  1. Well what another amazing day this turned out to be. We overnighted in Amarillo and upon waking up had seen a slight risk introduced in central texas. We decided to head back down and had lunch in Childress. Noticed some tops going up near Graham, TX so made our way down. Very robust turkey towers played for about an hour, just enough time for us to get there when 2 cells went up. Both displayed LP characteristics with both rotating on visual and data. These cells literally did not more for about an hour and then eventually the southern cell ate the rest up and decided to put on a show!At this point she decided to move south through Graham, TX as it appears it latched on to some kind of boundary. We drove through the core to get down the eastern edge and got a great view from the south east with the sun behind the storm. She teased with a stunning cone funnel that we're pretty sure touched the ground, reports seem to confirm this too. After about 10 minutes up it went only to then drop another thin cone that fully condensed to the ground near Eliasville and then gave an amazing rope out with the sun lighting it up! I have some great video of the tornado splitting in the middle and losing the condensation. As it started to get dark it really lost it's low level winds and the lid finally closed. Now on our way north to kill some miles ready for tomorrows chase in Kansas. Had to core punch again and took some mean hard hailstones! :D Here's some pics and video will be up a bit later or maybe in the morning depending on the time we finish driving.

  2. After last nights events everyone is still on a high! There is a risk in far NE Texas and then in to Arkansas but the terrain is awful there and an early initiation means we're not going to go for it. Instead we're going to head to Amarillo for our celebratory steak but first we're going to visit the town of Grandbury which was hit hard last night by what looks to be an EF4 tornado. We'll stream as we enter the town hopefully :)

  3. Wow! What a day this was. It caught virtually every chaser out but delivered the goods in the end! Started out in Wichita Falls with an initial target of Haskell, TX. A couple of weak storms were struggling to keep going, possibly due to a dry air slot we'd noticed on the early morning soundings. After a very frustrating few hours we noticed a line of storms fire from east of Wichita Falls all the way down to roughly Brownwood. Hauled it east 70 odd miles and caught the middle cell as it was just going through Mineral Wells. Slid down the western side of it and then went east to be presented with a lovely cone tornado that put on a show for us for a few minutes near Millsap! :D

After the cone dissipated, further down the road we had another brief touchdown. Tracked the storm south east where it started to merge with the southern cell. We then witnessed our third tornado whilst trying to get south but got cut off by the awful road network. We had to scoot north and then back south and then this is when it went on it's rampage through Granbury with 6 fatalities, 16 missing and 100's injured :( It then went on to plough through Cleburne and then on to the DFW area.

All in all a great chase in the end but very sobering to hear of the loss of life :( Why can't these things just happen over open land?

A few picks from me including a tree that got struck by lightning and stripped it's bark! I have some video that I'll try and get uploaded too.

  4. After a very cool evening spent with a Kansan family on their farm we're heading back south to get in to position for some chase action tomorrow in Texas. There's a couple of areas we're interested in so going to stay in the middle in Wichita Falls (again!) :D

  5. Nothing but blue skies today so we're heading north from our overnight stay in Woodward, OK to see some friends in McPherson, KS. Going to stop in Greensburg for lunch and to see how the town is getting on another year after the event.

This morning we completed the Wal-Mart challenge! This involved purchasing an item (or several associated items) costing no more than $5 ex tax, not orange or green, no wheels unless REALLY cool and that couldn't be consumed (unless sealed such as a pharmaceutical item) all within a 20 minute time limit :D (yes this challenge was born the night before sat in the sun with a wee drink)

There were quite a few amusing items bought; hopefully we'll get some pictures up later of all the purchases :D
