so, if I've got it right, what we are looking at here, is either..
a) a slow thaw breakdown (which some experts on here think is being overplayed?)
b ) a medium dumping
c) a mega dumping
would that be right?
Just look how cold it is in Southern Sweden. Pity we dont look like tapping into this fully

Snow now eased off in Manselton (Swansea) - only very light at the moment - lets hope it picks up again. Temp now down to 0.6 deg when the snow arrived

What are the current temps with the areas that have got snow falling now? Current temp in lower Swansea valley is 1.1 deg - its been up and down all night - up to 1.1 now from a low of 0.3 at 7pm. Anyone have info on what the forecast Dew Points are ?
We had rain on swansea bay this morning before it turned to snow - dont want this strating off as rain again !!

Side roads in residential areas of Swansea tonight are absolutely trecherous !!. Beware - the snow of last night has not melted much in sheltered streets and with a layer of ice beneath it its extremely dangerous.
Temps now approaching freezing again with another hard frost looking likely unless we get a bit more PPN

Yes I think in future output we might see alot of disagreement on this thread in regards to what is an excellent or poor run. For me personally either a NE/ENE,ly usually does the trick for convection through the wash.
Its becoming bitterly cold in Southern Sweden right now ! If this heads "our" way (not so good for me in Wales) then what do you recon the temps on the East Coast may be after travelling over the North Sea ?

There's 2 fronts, the warm front which just passed giving us mainly rain/sleet (now stalled and weakening) and the more potent occlusion now moving in from the SW, which should be much more wintry. However I will believe it when I see it.
The Met Office do have a flash warning for heavy snow for much of the valleys so hopefully all hope is not yet lost.
Looking again at the radar, this second front appears to be fragmenting... is it possible it will envigorate as it approaches us ?
-
We need the heavier precipitation from the second front, the first was always going to be weak, but it has obviously been delayed by the cold air 'standing its ground'...
Looking at the radar - am I corect in thinking that the front has now stalled just south of Liverpool/Manchester. The latest loop does not extend the PPN any further north?
WelshSnowFan 4.1 deg and now starting to fall

snow level is down to here now, 100% heavy wet snow now
Which part of Swansea are you in. Nothing but heavy cold rain of the worst variety where I am !

Also, conditions just up the road from me http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/8336502.stm

At last, proper SNOW!!
I didn't bother with sleet reports as it was depressing me, as well as reading that Ilminster, only about 10 miles East, has 2" already.
EDIT: and it's immediately pitching on very wet hard surfaces!
Whats this pitching business then - you playing baseball down there. Is this your way of saying that the snow is sticking ?

NS suggested earlier that the line is not the be all and end all when it comes to snow, the latest FAX has the low further south which would all help keep the milder air away for longer, or at least thats how I read it.
BBc News 24 latest forecast at 16:30 indicated heavy snow for vast majority of south. She did say some doubt at present but the forecast showed snow for Wales from a line east of Gower, Swansea

The whole winter this cold has had!
The whole of the past ten years!
There seems to be a malignant spite to this winter that can only ever come with recession!
If this run comes off, i will lose my job!
nothing more nothing less, so sit back and watch mother nature at her most savage!
She will have her way!
I do not want to put a dampener on this run, but one thing is for sure....it will happen!!!!!
God help us all!
errr.....

quote name='West is Best' post='1450145' date='1 Feb 2009, 08:39 PM']In the nicest possible way, let me just say that you need a new compass my friend. Either that or move it further away from the block of iron. The wind is easterly, with at most the occasional north-east component:

We hear a lot about Thames streamers, but I was thinking today that there's presumably no reason why one can't have a Bristol Channel Streamer. Well ... is this one just as I write? http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/sw/...test_radar.html
I doubt it as the wind is from a North West direction at present - comimh from inland areas.

I must admit that given the uncertainties for my area for this low from the SW I would prefer it to remain cold but dry rather than "average" and wet. Nothing worse than cold rain..... and seeing others further inland get an absolute dumping again. I saw this many times during the fabled 70's and 80's. Yes, we got lucky one or two times and had snow (which more often than not proceeded to melt by mid morning) whilst watching TV and that program that used to be broadcast from Birmingham that had glass panels so that you could see outside.... and guess what they were having a dumping whilst we were swimming. Frustrating but I guess its what you get for living on the coast with fantastic beaches all around (great during the summer) but does not satisfy my hunger for what my brother had in Hampshire last Tuesday..... over 1 ft of snow and still stuck in his village. Jelousy in old age is a strange thing !!
