  2. Hi Red. Hmmm. A CET of 15.5 has only happened 4 times since 1976, but we are sitting on a CET of +2.8C at 16.4C and historical records, on the 17th June count for nothing. With a cooler outbreak to come and a comparison to warmer conditions for the remaining 13 days of June ie the CET would fall, even if temperatures remained at an average of 16.4C for the rest of the month, there is a chance of the CET falling a fair way.

Evens. Straight bet. My virtual pint against yours!

    Paul

ok thats a bet. my average is 15.1 at the moment, but im not in the triangle so dont't count.

  3. what will you give me for a cet of 15.5? I would have gone higher but looks like the models indicating a cool incursion. Although i do like Mr Data's findings so am hoping for a hot hot june so we have a wintery winter.

  4. When it comes to GW, it never ceases to amaze me how the arguments put forward in favour of it seem often to be "observable" or "obvious", whereupon the counter arguments against the idea of GW become quite clinical and almost aggressive in their deep scientific reasoning. Whereupon the pro GW people offer that same style of argument in debunking said counter-arguments, and the anti-GW people either get all "observable" and "obvious" themselves, else they agree to disagree.

The end result always seems to be that both parties thing that they've won the debate or that a stalemate occurs.

"People watching" can be quite interesting sometimes :p

In all honesty though, I'd have to say that I would go with the general concesus of scientific opinion, which is not only that GW IS happening, but that on top of any natural cycles as causes, human beings are adding to the effect, which could potentially, at this rate, be enough to tip the scales.

    Just one point though...

Not at all. The "alarmists" would have it that GW could run away to a point, whereupon the planets negative feedback mechanisms could try so hard to snap it back as to plunge us into a new ice age, even if a "mini iceage" - that's not half as alarming now is it? Actually, as crudely as it's just been said, it could actually be considered quite a reasonable hypothesis, or maybe even a fully fledged theory.

I couldn't agree more especially with the new ice age theory. I have been thinking along such lines for several years. I have no evidence but i do think realignment with what the earth thinks is best will come with an abrupt and probably devastating effect.

    (apologies for large signature image!

  5. well if we're throwing degrees in -- i did an mphil in climate change (by research) while i was at liverpool school of architecture. the thesis set out on the premis that agw was a given and we needed to produce an architecture fit for the impending change. however, my tutor encouraged me to investigate how trustworthy that premis was. to cut a long story short my conclusion was: climate change is happening, whether that be a warming or an eventual cooling i'm not sure, but anthropogenic influence on the climate is almost certain. and my major concern is the belief that technology can save us. during the 70's when an impending ice age was assumed the US congress discussed funding for crushing the Rockies (the mountain range) into dust so that it could be burnt in ovens to release the CO2 to induce GW so that an iceage would be post-poned - thats a very scary use of technology.

I think we would all agree that we cannot arrogantly believe AGW can be resolved simply by inventing something or that we as a species have no detremental affect on the planet.

  6. Something strange is happening in our valley. we did have snow early this morning but its now melted and the temperature is 3.3C where everywhere else in the whole of the north of england is at or below freezing. take a look at this http://www.wunderground.com/stationmaps/gm...gic=1&wmo=03222 i'm the warm one!. the valley normally holds the cold but this time we sem to be in a heat sink! anyone care to explain. Its def not my station as all the snow has melted.
