I'll probably be dipping in and out of the work car all day, depending what carpark i've been sent to. If it's too bad, or looks to be too bad by Friday I might ask work if I can do the online training courses as the heat will probably trigger my breathing problems.

How bad are the overnight temperatures going to be? Alot of the focus is on the day record, i'm curious about how the models are handling overnight temps.

I agree. It's gonna be hard but we will get through it. Met Office app for Leeds is saying a min of 21ºC tonight. Ouch.

I know somewhere that still runs their a/c in heat mode. I've never seen it in cold mode.

Fans only blow hot air around have you really worked in the such temperatures you would know that. Also you don't need to be physical asserting your self to get ill. Extreme heat is not good for patients or nurses or Doctors or any worker. Just because something is hot doesn't mean it can't be corrected.
When smog killed people we got the clear air act.
If extreme becomes a regular event and there's enough deaths the government will be forced to act.
We may have to decide to disagree on what can and cannot be done.
Right back to models extreme heat shoved back to Sunday and Monday so we may see 40C on any of those days. It's crept a little nearer but still lala land.
Stuffy, hot air triggers breathing issues for me. Doesn't take much to set me off in a coughing fit or shortness of breath issues.

Portables are the more common units as the purchase price is cheaper. You need to put them below a window and poke a hose out of it though, that makes them draw air out of the house and it's replaced from elsewhere. I prefer to not seal the window up but I shut the door so i'm not drawing hot air in from the house, making the unit not worth the electric it consumes. They are loud too.
Mini split systems are possible but they have an outside unit with connections to power and the inside unit. Those require specialist fitting. You can have multiple indoor units one one outdoor unit. They will make sense if one still WFH and has an office, for example.
Ducted systems have an outdoor unit, an indoor unit somewhere like cellar or attic or both, with ducting of the chilled (or heated) air along with a filtered return for the air to be recirculated. I want to replace my gas boiler with such a system but that is very very pricey.

I have a portable a/c in my bedroom and 2KW solar on the roof. In this weather I can generate enough solar to run the a/c and a few other stuff for free.

Watching how it progresses next week on the runs. Really hope it doesn't happen. My elderly father says it's nothing and people will cope, get used to it.... grrrrr.

Evaporative coolers won't work well in the UK. They're designed to work well in dry climates. Ours is too humid.

What's the storm risk looking like with this upcoming spell of summer? I plan to leave both of the air con pipes in the window. If it dumps it down, it'll flood upstairs as although the window is secure, it doesn't seal around the hose bracket.

Painful and tiring as it may be, we do need the upcoming weather so we get the juicy storms and tasty stuff to eat later in the year. It also brings people out and makes the sites I cover happier as they make more money!
Also the intense sun will max out the solar and pay for the daytime air con use so there is that to look forward to. Heatwaves technically make me cool! I've ordered more Ibuprofen too, the headaches will probably come back. -

Feels warmer than that, felt worse than last Friday did. Also I work outside and have decent winter kit. Rain cold, snow, wind, etc doesn't bother me unless it's below about 3ºC as the air makes my breathing iffy.

Thing is, I do work outside in that weather. Never ill, I never suffer from feeling cold and I never get winter colds. Been working in this job for almost 8 years and the outdoor air in winter is lovely. Rain or shine.
This time of year I have to cover up due to burning easily, have a ton of strong anti migraine tablets as the sun can trigger migraines and my asthma plays up more. It's not so bad when undercover but in the open it's horrid.

I could, with being stuck out in it all day with no escape cover, food or drink when putting a turnstile in at a theme park. I definitelty pushed myself way too much for my job but stress has got me to the point where I just wanted to get the task done.
I'm stuck out in it for the rest of this week doing the back end/snagging list of upgrading a football stadium's turnstiles before a match on Friday. Yay, 12h day to end an exhausting week on! I do take a break in the car and run the a/c in it for lunch.
Yesterday was hard as I didn't sleep well and my feet/legs didn't want to work and I triggered a migraine too. Luckily I have air con at home and I just hide away in my ''season corrected'' room.-

I'm odd. I hate the UK heat and direct heat feel of the sun but if I cover myself up, it becomes tolerable for a hour or so when working outside.
The bigger problem - aside from heat triggered breathing issues is the house. Bricks are good at becoming a storage heater after a week or so of heat with no super low temps overnight. Once the house becomes 28ºC, it never cools. A/C to the rescue!
Dry heat is way more tolerable. I certainly won't forget how pleasant the Californian heat was after I landed in Heathrow and melted in the humid 29ºC coach terminal! -
Looking forward to the upcoming spell. I love making everyone confused by keeping the fleece and work jacket on.
I find it is often way more bearable if you block the sun from touching the skin. -
It's been lovely today here, still sunny and not too warm!
Curious as to the storms, is there a potential for Leeds tomorrow? I'm working at Elland Rd and don't wanna get drenched again. -
I agree too.
Something i've noticed at work is that quite a few colleagues will look forward to a hot summer heatwave with alot of enthusiasm and big it up, etc. Only when it turns up, they start moaning it's too hot to work outside! There's also customers which have lovely working air con that they never use or set correctly and still moan that it's too hot....-

Yeah it's night time when the storage heater effect becomes a pain. I usually keep the indoor temp to 23 or 24 overnight as that helps the breathing. Really happy with myself that the fixed deal gamble was worth it. I'm ususally not so lucky! I've also got solar too which on the sunny days will generate enough power to run the a/c without drawing from the grid.

I have a/c for 2 reasons. One being breathing problems and the other a 112ish year old terraced house that turns into a giant storage heater by July. Fortunately for me, I redid my electric and gas in 2020 with a 3 year fixed deal. Gonna feel it in Autumn 2023 when it's due but till then, i'm one of the few that won't get a shock.

I can *usually* cope outside, unless it's that overly stuffy pre storm weather or long periods of stillness with rising pollution as it triggers breathing issues..... I'd be a fish out of water gasping in Florida and other US states that get humid.

Starting to get gusty here in Bradford. Nowhere as nasty with what’s happening down south but time will tell as the storm moves out.
Working late today too so I won’t know what is happening or happened in East Leeds till after 10pm, aside from power outages when my power backup starts emailing.

I blame all the sensational Armageddon weather hype in the media for making the public not take actual events seriously. Even up here on the road I have food, drink, a battery bank, communication, means of making 240V power, clothing and enough battery lighting to keep me safe.

Quite a lot of my colleagues are saying it’s all hyped up and refuse to acknowledge the severity. No emails from work with regards to driving around doing jobs either…
I’m up here keeping an eye on how the day develops up here. It’s breezy but sunny and cold.
