hi graupel, yes its a shame slow watch died a death. i have stopped go on pretty much completely. farkin still spouts antagonishing tosh over there but there hardly anyone to listen to him. god forbid he tries getting on NW. he would be roasted. anyway, am off to cornwall tomorrow. have a good evening. cheers LS

  2. We had lying snow in Liverpool in late Feb 94.

I had just passed my driving test and got a car... but was having trouble driving in the snow!

The snow in Feb 96 was heavier though.

  3. I remember Dec 1981/Jan 1982 vividly even though I was only 10 yrs old.

The feature of the cold spell that I remember wasn't just the snowfall but the very low temps. Dec 14th 1981 the Max never reached any higher than around -14C in some area of England aswell as Scotland and the following Min temp dropped to -26C in Shawbury Shropshire!

I remember going outside in the freezing fog and my hair used to turn white

I recorded -23.2C in my back garden in oxfordshire. it was the best weather i can remember. my village became an alpine wonderland. i was only a kid but nothing has surpassed it since

  4. Is it the "majority of newsworthy events occur there" or "the majority of newsreaders/journalists live there".

Nothing like a blinkered soft southerner to say it like he wishes it is!!!

If you and your south-eastern friends are so important you should have the UK's nuclear arsenal stored beside you, you should have the oil rigs in your region, you should have all the cows/sheep/crops where all your food is produced or the ports where all your cheap imports are offloaded from in your region.

The wealth of London which you allude to would not have been possible without the coal mines of the north during the last 150 years, ot the shipbuilding capabilities of "Northern" areas like Clydeside or Tyneside.

The "majority" of news worthy events do not occur in London or the surrounding area. News is proportional to the effect it has on one particular area, combined with the proximity of those who decide to report it. In that respect it is so obvious that London news gets over reported, obvious to anyone who isn't so introverted that (to quote Jade Goody) they think that "East Angular is abroad".

i work for the media, and in london, and believe you me it is so depressing how the "if it doesnt happen on my back door, it hasnt happend" mentality prevails. the classic for me was jan 28 2004 when london had a freakish thundersnowstorm at 5ish pm. this represents deadline for many national papers, and it created mayhem on many newsdesks. v amusing

  5. Interesting you mention that Shuggs... If you look at my post in the Autumn thread you MAY not have much longer to wait to see those artic winds digging in bring Cold snowy weather...

  6. Those '68 charts, with 1045mbs over to the North and West illustrate the achilles heal of the even larger teapot - how not having a stable, strong Greenland High leaves us with little more than SW'ly and W'ly zonality.

Anyone remember those pesky little 'Channel Lows' or an equivalent say across the Midlands - introducing an artic or E'ly blast behind as they move off into the Low Countries?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    i remember them well shugs

  7. At one stage around mid-day a small amount of blue sky appeared but it was a false dawn and it has now been raining non-stop since 7 am,temperature 12.1c,humidity 98%,wind  moderate Northerly, barometer 1007 mb and rising slowly--oh the joys of living near the east coast!
