  1. Cold, grey, no wind. Uuurgh... Could someone take the blanket off please?
  2. Nw forecast for about 1C by now; reality = 5.5C!
  3. Right, I'll do this. (No great rush though - the forecast isn't exactly rainy, is it?)
  4. Thanks for the advice everyone. It's in a suitable place, so that's not a problem. Yes, this one's an OS928 and records in 1mm increments. Not really sensitive enough. I'll have a look in the shops for something bigger - polycarbonate has a good finish... Optrex, is it Weather Display you use?
  5. I brought the device indoors yesterday and it quickly responded - RH down to about 55% within an hour. So it (probably) isn't faulty. All I can think is that it is pretty damp around here (close to the sea, sun very low, damp grass nearby), so maybe it really is right at 100% where it is, and a more representative reading would be made in free air up a tall pole - which probably how it's supposed to be done, not screwed to the garage wall at 2m agl!
  6. That's the nub of it: what to compare to... Currently 100% and has been since 22:00 last night apart from about 20 minutes this afternoon when it dropped to 97%.
  7. Here's another query... I've had an Oregon Scientific weather station running for about three weeks now. The outdoor temperature / humidity sensor is on a south-facing wall (temporarily, it'll be moved to a north-facing location very soon but it is currently shaded from direct sunlight all day) about 1.5m above the ground. About half the time it reports 98% relative humidity (RH). I've made the assumption that this should be 100% and have adjusted it in Weather Display accordingly. My query is this: does it seem realistic to have 100% RH so much of the time, or is it possible that I either have a faulty sensor or that the sensor's located inappropriately? I should add that the temperature measurements seem okay...
  8. My new weather station came with a rain gauge of about 10cm diameter. It records nothing in short showers. Would it be possible to put a large funnel on the top to increase its 'catchment'? Anyone done this?
  9. Thanks for all your advice... Now the wretched Husky's died though so the project's scuppered. It would have been quite a challenge though!
  10. Hi - thanks for your reply. Unfortunately in my case it's not a matter of how bothered I am, more a matter of not knowing how to re-write software - I used to be fluent in machine code at college but that's a loooong time ago... But if there's a good reference guide, maybe you could point me in the right direction The reason I'm wanting to do this is to avoid having a desktop / laptop on all the time. I have a Husky Fex21 that would do the job and could be left running at a fraction of the power.
  11. Does anyone know of a weather recording package (nothing fancy, just data logging) that will run on Windows CE that will interface with an Oregon Scientific weather station? Thanks.
  12. Round here there'd be little point sticking it on a pole in the garden cos there's so little wind. Maybe up the vicar's **s* would be more productive
  13. Icy day in the Highlands today. Started with eastern coastal fog at 0C, went west to find blue skies and similar temps on west coast, not rising above 1C all day. Returned east to temps below 0C after dusk. So first 'ice day' of the winter. Have to say though that although December has been chilly, it's not been unusually cold and there's been less snow on the hills than in previous years, even milder ones. Damn easterlies!
  14. someone in Germany is selling Oregon WMR 928 NX for a bit over £200 - does anyone think that's a particularly good or bad deal?
  15. Cracking lot of pictures/ My top 5 would be: Essan3, Kar9991, Frogesque7, Frogesque8 & Philglossop1. We're lucky to have such a dynamic weather system. Got freezing fog here for the 1st time for ages this morning - not sure the camera's coming out in this...
  16. Very cold and very windy here for the last 12 hours, with lots of heavy rain. Miserable weather, sucks all the warmth out of the house. Not sure how long the snow ill stay on the hills if this carries on... P
  17. Heavy snow showers, -1C gusty wind at 500m asl 10 miles south of Inverness at 11am. Snow settling down to about 250m asl.
  18. 8C now, starting to fall a bit, wind picking up too. Where's my DV pro?
  19. and hope the OON has gone to bed with a large mug of cocoa...
  20. Where should I post a request for info on weather stations, I guess 'user reviews wanted'? Thanks. Phil
  21. Overnight minimum 2 degrees, currently 4 degrees. Early rain showers now cleared. Very light winds. Feels like first day of winter!
  22. How about this from November last year? It was really spooky going up through a damp cloudy corrie with ravens cackling above - they were in the light! Phil
  23. Sunny here this morning, 4°C overnight min, now 7°C. Brief showers, optimistically described as feeling slightly sleety! Maybe more realistic this evening. (This is the Black Isle, 30m asl, a notoriously mild place for Scotland in winter!) Phil
  24. Are there any guidelines for image size / quality? Thanks. Phil
