting report from Jon Friman's Icelandic blog http://www.jonfr.com/volcano/

A explosions heard from Eyjafjallajökull volcano

Posted on January 2, 2011 by Jón Frímann This time around, it appears my break is going to a shorter then I planned. According to the newspaper named DV (a short of tabloid in Iceland) there have been a lot of explosion heard from Eyjafjallajökull volcano. According to the news this started around 19:00 UTC, when exactly is unclear at present time.

This was reported by a local farmer in the area, how descrpes this as the same noise before it started to erupt there in April 2010. But according to Icelandic Met Office and the University of Iceland nothing special has appears on seismometers around Eyjafjallajökull volcano. But it is good to know that in the first eruption in Eyjafjallajökull volcano on Fimmvörðuháls it took few hours for the harmonic tremor to appear following that eruption. For now all that can be done is to wait and see what happens next. This might be a start of a new eruption, or this simply might be nothing for the moment.

  4. I do so hope that something changes in the weather soon, this dull mush is driving me bonkers!

Totally agree!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! :wallbash: going mad with boredom.

It looks set to get colder into the weekend, but it wont be as cold as we saw in the last cold snap & it doesn't look good for snow either.

Sounds like even more boredom then, :whistling: Ho hum, roll on summer.:fool:

  5. Another update today taken from Jon Friman on his Iceland blog.. http://www.jonfr.com/volcano/

A small ash plume over Eyjafjallajökull volcano today ?

Posted on December 28, 2010 by Jón Frímann

A few of my readers reported today in comments that they did see a small ash plume or something of that nature today over Eyjafjallajökull volcano. While I stress that this is still unconfirmed at this stage it might well have happened.

There are two options that might explain what did happen today. One is that a ash was moving due to wind in the area. But this happens quite a lot during the dry times in the winter and summer. The second option is that a older magma from the eruption earlier this year was on the move and made a small eruption that did go unnoticed on the seismometers around Eyjafjallajökull volcano. I do not know how long this event in Eyjafjallajökull volcano today is supposed to have lasted. But it appears to have been for several hours in the longest.

But other then this it appears that Eyjafjallajökull volcano is mostly quiet. But some deep earthquakes have started again in the past few weeks. But so far they have not been increasing in numbers so a new eruption is not expected at this time by me or the experts.

With the following screenshot you can make up your own mind, cloud, ask or steam?

  6. Been up to 6C here today (& still 6C now). Be nice to get the rain to wash all the salt/grit off the roads (& wash the car)...

Ah for once I beat you to the high temperature. Had a max of 6.1C here so just shaved it by .1C.

Currently 5.8C, might have to open the bedroom window tonight or else I wont sleep as it is 20.9C with the radiater switched off! Sometimes well insulated houses have problems of their own.

  7. Low of -2C here overnight, but already up tp 4C, the end of the cold snap is here...

Hi SSC, as usual you have the misfortune of living is such a warm spot I wonder if you are planning a bbq for the new year. 8)

Here it was a minimum of 5C overnight and is now currently 3.7C but feels a lot colder. Unusually we have totally calm conditions, somewhat rare for CHIMET to be showing 0.0 knot with a gust of 0.2 knot . WOW exciting!

  8. Of course that is just their guess as to what may happen, with a large dose of wishful thinking thrown in too... :whistling:

I like the wishful thinking and will carry on wishing but will keep your realistic attitude SSC and remind myself it is at the moment just wishful thinking. Far to FI to get excited yet.

However.... I will be watching the charts closely when it comes into reliable time frame. For now I am far too busy to waste time chart watching.

  9. I'm new to all this so forgive me if I am missing something obvious but....

I thought we needed a min thickness of 528 to even stand a chance of getting snow? I have just looked at the fax charts for Monday and the dam line is nowhere near us, it is over near Scandinavia, so where is all this talk of snow from the west coming from and how could it come about given the set up?

    Hoops

You will soon learn hoops that a lot of wishful thinking goes on in these threads. Sunny South Coast knows well that to suggest something could be rain rather than snow almost amounts to sacrilege and some like to bury their heads in the sand and hope against reason that what they wish will be fulfilled. I must say it doesn't often happen on the CS thread but some of the regional ones can become a bit of a bears den at time.

You are correct, unless the models change by Monday there is no chance of anything but rain.

  10. It has been a bitterly cold day today. The Max temp was 3.1C and currently 2.5 but with a F6 wind gusting F7 N/NE wind it has felt evil today. One gent down town (and not that old either) had a very balding head with very short cropped hair and was heard to remark, "That wind is giving me really bad pains in my head." So tempting to tell him to buy a wooly hat! :whistling:

Off now to look what Monday's possible event is all about.

  11. Not always, yesterday it was below 3 closed ones! nonono.gif I had to resuscitate it!

Usual garb, snow still on ground, bear does its business in the woods and the Pope is indeed Catholic. Oh, and my temp is 30.0F (a toasty -1.1C), 87% humidity and 1007mb of pressure. Happy days. drinks.gif

And my temp is o.3C (positively tropical) 91% humidity (disgusting to be that high when it isn't snowing or even, dare I say it, raining) and 1004mb pressure.

Were having a heatwave, a tropical heatwave.

Oh and thank you for giving your kiss of life to the thread. Why is our thread shown as a pinky colour when the others have sort of orangey colour on the file? Perhaps we should post more, i would hate to be amalgamated with the whinging SE thread.

  12. Hi all, had to come out of retirement as I saw some snow today when I went out on the bus, just passed the northern limit of Bognor and there was the snow lying. Not a lot but enough to satisfy when I expected to see green fields all the way to Havant. Looks like it was only 2 miles from the coast lost all it's snow.

