  1. very true Northern Rab, however we tend to know the signs a bit better and can prepare t shorter notice (old habits die hard!).

I think that's why even the METO can't get the warnings right for Scotland until the last minute, as it really is a country with regions that have very different micro climates because of the precise wind direction and different lots of Hills can make or break .. who knows.. like you Mondy, I don't like that Scotland is lumped because very rarely, if ever, will the E/W or N/S have the same conditions

it does make our hobby more intersting at times though, don't you think :whistling:

  2. GG would you not be due to do well out of Sunday if there's a more Westerly flow?

I was just kidding earlier btw, yes they frequently do not get the warnings right for up here so I rarely pay attention to them especially this far out - and besides I'm in a Que Sera Sera mood :) - liking the lighter mood in here the few days too!

  3. YBY, looks like we're not getting anything , no warnings, nothing for Saturday on MO for NE, Oh Well :p

    .

    .

    .

btw, j/k - patience is a virtue so they say

yes had a hit of sleet inland here this afternoon too, temp now 4 too, been loads of squally showers most of the day and the hilltops showing signs of whiteness

  4. finally dipped below freezing here, currently -0.1c : dp -1

think I'm a little too far NE for major competition tonite, Rosehearty on the far NE Coast is till showing +6c

another Scottish site with sortable columns shows the SW is coldest so far (aside from the Highlands frost hollow which is, Loch Glascarnoch) with temps around -4 to -6. Assuming this is going over the borders too as Shap showing fairly cold -3/-4 too

  5. still going, now heavy thick flakes here, hasn't stopped since 7:30am - gotta go get weeyun from school as it's closing.

re: Dufftown JCB's etc.. been a long time since I saw that happening :) - That's a lot you had up there in Moray in a short space of time..

just waiting for the rain now :)

  6. Nice post Shuggee, and I agree there's no telling until it happens

local forecast here is for rain/sleet/snow (which for here is a pretty safe bet as always :D !)

we had a few snow showers earlier this evening and I'm watching closely what Coastie is reporting as that is usually indicative of what we can expect especially if thon win' goes a bit more northerly..

I've seen the South of the Uk have a high pressure mild westerly with the northerly stream in full flow up here but only affecting the extreme North (aka, the isles!), but with a tiny bit of an easterly influence can make a huge difference to us here.. and more so you, I think!

  7. you're welcome, White Xmas, at least we have some other heating sources and will worry about paying for it later :)

Andy nobody wants an argument, but with your seasoned knowledge there's no need to come in here saying how you had it worse. You maybe had it different.. but so do we (or most of us, just like you) - we weren't jealous and some still have the lying/falling snow to prove it. However it's not a competition as far as I know?

I think we can all agree that we're on this forum (Netweather, not the Scotland thread!) because we have an interest in the weather.. normally we Scots wouldn't even get a chance to discuss these little "anomalies" that occur up here, so it's interesting that we are finally getting a space in between the greater noise to "chat", for instance I would never dream of mention 'curly' things in other threads.. but I do READ them.

LadyP is right, there was a cracking sat pic that indeed showed 3 of those "Curly" things in a row, in fact it was one of them that gave us (NE) our snow last thurs/friday, however the fact you didn't notice is either indicative or normal :) - it would not, even in a "normal" winter, have been of interest to the majority because it would have been dismissed as "normal for them".. when in fact it isn't

This winter is different all around I think!

carry on.. hope this doesn't cross the border RossB.. if so I alopogise ..

  8. as has been pointed out in previous replies, it probably isn't/wasn't a polar low, however it is/was a very interesting feature because it disbanded and reformed a couple times (in the same place just of the NW coast). Apparently it's just a low pressure passing through, and as Coastie noticed its interesting because whenever the curly/swirly thing has formed then disbanded it has thrown off troughs (?right word?) which have provided a few bands of weather as is being reported from the north downwards

follow it here during the last 24 hours

  9. it certainly is skirting us I think, I'm about 18 miles east of Huntly and 18 miles west of Aberdeen city - we've about a cm now, NW features always seem to miss the sheltered east Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen itself.

However I measured today and we've still 6.5 inches of level snow so a cm or 2 top up will do quite nicely :D

Don't think Glasgow will see this one, but the one following behind is supposed to track more to the west coast isn't it?

PS: White Xmas, thanks for your input in this thread I enjoy readin your posts

PPS: LadyP, where'd you lose it (I've done that myself a time or 2 ;) ) hard not to lose patience at times

PPPS my c.heating is still frozen :D

  10. Just saw that warning too, tbh I wasn't expecting it this far east..

Just a report to say that temp dropped from +5.8 to 0.0 in 2.5 hours between 2pm and 4.30pm

don't have a barometer to see the pressure drop, and that band that's on the radar is further East that I thought it was going to be

Ah.. have just seen a few light flakes and Huntly cam shows the snow is there or there abouts, it's hard to tell in the half light but it matches what I see to the west out my window..

believe Portsoy has seen an inch or so already, apparently it's falling very thickly and blowing

the worst may still not reach here but it's close

  11. woke up to another whiteout, maybe another 2-3 inches, don't know when it happenened, but I think it must've been that heavy band now over the SW/Lothian.

Is threatening to turn to rain, but it's now snowing again, blowy squally shower. I think it'll be intermittent rain/snow looking at those showers coming down, temp 0.6º - it's very windy too making it blizzard like and treacherous for driving I imagine, thankfully not got to go out today

  12. Well if the Meto need to see that it's actually snowing (and has been for a couple hours leaving another couple inches) before they put out the warning then I think that pretty much sums up the nowcasting nature of all of these events.

I think the charts & forecasts are a bit useless just now too, nobody's fault, just don't hink anyone really knows for sure when/where because of the unusual combination of events?

Name me one place up here which has suffered school closures and travel problems today?

    http://www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/adverse/list.asp

and more schools just closing now.. oh we're on there now too .. need to go get him

  13. the tail of that polar/lee low thingy off the far NE coast does have a little left in it

it's snowing heavily again, no warnings on meto, nor can I find it on any forecast.. on top of yesterdays which froze and is looking beautiful still hanging on the trees etc, this is a bit unexpected but - yippee!!

PS: am in favour of keeping a Scotttish thread pinned too, all too often our wee bits of news get lost in "favoured area" type comments
