  1. It has to be said - the embedded cold air we've had up here for god knows how long as won the battle over the milder air trying to filter in from the south. To keep it at 3c is good going, and now I think the milder air has been given a clip round the ear for interefering with our cold airmass. Pfft - should be ashamed of itself :D

    Totally agree, :D

Funny thing here, while I was working I thought I heard rain/soft hail.. but have just stuck me head oot the windae to see the snow on roof is now frozen again and that lovely corona around the moon y'all mentioned last night :)

New fax charts look promising for us all on Saturday

    http://www.meteociel.../fax/fax60s.gif

    Great Charts!!

Anyone got any thoughts on that feature currently just E/NE of Shetland? Looks like it's head this way.

    http://www.sat24.com/gb

Think that's what's been throwing off the couple of bands we've already received today. I remember one year (might've been 2000 now that I've read CMD's post) where in a N/NE'erly something oop there just kept throwing off what looked like teeny cotton wool looking showers but actually landed up leaving about 40cm (Lady P's avatar year?) over the course of a couple days

About 5 minutes ago a I heard a really squally wind develop after less than hardly any wind this afternoon accompanied by very heavy hail which is still falling and coming down the chimney, currently 0c, quite extraordinary weather.

Agree quite weird, good job Santa's finished with the chimney :D

  2. I'm glad to see lots of blues on the models for the foreseeable future. I'm also happy to say we'll be having lots more blue clothes for BoyCatch#3!!!

Congrats Daddy & Mummy Catch! :nonono: - PS: if you do need any newborn stuff, give me shout I'm about to pop mine on eBay! Nice blue knitted cardi sitting here on top of the pile :good:

  3. The MetO have released a weather warning for Heavy snow etc

That's maybe the biggest worry, we've done OK so far with them ignoring us :smiliz46:

j/k.. temps now falling away nicely, let's see what the clouds bring!

Ah there it is again.........what exactly is a "shortwave event", and whats required for it??

    cc_confused.gif

I think and others do cmiiw please, it's that kink in the pressure lines that's been coming down the coast of Norway? and I presume there is a bit of extra weather associated with it.. at least that's my laymans interpretation

  4. Yes, I think the regional threads have been a great success

They were very popular last year, so we thought we'd re-introduce them. I believe that it's good to have a whole range of different threads so that all of the members feel they are able to contribute in some way.

I resemble that remark - and wholeheartedly agree :whistling: from yes another one who has signed in more since it went regional

btw, apparently all over t'internet ladies are the doers and gents are the talkers, it's apparently the same offline :good:

anyway I love all posts, am usually quite quiet but read and appreciate a lot (as well as filter quite a bit )

  5. I think that in general that all the models are trending towards an even colder spell of weather. In terms of the 06z GFS this morning I'd say it looks not quite as cold but with more snow around especially for Scotland.

Its basically an option that could more easily go wrong with more areas especially down south seeing rain or sleet instead of snow. Thus there will be loads of debate and arguing on the model thread this morning as some dont like what they see.

Personally I dont really take too much notice of the 06z or the 18z GFS as I find them a bit erratic in their output and usually rely more on the 0z and the 12z GFS, ECM and the Meto faxes all of which, at the moment, are pointing to a cold spell and maybe even much colder weather after New Year than we've had so far this winter. In terms of how much snow we'll get and where, its probably too early to say just yet.

I like the GFS ensembles 850 temperature ensembles for my area with the mean gradually dropping over the last 3-4 days.

ditto re your views on the runs, 0 and 12 here too and your ensembles as same as here, and WOW! the mean not getting above -5 until about the 13th Jan :whistling:

Have had about 3-4cm of hail/snow overnight too, temp currently 2.7C DP 0 - down from a high of 3C earlier.

The models look incredible, what can I say that hasn't already be said - Happy Weather Watching :good:

  6. It may be getting warmer up there, however Glasgow Airport is down to -8C at 8.50pm. The second equal coldest temp recorded since January 2003, according to a quick flick through the archives on WeatherOnline. Granted it is second equal with several other -8C values ;)

And what is the coldest (I hear you ask) since January 2003?? Wednesday the 23rd December 2009.

I'm glad I asked ;) - see these 2009 stats are fading in the memories already hehehe

even "warmer" here now @ -1.3C

  7. True northerly airflow soon to meet edge of westerly cloud movement:

    http://www.sat24.com/

Ah ha! Mondy is that perhaps what the weather warnings are for? - would explain the confusion over that band that is fizzling out just now, the chart I posted earlier seemed to suggest that the N/NE snow wasn't happening until around midnight.. this would of course make Northerlights the luckiest person (or unlucky depending on your preference) ;) he could be about to be hit twice?

this "band" has showed some very mild flurries on the Huntly webcam, but I've been working for the last few hours and not noticed what's happening outside.. trots off for a look

has "warmed up here too -4.4C @5:30 to -2.2C now.. DP -3

  8. Well I think that's the probem - as Shuggee says, the SST's are around 7° and the wind doesn't have a cold origin.

The good news however, is that the wind then begins to back more north-easterly from a more Polar origin so the thaw should only be temporay before we see more flurries in time for Hognamay.

So we would need upper of around -8 / -9 in Aberdeen since we are not so conducive to snowfall from the east as Edinburgh is.

Zero, I think the source is (or might be +48) polar/cold? and from what I can make out the uppers should be about -7 to -8

anyway this chart paints a slightly different picture to what that forecast said - thoughts?

  9. Are we really entering an "astounding" and "incredible" spell of weather?

    Quote: http://forum.netweat...ost__p__1677049

Is this excitement merited, guys? Haven't we had some "astounding" and "incredible" wx already or is there so much more to come? I take everything with a pinch of grit on the model threads, but when you see this and other quotes, you begin to wonder if it's gonna be historical weather in years to come????

hmm I had to unblock that one to read it :p think that says it all, mods going to busy again tonight keeping the "southern" euphoria out of the model thread.

We are already well and truly into this weather spell, and yes I think it's going to mentioned for years to come, but for lots of different reasons (another ice day here!). I do however think that particular type of euphoria in that quoted post might just be counting their chickens too early as some of the more sensible forecasters have tried to point out today.

    Source My Bold

For our (BBC) part, we've elected (rightly, I think most would agree) to highlight the snow potential for these marginal arreas rather than downplay it, because history amply demonstrates to us how the backlash of forecasting rain but not correctly forecasting disruptive snow is massive and potentially deadly; conversely, forecasting rain that never becomes promised snow largely bothers / upsets schoolkids, skiers and varied snow aficianados, but is otherwise speedily forgotten (and often a major relief for travellers).

Still baffled by the lack of significance given to the snow potential tomorrow night onwards for here - where is the major snow potential in this chart - Central Scotland or the M4 corridor? post-9298-12620174327113_thumb.png

Just another case of the highly populated, newsworthy area V's the other??

  10. My brother just told me that he watched the BBC forecast and they are predicting snow showers for NE Scotland tonight, i havent been able to verify this anywhere, am i missing something?

Presumably from that comma feature that has been sitting above us all day, The NAE (what the BBC use?) have been keen to show it changing direction a little and moving back down over the NE around midnight: see this during the last 2 runs

  11. PS: at Panto in Aberdeen yesterday, we walked 3 children up the middle of the road to avoid the iciest parts!

The solution as I said earlier is this:

Where can I get mine???!!! :cold:

Hehe, great idea! When mine was that wee, I just bundled him up in snowsuit and lots of cosy quilts and put him in the sledge to walk up and down to the village

  12. I see there is a NW alert gone out which covers among other things Icy roads. But, they omitted us for icy roads. I'm happy to take a few snaps of real icy roads though if they want to update their alert! :cold:

LOL! me too, OH has just decided to walk to the village as he can't be bothered sanding and gritting yet again!

  13. It just seems to be going more SE rather than S though and its progress it painfully slow.

If this is the case only places like Peterhead and Cruden Bay will catch the snow. May not even fall as snow on the Moray coast - it's amazing how mild placeslike Rosehearty remain in cold weather - it must be a nightmare for snow lovers there!

Yea very touch and go further S and inland, Aberdeen might just catch a bit, Agreed the Rosehearty temps always seem way out of kilter with the rest though one of our staff comes from up there, just west a little and they have a lot of snowy days recently, so it must be very marginal just on that far tip!

  14. Just been looking at that. The ppn has shifted from north to south to west to east  Seems to be dumping in the North Sea http://www.raintoday.co.uk/ so that -20c is on the cards. After 4pm today, be interesting to see how the temps fall. I think most of us won't get above 0c today

the West->East movement seems to have stalled a little Mondy? it was clearly going that way earlier, which is why I though it might just shiff over the far North but the Sat pic appears to be showing a slight halt.. I still don't think it'll get too far south though - what do you think?

  15. Well somewhere should be cold and snowy during the next week or so, LOL! - looks like our wee corner might miss out again from both sides. With that central belt "corridor", looking favoured yet again, you lucky lot

That comma feature looks like it'll not travel too far south and seems to just skiffing the most N/NE'erly points before heading ESE

I could of course be completely wrong! forecasting is not my thing..

In reply to an earlier poster who said ".. surely Scotland has had enough snow by now.." NOT ALL areas of Scotland have had the same coverage, some only got the same as what you got in some regions further south of the border. Only difference is that the cold has kept whatever cover, generally intact for the most part the last 10+ days

PS: Take a look at some of the glorious pics on the more North/NorthEast Traffic Cams this morning, lots bathed in lovely orange sunshine showing the cover at it's loveliest

  16. Well, rain hit the ground and froze - and I landed a**e first on the doorstep while taking a bin out to empty - *sore*. This frozen rain has been a killer this last week. Plus I have my parents coming to stay today and the heating has gone kaput!

Just a typical day in Aberdeen this winter...

Small bergs are floating down the Dee on the way out to sea today. Been a while since I've seen that.

Oh, for the peron who mantioned the state of the pavements in Aberdeen - no they've not been cleared once since the first fall. They think chucking a bit of salt (if you're lucky) on them is good enough. It's all just compacted ice now after the freeze/thaw of the pre-xmas days followed by 2 days of solid freeze.

    Ouch!

heard a rumour that Aberdeenshire roads/pavements are clearer than Aberdeens because Aberdeen've run out of salt/grit, weren't holding big enogh stores being as how it's not "normally" required at the coast, having drive through to and from Johnshaven I can confirm the are fairly awful in comparison to ours :(

Ice in the Dee eh, nice, you'll have lots of sightseers stopping on the Bridge today then

WE've now a couple of showers of cold/sleety rain, temp about 2C now 12 miles up the road in Alford they're reporting more snow/sleet than rain/sleet

anyhow off to the Panto today, 12 of us and only 4 kids in amongst that - (well kids under 4ft that is )

    Have Fun ya'll!

  17. WOW you guys in the central area have had mega fun overnight  Hope it stays as snow or at least light snizzle so it doesn't thaw too much!

It was Xmas eve when this happened up here and on Christmas day we spent three hours clearing the road of 5mm thick black ice so we could get out for dinner - never seen the likes of the freezing rain in my life and hubby said he hadn't seen it like this (and he's lived here for 40+ years!)

anyhoo got there and home yesterday, safe and sound. Although Aberdeen showed -9 our low only got to -6.5 (is this because we're higher?) - now it's 0 DP -1 - with nothing much looking likely to hit soon.. still have the 4-5 inches cover due to the extreme cold, and possibly more weird which I hadn't realise snow is actually still on rooves showing no slip at all

Very Pretty White Christmas, although I'm not even sure we got a technical WC here?

more fun lines up for the next few days? or have you lot in the central belt got greedy :whistling:

  18. I got stuck in the snow on the way home the other night and had to sleep in the car. It was no fun, let me tell you - I was hungry, lonely and freezing. I barely slept a wink.

In the morning the snow had melted a bit and I was able to continue on my way. Having had such a sh*t night, I decided to go round to my girlfriend's house. When I got there I parked outside, looked up and saw her at her bedroom window. She looked so happy to see me. Suddenly I was overcome with emotion because I was so pleased to see her too. We've been together for three years so far and had some wonderful times. I know it may sound soppy and over-the-top but, at that moment in time, there was no-one else on Earth that I wanted to be with. She was the one.

I got out of the car and made my way towards her front door. The front lawn was a blanket of untouched snow and, with my girlfriend still watching me, an idea crossed my mind. Giddy with emotion, I stepped onto the lawn, got down on one knee and began to carve a message in the snow, letter by letter...

    HANNAH, WILL YOU MA...

I looked up and could see her starting to breathe heavily, trying to smile as her eyes welled up with tears...

...KE ME A CUP OF TEA AND A SANDWICH?

That was 4 days ago, and the caravan still isn't speaking to me.

    LMAO :acute:

  19. now stopped :help:

Lets hope my mother can get home then, one day with her is good, over-night and were talking banging head off wall!wallbash.gif

got to page 6 of 11, saw this and laughed out loud!

My sister and I have been on the phone more than once this week, We're supposed to be going to sis's tomorrow. However the conversation always turned to mother and how she was going to get there/home.. we took her last year and had to leave early because of her, we managed to get her to bed at about 2 last year! This year we only have a small car and were not even sure we could get there ourselves (the no unnecessary travel bit!) but one thing we had decided that if it was at all borderline we couldn't go get her - which ultimately meant we couldn't go either.. no win situation - it's nae easy at times is it :help:

anyhoo back to today it was a bit hairy this am, our temps are remaining borderline, and these showers are still falling as rain/snizzle/sleet/snow, so no loss/ no gain despite hitting a max of 2C today. Thankfully it 'warmed' enough that we didn't have to sledge the shopping back up the hill this am, and hopefully it'll be enough to travel safely through the next 2 days. Then it can snow it's heart out :)

    Mondy that caption/pic is priceless

See we've got new warnings? = covering ones "donkey" springs to mind

Yes I think We don;t need to split up here in community but the warnings, Meto or Weather Community need to realise the vast differences we can have up here

but all in all a Very Merry Christmas to you all! and here's to a interesting weather watching Year!