As for the blob of precipitation over France I would say there is very little chance of that coming ashore anywhere West of Eastbourne. Even if it did get to Bognor would only be rain as my temp is currently 2C with a max of 4C today.

    What does BFTE mean please?

    cheers

I forget who coined the term on here but it was definitely Beast From The East.

  13. There appears to be no snow forecast for Bognor for at least a fortnight, wonder if that will be the case or if after a week things may change. Sad to see the snow gone and if it was warm I wouldn't mind so much but it is really cold outside. In fact it feels colder at 1.5C because of the dampness than it did at a few degrees below that when it was dry. Ah well such is life. :cray:

Be back when we get another chance of snow. IF we do.

  14. Will Eyja erupt again?

Inflation starts again in Eyjafjallajökull volcano

Posted on December 21, 2010 by Jón Frímann After a few months of a period of stability in Eyjafjallajökull volcano after the eruption ended on the 28th of May 2010. There seems to be more instability starting again in Eyjafjallajökull volcano. This instability can so far only be seen on GPS sensors around the volcano. So far the inflation that is starting at medium rate, about 5mm on every 24 hours or so. This is clear when a early results (not error corrected) are checked from Icelandic Met Office GPS network. The trigger for the current instability appears to be a sharp deflation that took place in Eyjafjallajökull volcano few days ago.

Picture is from Icelandic Met Office, copyright of this picture belongs to them. Click on the picture for higher resolution.

Automatic GPS data from 21st of December 2010. The GPS station name is THEY and is on the south slope of Eyjafjallajökull volcano. The sharp deflation appears clearly on the GPS automatic data (not error corrected) and is followed by a sharp inflation period that is currently ongoing.

It currently remains unclear if this inflation period in Eyjafjallajökull volcano is going to continue. At current time the inflation in Eyjafjallajökull volcano is going to continue. It is also clear that today Eyjafjallajökull volcano is few weeks from re-starting the eruption, as it has not inflated enough to do so. But what is unclear is if this inflation and inflow of new magma under Eyjafjallajökull volcano is going to move around older magma that currently is higher up in the Eyjafjallajökull volcano plumbing after the eruption started earlier this year. For the moment the only that can be done is to wait and see what happens next.

  15. Ah yes but you would not see the tornado itself on the radar/satpic but there is usually a hook shape echo when and where one is involved. Actually the more I look at that image it reminds me of the masked idot from Scream the movie! :shok::diablo::rofl:

I obviously hope that is not the case but that image certainly looks strange over Alderney? Where's Paul Sherman, he's the expert on these things. :whistling:

Certainly it looks like an active squall which could equally include some thunder and lightning (they are lovely beasts actually)

    Kind Regards

    gottolovethisweather

Mmmmm Thunder and Lightning, next best thing to snow.! That precip seems to be moving pretty slowly. Too slowly I need my sleep.

  16. I tell you what I said expect surprises in just a few hours and whatever that is in the channel has surprised me. Where did it come from, Where is heading to and looking at that vivious curling motion (a hook echo?) over Brest (!) area is it, could that be packing a tornado or something?

    Cheers

    gottolovethisweather

That is a pretty amazing radar picture I agree, bit big for a tornado I hope. Looked more like a hurricane to me, much more pleasant. I want to wait up and see what it is but I also want to sleep. Noseyness will be the death of me.

I like the cooking tip! I used to work in IT and once we got a batch of dodgy hard drives in, we used to put them in the fridge for 24 hours and it used to work!

My son is doing an engineering course but don't know if he learnt the tip at uni or more likely off a computer forum somewhere.

  17. Well I am classed as inland (Waterlooville) and I still got a shedload of rain today. TBH, I had my fill of snow over the last few days and although I'd love to see more, I don't mind a few days of slightly milder weather while we get Xmas sorted!

It is nice to walk without straining every muscle in the body just to keep in a vertical position I must admit. And yes, we have a whole winter ahead of us yet so what is a few days mild. :aggressive:

  18. +0.7/0.1dp here. Light E drift. The small area of rotation off Cherbourg has tightened nicely, throwing a curved band of ppn ENE towards the IOW and W Sussex coast.

Once inland this should have no problem with delivering snow from Petersfield across to Horsham and north. Coastal areas still suffering from the mix-out of earlier - for now!

Oh how I am begining to dislike that word, inland. I reckon it should be reclassified as a rude word. :girl_devil: Apologies to everyone living inland and do ignore my jealousy and enjoy your snow.

  19. Arh cool baking the laptop great idea..think if I put my phone into the oven that would work too....so annoying my texts and calls not getting through!

    it better be the network......

Any how...I think we wont be having snow and it will be rain and it really annoyed me on the news tonight where they talk about the bands of ppn coming through the channel giving more snow inland.....yes INLAND..! I noticed though they didnt even mention what it would fall as on the coast... just beause there is snow eslewhere doesnt mean you forget other types of weather elsewhere.. rain does exist for some..........:aggressive:

ooh sorry about that bit of a rant! it wasnt at you - I was just being insensed by media coverage .. maybe I need to go outside in the freezer or BIG freeze to calm down.....oh but I cant because the temps here arent freezing!! ....:whistling:

Thankfully it wasn't the laptop he put in the oven! just the graphics card which he took out of the desktop computer. Even then he had to take the plastic parts off it. Please don't anyone do it unless they know what they are doing, i don't want to get sued! Anyway I am now having to use the not so good desktop computer as he has 'stolen' my laptop!!! Just because he couldn't bring his good computer home from Uni!

The temperature is slowly dropping here and is now 1.3C I am hoping (probably unreasonably) that if the precipitation is strong enough it could fall as snow. I know it is clutching at straws but I am so snow starved I was getting excited watching snow falling on my sons computer game. Sad or what!!! :unknw:
