  1. Hi Gareth,

Was it you who had a long drive this week? if it was how did it go? If it wasn't, just ignore me

Yep! Drove down last night, clear all the way till Swanley, Kent around 1015pm, it then started snowing, more heavily and got an inch in an hour, that was it for here.

I then drove to Guildford this morning, they have 3-4 inches, 5 miles down the road they had 10 inches!

Pleased to say the gritters have done an excellent job of all the roads down here, they were well prepared. Back up to Norfolk tomorrow!

  2. Is confidence strong for EA overnight and Tomorrow or will we miss out? I live in North Norfolk. My local radio station say a few showers with the occasional one heavy. Thought I would get the real deal from you guys. :girl_devil:

Good luck, i've asked more than a few times, but because the action is further down south Norfolk has been ignored despite it being in East Anglia.

  3. I am a novice weather watcher and quite frankly I am utterly disappointed by the pathetically small amount of snow we have had in Norwich (again!). I generally watch the BBC and I thought I would post on here to ask why they keep getting it wrong for Norfolk?

It seem to happen time and time again that Norfolk get forecast snow only for it to be delayed, eventually for it never to actually happen!

Please could someone tell me if we are actually going to get some decent snow ( more than 0.5cm!!) My parents live in Yorkshire and they have had oodles and so I am very peeved!

Your in hope of an explanation

I'm with you. I have asked a few times about this. Norfolk has been the only part of the country that has missed this event, and for the foreseeable future, looks like it will remain virtually snow free, from every angle be it east, north south or west, it misses us. Annoying i know.

  4. we have 2-3cm of fresh snow here in stanhoe, north norfolk. hoping to get a little more (very likely at some point this week)

We have a shallow duck pond in the village and the ducks normally keep a small area clear of ice by swimming in circles all day/night (not a joke LOL), its so cold that it has completely frozen over and the ducks are without water. Looks like i will have to go with the spade to clear some ice tommorow for them.

the phenomenal thing is the temps we are getting, met/bbc progged -2c for my area at 18z today, current temp is -6.2c! (2 metres above ground)

cant imagine what the minimums could get to over the weekend/next week, if the north easterly verifies then we will get some severe cold in the region. I have family in southern norway and they are even moaning about the cold this year, and that same air will be flooding toward us.

just a random question, does anybody know whether we have additives in diesel fuel to stop it from freezing/going sludgy like they do on the continent?? could become a problem with the continuing cold spell if we dont!

    michael

They add anti waxing agents in diesel from abour Oct/Nov onwards, so i wouldnt worry. It would have to be well below minus -10 to consider cutting it with anything, petrol being the best but this will vary from car to car.

  5. To be honest I'd rather keep the clear skies here, as you said earlier get those temps as low as possible, esp being close to the estuary we tend to need to get as cold as possible.

I have to admit my journey back from Guildford to Essex on the 9th could be very very interesting...

I can beat that, i have Norfolk to Guildford on Tues night, then back again Thursday night :D

  6. We travelled down from Norwich to Swanley earlier, i had no idea we would be hitting heavy snow on the way.

At first it just reduced visibility but then it started to settle and traffic was down to about 20mph in places. We witnessed one crash where a car had spun and hit the barrier.

We had a heads up, that the Asda car park in Swanley has cars stuck in there for hours, and the main London Road was gridlocked.

We approached through some minor roads, generally ok to pass, but then we came to Hextable and saw the slush that had frozen to thick ice about an inch in places. Twice i nearly hit the kerb as the van slide sideways and i was only going about 2 mph!

I have never seen roads freeze like that, i've only been driving 11 years but i have driven in snow and ice before, this was something else.

My guess is that the ground is still below freezing, despite a thaw taking place this is then freezing again on the ground. The rain then snow on top of the ice has created a lethal combination, i would urge anyway who is thinking of going out in this area to NOT bother.

My main concern is of reports there will be more snow for the south east/London overnight. Is this true? If the temperatures stay below freezing i may just stay at home.
